My research (Ciclo narrativo sobre el Gaviero: o del discurso posmoderno en la escritura de Alvaro Mutis) investigates the novels written by the Colombian writer Alvaro Mutis (La nieve del almirante, ...Abdul Bashur sonador de navios, Un bel morir, Amirbar, Triptico de mar y tierra and Ilona Llega con la lluvia) these novels involve a common protagonist, Maqroll el Gaviero. This character illustrates attitudes that are common in the reality of Western culture called postmodernity. I divided my dissertation into three chapters: the first chapter is about Alvaro Mutis' work and current criticism. The second Chapter is a theoretical approach from different authorities focused on the so called Post-Modern condition. It includes the connection between Europe-North America ideas and those that come from Latin American voices, and as well as how Alvaro Mutis' work is susceptible to this connection. The third chapter analysis the novels of the author as related to the adventures of Maqroll el Gaviero. Mutis' narrative breaks down the concept of genre, the distinction between fiction and reality and creates open endings. His characters such as Gaviero, Abdul Bashur and Ilona, who are fragmented subjects, live a life style against conventional bourgeois life.
