This work is a complete English translation of the Latin Etymologies of Isidore, Bishop of Seville (c.560–636). Isidore compiled the work between c.615 and the early 630s and it takes the form of an ...encyclopedia, arranged by subject matter. It contains much lore of the late classical world beginning with the Seven Liberal Arts, including Rhetoric, and touches on thousands of topics ranging from the names of God, the terminology of the Law, the technologies of fabrics, ships and agriculture to the names of cities and rivers, the theatrical arts, and cooking utensils. Isidore provides etymologies for most of the terms he explains, finding in the causes of words the underlying key to their meaning. This book offers a highly readable translation of the twenty books of the Etymologies, one of the most widely known texts for a thousand years from Isidore's time.
After briefly presenting the two paradigms of etymology – « étymologie-origine » vs. « étymologie-histoire » –, the article sets forth the main directions of Romanian etymological research throughout ...the 20th century and the evolution of the relation between the etymological researches at the (micro)-monographic level and their counterpart at the lexicographical stage. The author states his opinions on the fundamental requirements of modern etymological science. The main aim of the article is to precisely evaluate the concept of « multiple etymology » and its influence on present-day Romanian lexicography.
The monograph concerns the origin of the Latin -iés/-ia inflection, the topic which to this day has not been explained satisfactorily. The proposal presented in the book allows for the most economic ...solution to the problem without difficult assumptions which were present in the previous hypotheses. The author explains the origin of the formation as the result of the identification and mutual influence of three former paradigms reconstructed for Proto-Indo-European and subsequent analogical influence of the commonly used Latin noun diés ‘day’ from the fifth declension.
Apart from the hypothesis itself, the analysis of all the forms of the Latin -iés/-ia inflection is presented with an etymological commentary and illustrative examples from the original ancient texts. The question on the origin of the Latin fifth declension is also mentioned alongside the modern description of the Proto-Indo-European derivational morphology.
This study is the first attempt to reconstruct the prehistory of Arabic by examining lexical evidence of its symbiotic relationship with Ancient Egyptian already apparent from the Pyramid Texts (c. ...2613-2181 BC). It documents the contention that Ancient Egypt was a strategic site in its early prehistory.
Like every major culture, Chinese has its set of keywords:
pivotal terms of political, ethical, literary and philosophical
discourse. Tracing the origins, development, polysemy, and usages
of ...keywords is one of the best ways to chart cultural and
historical changes. This volume analyzes some of these keywords
from different disciplinary and temporal perspectives, offering a
new integrative study of their semantic richness, development
trajectory, and distinct usages in Chinese culture.
The authors of the volume explore different keywords and focus on
different periods and genres, ranging from philosophical and
historical texts of the Warring States period (453-221 BCE) to late
imperial (ca. 16th-18thcenturies CE)
literature and philosophy. They are guided by a similar set of
questions: What elevates a mere word to the status of
keyword? What sort of resonance and reverberations do we
expect a keyword to have? How much does the semantic range of a
keyword explain its significance? What kinds of arguments does it
generate? What are the stories told to illustrate its meanings?
What are political and intellectual implications of the keyword's
reevaluation? What does it mean to translate a keyword and map its
meaning against other languages?
Throughout Chinese history, new ideas and new approaches often
mean reinterpreting important words; rupture, continuities, and
inflection points are inseparable from the linguistic history of
specific terms. The premise of this book is that taking the long
view and encompassing different disciplines yield new insights and
unexpected connections. The authors, who come from the fields of
history, philosophy, and literature, explore keywords in different
genres and illuminate their multiple dimensions in various
contexts. Moreover, despite their different temporal focus, they
take into consideration the development of selected keywords from
the Warring States to the late imperial period, sometimes adding
excurses that extend to contemporary usage.
Most people think of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) as a distinctly British product. Begun in England 150 years ago, it took more than 60 years to complete and, when it was finally finished in ...1928, the British prime minister heralded it as a 'national treasure'. It maintained this image throughout the twentieth century, and in 2006 the English public voted it an 'Icon of England', alongside Marmite, Buckingham Palace and the bowler hat. However, this book shows that the dictionary is not as 'British' as we all thought. The linguist and lexicographer, Sarah Ogilvie, combines her insider knowledge and experience with impeccable research to show that the OED is in fact an international product in both its content and its making. She examines the policies and practices of the various editors, applies qualitative and quantitative analysis, and finds new OED archival materials in the form of letters, reports and proofs. She demonstrates that the OED, in its use of readers from all over the world and its coverage of World English, is in fact a global text.
Plato's Cratylus is a brilliant but enigmatic dialogue. It bears on a topic, the relation of language to knowledge, which has never ceased to be of central philosophical importance, but tackles it in ...ways which at times look alien to us. In this reappraisal of the dialogue, Professor Sedley argues that the etymologies which take up well over half of it are not an embarrassing lapse or semi-private joke on Plato's part. On the contrary, if taken seriously as they should be, they are the key to understanding both the dialogue itself and Plato's linguistic philosophy more broadly. The book's main argument is so formulated as to be intelligible to readers with no knowledge of Greek, and will have a significant impact both on the study of Plato and on the history of linguistic thought.
The transmission of good practices is one of the missions of the mobile geriatric outreach teams (EMGE). In this context, the EMGE Centre-Nord 92 has proposed two activities for caregivers in ...residential care facilities for the dependent elderly (Ehpad) in a concrete and participatory form, called "workshop". The purpose of the workshop on handling hearing aids is to help caregivers handle these technologies used to correct hearing loss in the elderly. The etymology-card game workshop is designed to help caregivers review and use medical vocabulary.
