Within the recently called "economic populism" theoretical framework, this article analyses the behaviour and purpose of Lázaro Cárdenas' economic policy during his presidential term (1934-1940). The result of this research is in opposition to the conventional wisdom which states that monetary and fiscal policy was essentially expansionary in order to finance Cárdenas' economic and social program. However, this study considers the behaviour of Mexico's macroeconomic policy and its impact in the economy as a whole, and it is shown that neither Cárdenas' fiscal nor monetary policies were expansionary: the fiscal deficit was very low and the relative expansion of monetary policy was caused by the central bank as well as the commercial banks and the public in general. Moreover, it is clear that the government exercised fiscal discipline and a sound countercyclical economic policy during the crisis of 1938.
