This volume investigates educational inequalities among children of Turkish immigrants in Austria, France, and Sweden. One of the largest immigrant groups in these countries, Turks nonetheless face ...discrimination and limited opportunities, and this study shows how those problems play out in education. One of its key findings is that systems that provide more favorable institutional arrangements lead to greater economic mobility in the second generation.
Die Klimakrise und Landnutzung sind eng miteinander verwoben und betrifft uns alle. Die Landnutzung bietet aber ein großes PotenTial zur Bewältigung der Klimakrise. Wie können diese PotenTiale im ...Sinne einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung genutzt werden, die ganzheitlich die gesellschaftlichen und natürlichen Dimensionen berücksichtigt? Dies ist ein Open-Access-Buch. Landökosysteme erbringen verschiedene unersetzbare Ökosystemleistungen für die Gesellschaft, wie etwa Nahrungsmittel oder Schutz vor Naturgefahren. Sie können eine hohe Artenvielfalt haben, sie absorbieren und speichern Kohlenstoff und bilden die Grundlage für wirtschaftliche Aktivitäten. Die Landnutzung erhöht die Erbringung mancher Ökosystemleistungen auf Kosten anderer und birgt daher Zielkonflikte. Die landbasierte Produktion, die Produktverarbeitung und der Konsum verursachen Treibhausgasemissionen und Biodiversitätsverluste. Der Klimawandel und die gewählten Anpassungsmaßnahmen verschärfen die Konfliktpotentiale. Es bedarf wissensbasierter und gesellschaftlich akzeptierter politischer Entscheidungen, um die vorhandenen Synergien verschiedener Landnutzungsformen zu nutzen und auszubauen, und gleichzeitig Zielkonflikte und unerwünschte Effekte zu minimieren. Der APCC Special Report: Landnutzung und Klimawandel in Österreich wurde im Bewusstsein der Verflechtungen der Klima- und der Biodiversitätskrise mit geopolitischen Änderungen verfasst. Er dient der Zusammenfassung und Bewertung des gegenwärtigen Wissens zum Thema Landnutzung und Klimawandel und deren Verflechtungen. Es werden die Handlungsoptionen der Anpassung und der Minderung des Klimawandels unter Berücksichtigung von Produktion, gesellschaftlichen Ansprüchen, rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen und dem Konsumverhalten vorgestellt und bewertet. Der Bericht gliedert sich in acht thematische Kapitel und eine Synopsis. Eine technische Zusammenfassung enthält die Kernbotschaften der Kapitel, und die Zusammenfassung für politische Entscheidungsträger bringt die Aussagen des Berichtes in knapper Form zur Kenntnis. Im APCC Special Report kommen 130 Autoren aus vielen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen zu Wort. Der Bericht wurde in einem offenen und transparenten Begutachtungsprozess von mehr als 50 Personen und Stakeholdern kommentiert.

Plastics, especially from packaging, have gained increasing attention in waste management, driving many policy initiatives to improve the circularity of these materials in the economy to increase resource efficiency. In this context, the EU has proposed increasing targets to encourage the recycling of (plastic) packaging. To accurately calculate the recycling rates, detailed information on the flows of plastic packaging is needed. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the waste management system for plastic packaging in Austria in 2013 using material flow analysis, taking into account the used product types and the polymer composition. The results show that 300,000 ± 3% t/a (35 kg/cap·a) of waste plastic packaging were produced, mainly composed of large and small films and small hollow bodies, including PET bottles. Correspondingly, the polymer composition of the waste stream was dominated by LDPE (46% ± 6%), PET (19% ± 4%) and PP (14% ± 6%). 58% ± 3% was collected separately, and regarding the final treatment, 26% ± 7% of the total waste stream was recovered as re-granulates, whereas the rest was thermally recovered in waste-to-energy plants (40% ± 3%) and the cement industry (33% ± 6%). The targets set by the EU and Austria were reached comfortably, although to reach the proposed future target major technological steps regarding collection and sorting will be needed. However, the current calculation point of the targets, i.e. on the input side of the recycling plant, is not deemed to be fully in line with the overall objective of the circular economy, namely to keep materials in the economy and prevent losses. It is therefore recommended that the targets be calculated with respect to the actual output of the recycling process, provided that the quality of the output products is maintained, to accurately assess the performance of the waste management system.
Electric power, as an efficient and clean energy, has considerable importance in industries and human lives. Electricity price is becoming increasingly crucial for balancing electricity generation ...and consumption. In this study, long short-term memory (LSTM) with the differential evolution (DE) algorithm, denoted as DE–LSTM, is used for electricity price prediction. Several recent studies have adopted LSTM with considerable success in certain applications, such as text recognition and speech recognition. However, problems in the application of LSTM to solving nonlinear regression and time series problems have been encountered. DE, a novel evolutionary algorithm that effectively obtains optimal solutions, is designed to identify suitable hyperparameters for LSTM. Experiments are conducted to verify the performance of the DE–LSTM model under the electricity prices in New South Wales, Germany/Austria, and France. Results indicate that the proposed DE–LSTM model outperforms existing forecasting models in terms of forecasting accuracies.

Das Buch beforscht, wie der Eintritt von Juden*Jüdinnen in die moderne Gesellschaft Wiens »als Theater« und mit theatralen Mitteln stattfand und entwirft so eine Praxeologie jüdischer Zugehörigkeit und Differenz. In vier Studien werden jüdische Erfahrungen der Moderne zwischen Zeigen und Beobachten, sozialer Schau und antisemitischer Bedrängnis als Modi des Theatralen zum Thema. Theater zeigt sich so als vielschichtige kulturelle Praxis wie als »Spiel- und Spiegelform des Lebens« (Stefan Zweig).
What types of asylum seekers are Europeans willing to accept? We conducted a conjoint experiment asking 18,000 eligible voters in 15 European countries to evaluate 180,000 profiles of asylum seekers ...that randomly varied on nine attributes. Asylum seekers who have higher employability, have more consistent asylum testimonies and severe vulnerabilities, and are Christian rather than Muslim received the greatest public support. These results suggest that public preferences over asylum seekers are shaped by sociotropic evaluations of their potential economic contributions, humanitarian concerns about the deservingness of their claims, and anti-Muslim bias. These preferences are similar across respondents of different ages, education levels, incomes, and political ideologies, as well as across the surveyed countries.This public consensus on what types of asylum seekers to accept has important implications for theory and policy.
The aim of the paper is to present renewable energy market development with particular regard paid to biofuels in the EU. The analysis included data on the share of renewables in Gross Island energy ...consumption, changes of renewable energy in the years 2004–2016 and the amount of liquid biofuels. The authors of the paper used descriptive and statistical methods to describe the changes in bioenergy development in the European Union (EU). The biggest share of biofuels and renewable waste can be seen in Latvia (31.2%), Finland (26.7%) and Sweden (24.8%). The highest percentage of wind energy in 2015 was found in: Denmark (7.2%), Portugal (4.3%), Ireland (4.0%) and Spain (3.5%). The highest share of solar energy in 2015 was found in Cyprus (3.5%), Spain (2.6%) and Greece (2.2%). The highest contribution of geothermal energy was found in 2015 in Italy (3.5%), Portugal (0.8%) and Slovenia (0,7%). Hydropower was the biggest in 2015 in Sweden (14.2%), Austria (9.6%) and Slovenia (5.0%). The highest coefficients of variation of the share of electricity from renewable energy sources were found in the years 2004–2017 in Malta (140.3%), Cyprus (101.1%) and United Kingdom (71.9%). In addition, the highest coefficients of variation of share of renewable energy sources in heating and cooling in the years 2004–2017 were found in Malta (72.4%), United Kingdom (69.81%) and Hungary (44.91%). Moreover, the highest coefficients of variation of share of renewable energy sources in transport in the years 2004–2017 were found in Finland (113.78%), Malta (115.52%) and Belgium (96.53%).
The biggest producers of ethanol and biodiesel in EU were Germany, France and Poland. Cluster analysis data show that Germany and France are of key importance in the production of biodiesel and ethanol. The biodiesel production increased in the years 2003–2017 from 719,32 million liters to 13323 million liters (increase 1852.2%). However, in the years 2014–2017 a stagnation in biofuel production was observed from 13673 million liters to 13323 million liters (−2,56%). The situation on the market and the increasing demand for green energy suggest that the production of ethanol and esters of vegetable oils will increase by 2030, which will contribute to the development of this sector.
Die Arbeit von Harald Bodenschatz (2011) und seinen Mitautor:innen zum Städtebau im faschistischen Italien hat vor zehn Jahren Wegweisendes in der Städtebauhistoriographie geleistet. Nun wurde das ...seit Jahren vergriffene Buch neu aufgelegt und behutsam erweitert. Es hat viele Folgestudien inspiriert. Eine davon ist die Arbeit der Denkmalpflegerin Birgit Knauer (2022), die sich mit der „Assanierung“ der Stadt Wien im Austrofaschismus auseinandersetzt. Die Werke zeigen, wie Städtebau durch diktatorische Regime benutzt wurde, um Repression auszuüben oder Konsens herzustellen, und als wirtschaftspolitisches Programm der beschleunigten industriellen Entwicklung sowie zur volkswirtschaftlichen Erholung in und nach Krisenzeiten diente. Dabei spielen Propaganda, Geschichtsbilder, Zukunftsverheißungen und nicht zuletzt europäische Netzwerke eine Rolle.

Victims' State is the first integrated account of how Imperial Austria and the successor Austrian Republic responded to the needs of citizen-soldiers and their families in the age of mass politics ...and the First World War. It shows that compulsory military service and war mobilization changed the mission of the Austrian state and citizens' understanding of what they were entitled to, thus showing how war victim welfare was central to shaping modern European welfare state.
This book is the first complete description of 13th century architecture in Austria. This period was significant for ist political and historical events and upheavels in the provinces of Austria, but ...at the same time for the transition from romanic to gothic style. The book is the result of the author's continuous studies in this field of architectural history for more than 35 years. Basing on his doctoral thesis of 1975 the author is outlining a completely new panorama of the development in 13th century architecture by using the results of recent investigations, reconstructions and newly interpreted historical sources. Some important results were achieved on behalf of FWF-projects under the author's direction (reconstruction of the Capella Speciosa at Klosterneuburg, research on the history of the Imperial Palace di Vienna). The results are corresponding in perfect way with the scientifical researches in neighbouring countries as Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Germany, in regard of the long range cultural communications during the Middle Ages, which in former theories were denied by presupposing a distinct stylistic retard in Austrian architecture. Highly important was the author's proof that in the 13th century in Austria existed a contemporaneity between advanced and retarded stylistic forms. The choice of the stylistic attitude mainly depended on the client. The introduction of the book gives a survey of the actual state of research, followed by three chapters, which explicate the conditions in the 12th century, differentiated geographically (alpine regions, Danube valley) and concerning the clientage (dukes, archbishops and bishops of Salzburg and Passau) as well. By this way the general tendencies and motives (Cistercian architecture of Heiligenkreuz and Zwettl; Patavian architecture at Göttweig, Kremsmünster, Vienna, St.Pölten, Tulln; architecture at Salzburg - cathedral of archbisphop Konrad III - Gurk, Seckau, Hartberg) are outlined, which dominated the further development. In the following first main part, which is describing the first half of 13th century, the important role of the Austrian sovereigns (duke Leopold VI and duke Friedrich II) as founders and benefactors of eminent church architecture is emphasized. With these works of art most actual influences of french gothic architecture came to Austria (Capella Speciosa at Klosterneuburg, cloisters at Lilienfeld and Heiligenkreuz). The quarrel in ecclesiastical policy between the Babenberg dukes of Austria and the bishops of Passau, concerning the plan to establich a further diocesy in Austria, caused a competition in the field of architecture between the two powers. Thus the bishops of Passau reconstructed their patronage churches (St.Pölten, Kremsmünster, Ardagger) in Austria in a sumptuous way. Besides this stylistically advanced architecture there existed also a building acitivity not to be neglected, which was supported by the lower aristocracy and the duke's officials, who also founded some monasteries and churches. These buildings were constructed by local workmen, who were following the traditional patterns of late romanic style (Baumgartenberg, Wilhering, Bad Deutsch Altenburg, Petronell). At the dawn of the Babenberg dynasty an important political intervention of emperor Friedrich II. von Hohenstaufen took place. Recent researches indicate that the reconstruction of St.Stephen's church in Vienna with the famous "Riesentor" with sculptural decorations in Norman Style was initiated by the emperor, even as the foundation of the castle at the place of the later Imperial Palace, which obviously followed the type of the emperor's fortresses in Sicily. Das vorliegende Buch ist die erste architekturhistorische Gesamtdarstellung der Baukunst des 13. Jahrhunderts in Österreich, einer Periode bedeutender geschichtlicher Umwälzungen in den österreichischen Ländern und zugleich Übergangszeit von der Baukunst der Romanik zur Gotik. Das Buch ist Ergebnis einer über 35jährigen Forschungstätigkeit des Autors auf diesem Gebiet. Ausgehend von den Erkenntnissen, die er 1975 in seiner Dissertation dargelegt hat, ist es dem Verfasser gelungen, die Entwicklung der Baukunst durch Auswertung laufender bauhistorischer Forschungen, Einzeluntersuchungen und neu ausgewerteter historischer Quellen in ein völlig neues Gesamtbild zu bringen. Eine Reihe wichtiger Erkenntnisse wurden im Rahmen von FWF-Projekten unter der Leitung des Autors erarbeitet (Rekonstruktion der Capella Speciosa, Forschungen zur Wiener Hofburg). Die Ergebnisse korrespondieren überzeugend mit den Forschungen in den österreichischen Nachbarländern (Tschechien, Ungarn, Slowenien, Deutschland), indem sie die aktuellen überregionalen Kulturbeziehungen im Mittelalter bestätigen, die in früheren Theorien von einem stilgeschichtlichen Entwicklungsrückstand in Österreich negiert worden waren. Eine wichtige Erkenntnis der Forschungen des Verfassers ist, dass sich die Gleichzeitigkeit avancierter und rückständiger Stilformen nachweisen lässt, wobei die jeweilige Stilwahl von der Auftraggeberschaft abhängig war. Eingeleitet wird das Buch mit einem Überblick über die Entwicklung der Forschungslage, daran schließen drei Kapitel an, die die Voraussetzungen im 12. Jahrhundert behandeln, wobei der Überblick sowohl geographisch differenziert wird (Alpenländer, Donauraum) als auch hinsichtlich der Auftraggeber (Landesfürsten, Bischöfe von Salzburg und Passau). Dabei werden wichtige Leitlinien aufgezeigt, die die weitere Entwicklung nachhaltig bestimmten (Zisterzienserarchitektur in Heiligenkreuz und Zwettl, Passauer Bautätigkeit in Göttweig, Kremsmünster, Wien, St.Pölten und Tulln, Salzburger Bautätigkeit am Dom Konrads III. in Salzburg, in Gurk, Seckau, Hartberg). Im folgenden ersten Hauptabschnitt wird für die erste Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts in den Donauländern und der Steiermark die Rolle der Landesfürsten (Leopold VI. und Friedrich II. von Babenberg) als Stifter bedeutender Sakralbauten hervorgehoben. Mit diesen Werken gelangten hochaktuelle Errungenschaften der französischen Gotik nach Österreich (Capella Speciosa in Klosterneuburg, Klosteranlagen Lilienfeld, Heiligenkreuz). Der kirchenpolitische Machtkampf der Babenberger gegen das Bistum Passau um die Errichtung eines eigenen Landesbistums in Österreich führte zu einem baulichen Wettstreit, wobei die Passauer Bischöfe ihre Eigenkirchen in Österreich durch aufwändige Umbauten aktualisierten (St.Pölten, Kremsmünster, Ardagger). Im Schatten dieser stilgeschichtlich avancierten Baukunst bestand daneben noch eine nicht geringe Bautätigkeit, die von Adeligen und landesfürstlichen Ministerialen getragen wurde und in deren Klosterstiftungen und Patronatskirchen Ausdruck fand. Diese Werke wurden allerdings von lokalen Baugruppen errichtet, die noch länger an den traditionellen spätromanischen Stilformen festhielten (Baumgartenberg, Wilhering, Bad Deutsch Altenburg, Petronell). Am Ende der Babenbergerherrschaft kommt es zu einer politischen Intervention Kaiser Friedrichs II. in Österreich, auf die nach neuesten Forschungen sowohl die Initiative zum Umbau der Wiener Stephanskirche mit dem "normannischen" Riesentor als auch der Bau der Wiener Hofburg nach dem Vorbild einer staufisch-sizilianischen Kastellburg zurückgehen. Trotz der politischen Unruhen kommt es vor der Jahrhundertmitte zu bemerkenswerten Architekturschöpfungen (Umbau der Burg Starhemberg, Grenzbefestigungen, Wienertor in Hainburg, Virgilkapelle in Wien, Karner in Tulln), in denen sich unterschiedlichste stilistische und architekturikonologische Motive ("normannische" Bauplastik, Jerusalem-Bezüge) ausdrücken.
