In state formation research, princely houses have been a blind spot. The development of states has been discussed from many perspectives, like interstate competition, internal social conflicts, ...fiscal-military developments, etc., but at the centre of most European states, there was a princely house. These ruling houses have been overlooked in studies about state formation. What’s more, when discussing such dynasties, the vertical chronological perspective (grandfather-father-son) is all dominating, for instance in the focus on dynastic continuity, dynastic culture and representation, and the like. This collection of essays highlights the horizontal perspective (ruler, all children, siblings, cousins), in asking how the members of a princely family acted as a power network. The quest is to develop an understanding how this family network interplayed with other factors in the state formation process. This volume brings together existing knowledge of the topic with the aim of exchanging insights and furthering knowledge.
À mesure que le déclassement a été perçu comme un problème contemporain, il est devenu un objet de premier plan pour la sociologie des inégalités et, dans une moindre mesure, pour les études ...historiques qui ont privilégié les formes de mobilité ascendante, celles qui sont aussi les plus productrices de sources. En prenant en compte l’Ancien Régime tout en englobant le moment révolutionnaire, cet ouvrage collectif observe, à partir des terrains français et italiens, le phénomène du déclassement dans le cadre d’un ordre hiérarchique, rigide, pensé comme naturel donc immuable, mais qui n’était pas immobile, alternant des périodes de plus ou moins grande ouverture ou fermeture, mais aussi dans une phase de rupture, de transition et de redéfinition où la perte de statut et de fortune a pu s’accompagner d’opportunités de reclassement. Les études ici réunies ont été guidées par un questionnaire commun : montrer la difficulté d’appréhender des situations de déclassement où se mêlaient, selon des degrés variables, appauvrissement, déshonneur, déchéance morale ; restituer la parole – rare - des acteurs historiques sur leur expérience du déclassement ; montrer la difficulté de mesurer le déclassement à partir de marqueurs objectifs tant il s’agissait d’un phénomène relatif, parfois paradoxal, conditionné par un environnement social lui-même mouvant ; envisager le déclassement comme un processus en s’attachant à l’interprétation de trajectoires personnelles et collectives ; interroger, enfin, le rôle joué par l’État dans l’ordonnancement des frontières sociales.
La mer constitue le personnage principal de chacun des tableaux des « Ports de France » réalisés par Joseph Vernet entre 1753 et 1765. Le regard porte en premier lieu sur les navires amarrés, perçoit ...ensuite l’intense activité des quais, puis distingue des individus parmi lesquels… des femmes, bien présentes dans un monde maritime traditionnellement masculin. Cet ouvrage entend attirer l’attention sur les multiples déclinaisons du rapport qu’entretiennent les femmes avec la mer, en variant points de vue et échelles d’observation. Il rassemble des travaux jusque-là dispersés, en histoire mais aussi en littérature et en histoire de l’art, pour une époque moderne débordant sur le xixe siècle et qui s’inscrit dans une perspective européenne. L’histoire maritime et littorale d’un côté et de l’autre, l’histoire des femmes et du genre : passionnant croisement des sources ô combien fécond pour qui se donne la peine de revisiter les archives, bien souvent de lire entre les lignes ou encore d’interpréter les silences. Les quinze contributions réunies ici en témoignent. Faire face à l’absence et savoir gérer celle-ci, vivre de la mer, approcher l’océan, le contempler et parfois s’en désintéresser : hors des clichés, cette union n’est pas contre nature.

The book argues that cross-cultural trade was predicated on and generated familiarity among strangers, but could coexist easily with religious prejudice. It analyzes instances in which business cooperation among coreligionists and between strangers relied on language, customary norms, and social networks more than the progressive rise of state and legal institutions.
