I test for welfare-induced migration by comparing AFDC participation in border counties to interior counties within states. If migration costs are lower for border-county residents, border counties ...on the high-benefit side of a state border should have higher welfare participation relative to interior counties of the same state. Border counties on the low-benefit side should have lower welfare participation relative to interior counties of the same state. The results obtained using county-level data from 1970–90 indicate that having a neighbor with benefits that are $100 lower increases AFDC expenditures in border counties by 4.0–6.8 percent relative to interior counties.

Between the late 1970s and the early 1980s, Nayra Atiya gathered the oral histories of five Egyptian men: a fisherman, an attorney, a scholar, a business- man, and a production manager. Through ...personal interviews over the course of several years, Atiya intimately captured the everyday triumphs and struggles of these young men in a rapidly changing Egyptian society. These tender stories of childhood experiences in the rural countryside, of the rigors of schooling, and of the many challenges in navigating adulthood shed light on both the rich diversity of Egyptian society and the values and traditions that are shared by all Egyptians. The concept ofshahaama-a code of honor that demands loyalty, generosity, and a readiness to help others-is threaded throughout the narratives, reflecting its deeply rooted presence in Egyptian culture. Moving beyond leaden stereotypes of the oppressive Middle Eastern male, these candid self-portraits reveal the complexity of male identity in contemporary Egyptian society, highlighting the men's desires for economically viable lives, the same desires that fuel the many Egyptians today working toward revolutionary change.
In 1970 the ‘cold war’ was still cold, Northern Ireland's troubles were escalating, the UK's relations with the European Economic Community (EEC) were unclear, and corporatist approaches to the ...economy precariously persisted. By 1990 Communism was crumbling world-wide, Thatcher's economic revolution had occurred, terrorism in Northern Ireland was waning, ‘multi-culturalism’ was in place, family structures were changing fast, and British political institutions had become controversial. Seven analytic chapters pursue these changes and accumulate rich detail on changes in international relations, landscape and townscape, social framework, family and welfare structures, economic policies and realities, intellect and culture, politics and government. The concluding chapter ranges chronologically even more widely to bring out the interaction of past and present, then asks how far the UK had by 1990 identified its world role. This book includes a full chronological table and an ample index of names and themes. This book has two overriding aims: to show how British institutions evolved, but also to illuminate changes in the British people: their hopes and fears, values and enjoyments, failures and achievements.
This article uses the 1970, 1980, and 1990 Public Use Samples of the U.S. census to document what happened to immigrant earnings in the 1980s and to determine if pre-1980 immigrant flows reached ...earnings parity with natives. The relative entry wage of successive immigrant cohorts declined by 9% in the 1970s and by an additional 6% in the 1980s. Although the relative wage of immigrants grows by 10% during the first 2 decades after arrival, recent immigrants will earn 15%-20% less than natives throughout much of their working lives.
This paper finds evidence in favor of the claim that imported machinery leads to higher growth in developing countries. Using panel data, we find that investment in domestically produced equipment ...reduces the growth rate while investment in imported equipment increases it. The advantage of this study over the paper of Lee Journal of Development Economics, 48 (1) (1995) 91 is that since we make a distinction between imported and domestically produced
equipment, we are able to distinguish our hypothesis from the DeLong and Summers hypothesis that equipment investment in general contributes more to growth.
We present new evidence on the effects of disability discrimination laws based on variation induced by state-level antidiscrimination measures passed prior to the Americans with Disabilities Act ...(ADA). The evidence expands upon other research that focuses solely on the impact of the ADA by using a "quasi-experimental" framework that generates treatment and comparison groups. We find that disability discrimination laws are associated with lower relative earnings of the disabled, with slightly lower disabled relative labor force participation rates, but are not associated with lower relative employment rates for the disabled once we control for pre-existing employment trends among the disabled.
This article provides estimates of active life expectancy, defined as disability-free life expectancy, for males and females for three dates: 1970, 1980, and 1990. Increases in life expectancy during ...the 1980s were concentrated in years without disability. This contrasts with the preceding decade during which almost all of the increase in life expectancy was in disabled years. Recent increases in both total life expectancy and disability-free life expectancy have been greater for males than for females. The primary reason for the increase in disability-free life during the 1980s is a decrease in the proportion of the population who are disabled among those in their late 50s and their 60s.
