Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is generally considered a primary tumorigenic agent. While UVR exposure has been studied, especially at the skin level, the impact of UV exposure on internal tissues and ...its effect on the appearance and the development of tumors has not yet been fully examined. Although there are maximum limits for UVR exposure on external tissues, other internal tissues, such as oral tissue, can be exposed to UVR as well. Over the course of diagnosis and treatment, oral cells may be exposed to ultraviolet radiation; however, there has not been an established limit for UV radiation exposure. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to examine the effects of ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation at two doses (2.5 and 5 J/cm2) on tumor cells (pharyngeal carcinoma and tongue carcinoma) and healthy cells (gingival fibroblasts). The viability of the cells and their morphology, actin filaments, and nuclei structures; the expression of anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2) and pro-apoptotic (Bax) genes; and the roles of caspases-3/7, 8, and 9 were determined after the cells had been exposed to UVB. The experiments revealed that both types of cell lines showed reductions in viability, especially at a dose of 5 J/cm2. Additionally, apoptotic-like changes (rounding of the cells, the condensation of the nuclei, the re-organization of the actin filaments) were observed in all analyzed cells. The expression of anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2) and pro-apoptotic (Bax) genes revealed that UVB (5 J/cm2) may induce apoptosis in both oral tumor and healthy cells. Moreover, an analysis of caspases-3/7, 8, and 9 showed that UVB exposure enhanced their activity, suggesting that cell death could be caused by both intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis. Accordingly, UVB exposure at the maximum doses used in dental practices (5 J/cm2) induced nonselective apoptotic changes, thereby reducing both tumor and healthy cell viability.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has attracted attention in dermatology applications for skin disease characterization and diagnosis because it provides high-resolution (<10 μm) of tissue ...non-invasively with high imaging speed (2–8 s). However, the quality of OCT images can be significantly degraded by speckle noise, which results from light waves scattering in multiple directions. This noise can hinder the accuracy of disease diagnosis, and the conventional frame averaging method requires multiple repeated (e.g., four to six) scans, which is time consuming and introduces motion artifacts. To overcome these limitations, we proposed a lightweight U-shape Swin (LUSwin) transformer-based denoising pipeline to recover high-quality OCT images from the noisy OCT images by utilizing a fast one-repeated OCT scan. In terms of the peak signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR) performance, the results reveal that the denoised images from the LUSwin transformer (26.92) are of a higher quality than the four-repeated frame-averaging method (26.19). Compared to the state-of-the-art networks in image denoising, the proposed LUSwin transformer has the smallest floating points operation (3.9299 G) and has the second highest PSNR results, only 0.02 lower than the Swin-UNet, which has the highest PSNR results (26.94). This study demonstrates that the transformer model has the capacity to denoise the noisy OCT image from a fast one-repeated OCT scan.
We present a real-time realization of OCT-based elastographic mapping local strains and distribution of the Young’s modulus in biological tissues, which is in high demand for biomedical usage. The ...described variant exploits the principle of Compression Optical Coherence Elastography (C-OCE) and uses processing of phase-sensitive OCT signals. The strain is estimated by finding local axial gradients of interframe phase variations. Instead of the popular least-squares method for finding these gradients, we use the vector approach, one of its advantages being increased computational efficiency. Here, we present a modified, especially fast variant of this approach. In contrast to conventional correlation-based methods and previously used phase-resolved methods, the described method does not use any search operations or local calculations over a sliding window. Rather, it obtains local strain maps (and then elasticity maps) using several transformations represented as matrix operations applied to entire complex-valued OCT scans. We first elucidate the difference of the proposed method from the previously used correlational and phase-resolved methods and then describe the proposed method realization in a medical OCT device, in which for real-time processing, a “typical” central processor (e.g., Intel Core i7-8850H) is sufficient. Representative examples of on-flight obtained elastographic images are given. These results open prospects for broad use of affordable OCT devices for high-resolution elastographic vitalization in numerous biomedical applications, including the use in clinic.

Progress has been made not only in the physical methods of carrying out measurements, but significant advances have also been achieved in the development of mathematical processing of the received signals. This review is devoted to the comparison of modern methods and devices used to control the quality of milk and feed for farm animals.
The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is among the most important agricultural pests in the world and one of the world’s top 10 most invasive insect pests. Bemisia tabaci is associated with severe yield and ...quality losses, mainly due to the transmission of plant viruses, as in the case of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Reducing insecticide applications is a research priority, e.g., developing innovative and clean tools such as electromagnetic waves. The present work aims to determine the effective parameters of laser to reduce the Bemisia tabaci population in common beans. Preliminary assays were conducted by manually irradiating continuous-wave laser beams with different wavelengths (444 nm, 527 nm, and 640 nm) and optical intensities directly on the insects. Among these, the most effective wavelength was 444 nm. Later, we repeated the experiments using a homemade automated system to control the exposure time (t1 = 1 s, t2 = 2 s, t3 = 3 s and t4 = 4 s) of whiteflies to the incident beam at different optical intensities (I1 ≈ 10 Wcm−2, I2 ≈ 4 Wcm−2, I3 ≈ 2 Wcm−2). We have achieved 100% insect mortality by irradiating 454 nm laser wavelength on the 3rd instar nymphs of Bemisia tabaci, with the following parameters: I1(t1), I2(t3) and I3(t4). Moreover, the laser irradiation test did not affect plant yield and development, revealing that our preliminary results present a photonic technique that could control whiteflies without harming the plants’ development.
Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) relative humidity (RH) sensors are fabricated in commercially available polyimide (PI)-coated optical fibers with diameters of 50 and 125 μm. Infrared (800 nm) femtosecond ...pulse duration laser pulses and a phase mask are used to inscribe Type-I and Type-II FBGs directly through the protective polyimide coatings of both 50 and 125 μm diameter fibers without typical fiber processing such as hydrogen loading, cryogenic storage, stripping, recoating or annealing. The devices are then evaluated for their performance as humidity sensors. At telecom wavelengths, the 50 μm diameter fiber devices with a 10 μm thick PI coating had a wavelength shift of the Bragg resonance at a constant temperature of 2.7 pm/%RH, whereas the 125 μm diameter fiber devices with a 17 μm thick PI coating had a wavelength shift of 1.8 pm/%RH. The humidity sensors in the 50 µm diameter fiber demonstrated a more rapid response time to small changes in humidity and a weaker hysteresis when compared to the 125 µm diameter fiber devices. No modification to the PI coatings was observed during fabrication. No difference in RH sensitivity was observed for Type-I devices when compared with Type-II devices with the same fiber. The applicability of this approach for fabricating distributed RH sensing arrays with hundreds of sensing elements on a single fiber is discussed.
Vortex beams carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), and their inherent infinite dimensional eigenstates can enhance the ability for optical communication and information processing in the classical ...and quantum fields. The measurement of the OAM of vortex beams is of great significance for optical communication applications based on vortex beams. Most of the existing measurement methods require the beam to have a regular spiral wavefront. Nevertheless, the wavefront of the light will be distorted when a vortex beam propagates through a random medium, hindering the accurate recognition of OAM by traditional methods. Deep learning offers a solution to identify the OAM of the vortex beam from a speckle field. However, the method based on deep learning usually requires a lot of data, while it is difficult to attain a large amount of data in some practical applications. To solve this problem, we design a framework based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and multi-objective classifier (MOC), by which the OAM of vortex beams can be identified with high accuracy using a small amount of data. We find that by combining CNN with different structures and MOC, the highest accuracy reaches 96.4%, validating the feasibility of the proposed scheme.
To overcome the limitation of dynamic reciprocity, a new method for designing broadband on-chip optical isolators is proposed and demonstrated based on saturated gain, which is able to support ...simplex and duplex operation modes. By connecting a saturated gain waveguide to an appropriate linear loss waveguide, broadband isolation is predicted and proved theoretically through saturated gain-induced non-reciprocal transmission. The proposed isolator is numerically demonstrated with an operating band of 59 nm and an isolation ratio of −20 dB at the central wavelength of 1550 nm. It is noteworthy that when the current pump changes, the isolator still works well and keeps the high isolation ratio at a different input power. The footprint of the whole device is 465 μm × 0.35 μm which satisfies the requirement of photonic integrated circuits. The proposed isolator, with the combined advantages of compact footprint, broadband, duplex operation and high isolation, can enable on-chip unidirectional transmission and complex topological routing designation.
Optical frequency combs have emerged as a new generation of metrological tools, driving advancements in various fields such as free-space two-way time–frequency transfer, low-noise microwave source ...generation, and gas molecule detection. Among them, fiber combs based on erbium-doped fiber mode-locked lasers have garnered significant attention due to their numerous advantages, including low noise, high system integration, and cost-effectiveness. In this review, we discuss recent developments in erbium-doped fiber combs and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of constructing fiber combs utilizing different erbium-doped mode-locked fiber lasers. First, we provide a brief introduction to the basic principles of optical frequency combs. Then, we explore erbium-doped fiber combs implemented utilizing various mode-locking techniques, such as nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR), real saturable absorber (SA), and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). Finally, we present an outlook on the future perspectives of erbium-doped fiber combs.
This work provides an overview on micromirror arrays based on different material systems such as dielectrics, element silicon, compound semiconductors, metals, and novel 2D materials. The goal is to ...work out the particular strength of each material system to enable optimum performance for various applications. In particular, this review is intended to draw attention to the fact that MEMS micro-mirrors can be successful in many other material systems besides silicon. In particular, the review is intended to draw attention to two material systems that have so far been used less for MEMS micromirror arrays, that have been less researched, and of which fewer applications have been reported to date: metallic heterostructures and 2D materials. However, the main focus is on metallic MEMS micromirror arrays on glass substrates for applications like personalized light steering in buildings via active windows, energy management, active laser safety goggles, interference microscopy, and endoscopy. Finally, the different micromirror arrays are compared with respect to fabrication challenges, switching speed, number of mirrors, mirror dimensions, array sizes, miniaturization potential for individual mirrors, reliability, lifetime, and hinge methodology.
