This paper addresses the farming settlement process carried out in Chile during the twentieth century, focusing on the Italian settlement of San Manuel de Parral, Maule. The purpose is to comprehend ...the experience and the impact of this event in the life of those Italian settlers who leave their country behind in the early 1950s, in the aftermath of the World War II, aimed to better life prospects in South America. To accomplish this task I analised the minutes and proceedings of the Compañía Chileno-Italiana de Colonización (CITAL, in Spanish) –the firm which run this enterprise-, and interviews to former settlers carried out in 1992. The data shows the technical failure of this endeavour, and the subsequent hardships endured by Italian families before they could settled in other cities and towns along the Chilean Zona Central, likewise how difficult was for them to find a job. Lastly, I address the complex cultural adaptation process and the eventual repatriation of the settlers along the 1970s. My conclusion states that the way this endeavour was conceived and implemented led to the proletarianisation of these migrant families, dooming them to estrangement and economic failure.Keywords: Italian immigration; Agricultural colonization; Assisted migration; CITAL
Este artículo aborda el proceso de colonización agrícola que se desarrolló en Chile en el siglo XX, a partir del caso de la colonia italiana de San Manuel de Parral (Región del Maule). A través del análisis de actas oficiales de la Compañía Chileno-Italiana de Colonización (CITAL) y entrevistas realizadas a ex colonos en el año 1992, se busca reconstruir la experiencia y entender cuáles fueron los efectos del proceso en los inmigrantes italianos, quienes dejaron su tierra natal a principio de 1950 –en la inmediata posguerra- para buscar mejores oportunidades en Sudamérica. Los resultados dan cuenta del fracaso técnico de la colonia, y de las posteriores dificultades vividas en la inserción de las familias italianas en las ciudades de la zona central de Chile, así como de la búsqueda de trabajo en el mercado laboral local. Finalmente, se da cuenta del complejo proceso de adaptación cultural y la consiguiente repatriación, que se desarrolló especialmente a partir de los años ’70. En conclusión, se plantea que la forma en que el proyecto de colonización agrícola fue diseñado e implementado, llevó a una dinámica de proletarización de las familias migrantes, que se vieron condenadas al desarraigo y a pérdidas económicas importantes.Palabras clave: Inmigración italiana; Colonización agrícola; Migración asistida; CITAL
Background
Determining whether initiation of preterm birth was spontaneous, or through labour induction or caesarean without labour or membrane rupture is critical in surveillance and aetiological ...research on preterm birth, although this information is not explicitly included on the US Birth Certificate. Algorithms combining several fields from birth certificates have been developed to infer the initiating event, but none has been validated against manual review of original obstetric records. Our objective was to develop a birth certificate‐based algorithm to determine initiation of preterm birth and validate it by manual review of original records.
Methods
We developed an algorithm from the 2003 US Standard Birth Certificate to determine spontaneous vs. indicated preterm birth. The algorithm was first tested on obstetrical records from 80 preterm (<37 weeks) births in Columbus OH (2006–12) ed by an obstetrics research nurse and reviewed by an obstetrician–gynecologist. Onset of delivery was spontaneous if the initiating event was premature rupture of membranes (PROM) or contractions, or indicated if the initiating event was induction or caesarean without labour or PROM. The algorithm was validated in an independent sample of 100 preterm births from four hospitals.
Results
Codes for tocolysis, fetal intolerance of labour, and anaesthesia during labour did not predict labour and were dropped. The final algorithm correctly classified 73/80 cases, kappa = 0.83. In the validation, 86/100 cases were correctly classified. The kappa statistic was 0.68 (0.52, 0.83); predictive values for spontaneous and indicated onset were 85% (75%, 92%) and 89% (71%, 98%).
Conclusions
The algorithm distinguished spontaneous from indicated preterm birth, using birth certificates, with good accuracy.
Im vorliegenden Artikel werden die auf Still und auf frühe Osteopathen zurückweisenden Definitionen und Terminologien der osteopathischen Läsionskonzepte differenziert und diskutiert. Der Begriff der ...„osteopathischen Läsion” entwickelte sich auf der Basis von Stills Läsionsverständnis im Sinne einer Obstruktion von Lebensflüssigkeiten oder deren neuronalen Kontrollzentren. Der ursprüngliche Läsionsbegriff wurde meist auf Störungen der Wirbelsäulenstrukturen bezogen. Er umfasste im Weiteren aber auch alle anderen Gewebetypen einschließlich der Muskeln, Ligamente, Strukturen des Nervensystems, der Organe und ihrer membranösen Strukturen, der Haut, des Darms und des Blutes sowie die Gesundheit beeinflussende, epigenetische Faktoren. Kenntnis der Läsionskonzepte ist wesentlich für das Verständnis osteopathischer Ansätze, Modelle und Techniken sowie der Behandlungsmöglichkeiten, -zugänge und -grenzen.
The following article describes and discusses definitions and terminologies of the different concepts of osteopathic lesions, referring to Still and early osteopaths. The term „osteopathic lesion” evolved from Stills comprehension of lesions as obstructions of vital body fluids or their neural control centers. The original term „lesion” mainly referred to dysfunctions of the spinal structures, but it also comprised any other tissue such as muscles, ligaments, structures of the nervous system, organs and their membranous structures, skin, intestines, blood and epigenetic factors that influence health. Knowledge of the lesion concept is essential for the understanding of osteopathic approaches, models and techniques as well as treatment options and limitations.
RESUMEN El Lago de Chapala, ubicado en el occidente de México dentro del Rift Citala, está caracterizado por su actividad geotérmica, la cual incluye manantiales termales terrestres y sublacustres, ...halos de alteración hidrotermal, depósitos carbonatados tipo sínter y volcanes de lodo. Dentro del Lago de Chapala existen tanto manantiales sublacustres como emanaciones de asfalto que constituyen isletas. Los hidrocarburos que se generan en zonas con actividad geotérmica, continentales y marinas tienen un origen hidrotermal, ya que el agente causante de la alteración de la materia orgánica así como de la transferencia de masa es el agua caliente circulante en el sistema hidrotermal. Por ello, este tipo de hidrocarburo se denomina petróleo hidrotermal (PH). Los análisis del PH del Lago de Chapala, obtenidos por cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas (GC-MS), muestran que está formado por hidrocarburos saturados que incluyen una mezcla compleja amorfa de hidrocarburos cíclicos y ramificados (UCM). Los biomarcadores maduros, derivados de la microbiota lacustre (algas), consisten principalmente de hopanos 17α(H),21β(H) desde C27 hasta C34 (sin C28); gammacerano, terpanos tricíclicos (C20-C26, sin C22); carotano y sus productos de cracking primario; esteranos C28 y C29; y drimanos (C14-C16). El PH de Chapala no contiene hidrocarburos policíclicos aromáticos (PAH) ni n-alcanos. La composición de este PH no corresponde a residuos de petróleo convencional biodegradado. Por carecer tanto de n-alcanos como de isoprenoides y por la presencia de UCM, hopanos, esteranos y biomarcadores carotenoides, su composición es similar al PH reportado del Rift del Este de África y consistente con una generación rápida de hidrocarburos. Por lo tanto se infiere que el PH del Lago de Chapala fue generado rápida-mente a partir de materia orgánica lacustre a una temperatura inferior a la requerida para el cracking primario, por hidrotermalismo, de los alcanos a partir del kerógeno (<250 ºC). Se estima que, después de formado, el PH del Lago de Chapala fue forzado tectónicamente hasta el lecho del lago desde una profundidad estimada entre 300 y 500 m, en donde los sedimentos tienen una edad >40 ka (14C). El carbono total del PH del Lago de Chapala tiene una media δ13CPDB de -21.4 ‰ que es un valor típico para materia orgánica lacustre. La ocurrencia de PH en sistemas de rifts continentales está plenamente comprendida y, debido a su potencial, debe de ser considerada como blanco a evaluar en la exploración futura de recursos energéticos en estos sistemas tectónicos.
