This volume, in Studies in the Social and Cultural History of Modern Warfare series, examines how France, Belgium and the Netherlands emerged from the military collapse and humiliating Nazi ...occupation they suffered during the Second World War. Rather than traditional armed conflict, the human consequences of Nazi policies were resistance, genocide and labour migration to Germany. Pieter Lagrou offers a genuinely comparative approach to these issues, based on extensive archival research; he underlines the divergence between ambiguous experiences of occupation and the univocal post-war patriotic narratives which followed. His book reveals striking differences in political cultures as well as close convergence in the creation of a common Western European discourse, and uncovers disturbing aspects of the aftermath of the war, including post-war antisemitism and the marginalisation of resistance veterans. Brilliantly researched and fluently written, this book will be of central interest to all scholars and students of twentieth-century European history.

Synthetic materials have often been studied from a producer perspective, ...emphasizing their efforts to introduce new or improved materials in the plants of processors.In this article processors are central, their knowl-edge base is emphasized and it is suggested that involvement of the material's producer increases with the extent to which the material disrupts the markets and technologies of processors.
A traditional criticism of currency boards is that they impart a deflationary bias to growing economies. Three factors, however, may inhibit the bias: increases in the velocity of money; increases in ...the monetary base, which under a currency board occur only through balance‐of‐payments surpluses; and increases in the money multiplier. This article investigates each of the factors in Fiji, Ghana, Jamaica and Malaya over various periods near the end of the colonial era. Except in Malaya, where the money multiplier declined, all helped prevent deflationary outcomes. In broad terms, growth in the monetary base was the most important.

No-one who followed the European Football Championship finals in England in the summer of 1996 could be in doubt about the power of football to galvanise a nation and its people. For a brief period ...the performance of the English national team gave the country back its national identity and pride in a way that nothing since the World Cup win in 1966 had achieved. The bombing of the heart of its second city got far, far less media coverage, and as far as one can judge these things, less popular concern outside Manchester itself, than a football tournament. The miraculous escape from death involved may have had something to do with this. Damage was confined to bricks and mortar and a relatively few, though severe, injuries, but the contrast was overwhelming. This article is concerned with the role of soccer in the creation and moulding of migrant identity in Australia for that generation who arrived in the 20 years or so after the Second World War. The scale may be smaller than that witnessed in Europe, but the consequences are, in their way, equally profound.

In New Zealand, after the Second World War, the share of manufacturing in GDP rose relative to the share of agriculture. Although the government lacked a clearly articulated industrial policy, it was ...increasingly drawn into the promotion and support of firms in manufacturing. The Murupara pulp and paper scheme was the most spectacular instance of state intervention in the first two postwar decades. Tasman, the company set up to operate the pulp and paper mill, was a joint venture between the state, a New Zealand construction firm called Fletchers, and British multinationals. Tasman soon became New Zealand’s leading exporter of manufactured products. The need to secure the market for Tasman’s newsprint exports was one of the main reasons for the negotiation of a partial free trade agreement between New Zealand and Australia in 1965. This article explains the early history of Murupara, and discusses its contribution to industrial development and diversification in New Zealand.
