Naegleria fowleri is a free-living ameba that causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare but usually fatal disease. We analyzed trends in recreational water exposures associated with PAM ...cases reported during 1978-2018 in the United States. Although PAM incidence remained stable, the geographic range of exposure locations expanded northward.
The intermediate-age Magellanic Cloud clusters NGC 1978 and 419 are each found to contain substantial numbers of pulsating asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, both oxygen rich and carbon rich. Each ...cluster also contains two pulsating AGB stars which are infrared sources with a large mass-loss rate. Pulsation masses have been derived for the AGB variables, from the lowest luminosity O-rich variables to the most evolved infrared sources. It is found that the stars in NGC 1978 have a mass of 1.55 M⊙ early on the AGB while the NGC 419 stars have a mass of 1.87 M⊙ early on the AGB. These masses are in good agreement with those expected from the cluster ages determined by main-sequence turn-off fitting. Non-linear pulsation models fitted to the highly evolved AGB stars show that a substantial amount of mass-loss has occurred during the AGB evolution of these stars. An examination of the observed mass-loss on the AGB, and the AGB tip luminosities, shows that in both clusters the mass-loss rates computed from the formula of Vassiliadis & Wood reproduce the observations reasonably well. The mass-loss rates computed from the formula of Blöcker terminate the AGB in both clusters at a luminosity which is much too low.
A new species of the genus Suwallia Ricker, 1943, S. rostrata sp. nov., from Xizang of southwestern China is described, illustrated and compared with similar species. Alloperla kurentzovi Zhiltzova & ...Zapekina-Dulkeit, 1977, A. kurilensis Zhiltzova, 1978, A. teleckojensis mal, 1939 are reported for the first time from China. The diagnostic features of these species are illustrated with color images.
Sostiene así que, "f or posthuman theory, the subject is a transversal entity, fully immersed in and immanent to a network of non-human (animal, vegetable, viral) relations" (The Posthuman 193)- Además, afirma, "contemporary science and biotechnologies affect every fiber and structure of the living and have altered dramatically our understanding of what counts as the basic frame of reference for the human today" (The Posthuman 40). Recent narratives from various countries in Latin America have simultaneously extended and problematized this vision of technological life, and done so with much greater frequency than we have seen in the past, with both established and new artists working through the implications of a culture increasingly impacted by new technology ...
Historical aerial photographs are a valuable source of data for investigating past earthquakes, volcanic activities, ice mass balance and land changes in the pre-modern era. Scan resolution for ...digitising the historical archives is an important factor in photogrammetric processes, but the effects have not been quantified yet. In this paper, we use the 1978 Ms 7.4 Tabas-e-Golshan earthquake in eastern Iran as a case study to test how scan resolution affects digitisation and hence the measurements of deformation. We scanned 6 aerial photographs that were acquired in 1956 with 150, 300, 600 and 1200 dots per inch (dpi), and generated four sets of pre-earthquake digital elevation model (DEM) covering the Tabas fold. By differencing the pre-earthquake DEMs and the post-earthquake DEM derived from SPOT-6 data acquired in 2013, we made four measurements of slip on the Tabas fold. We compared our measurements to the published model which was derived from matching the pre-earthquake Hexagon Keyhole-9 US image and the post-earthquake SPOT-2 and SPOT-6 images, and found that the 600 dpi scans yield the most consistent result among the four different resolutions, with a misfit of 0.7 m. A different resolution might well be better for a different set of aerial photographs, depending on the quality and photographic scale of the images. We scanned 20 aerial photographs that cover the Kurit fold to the south of the Tabas fold with 600 dpi and used them to investigate the slip on that segment. Similarly, DEMs were extracted first to produce the DEM of difference (DoD). Five swath profiles taken from the DoD show clear discontinuities across two fault strands, i.e. the main Kurit fault (the western strand) and a back thrust (the eastern strand). Based on the profile measurements, we implemented Monte Carlo modelling of elastic dislocation and obtained a slip of 1.4 m and 2.2 m on the western and eastern strands respectively. By combining all the information about the earthquake and postseismic slip, we inferred a coseismic slip of 3.5 m on the detachment fault by which most of the seismic moment was released. This slip enhanced the applied load on part of the Kurit fault, which is partly responsible for the long-lasting postseismic deformation in the region.
•Deformation of pre-modern earthquakes can be measured using historical archives.•We quantified the effects of different scan resolutions on the accuracy of results.•600 dpi is recommended for digitising historical aerial photographs.•We extended the analysis of the 1978 Iran earthquake using the new slip model.
Emergency responders must "see" the effects of an earthquake clearly and rapidly for effective response. This paper presents a novel use of cell phone and information technology to measure ground ...motion intensity parameters. The phone sensor is an imperfect device and has a limited operational range. Thus, shake table tests were performed to evaluate their reliability as seismic monitoring instruments. Representative handheld devices, either rigidly connected to the table or free to move, measured shaking intensity parameters well. Bias in 5%-damped spectral accelerations measured by phones was less than 0.05 and 0.2 log(g) during one-dimensional (1-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) shaking in frequencies ranging from 1 Hz to 10 Hz. They did tend to overestimate the Arias Intensity, but this error declined for stronger motions with larger signal-to-noise ratios. With these ubiquitous measurement devices, a more accurate and rapid portrayal of the damage distribution during an earthquake can be provided.

Sintering of Pt nanoparticles dispersed on a planar SiO₂ support was studied by in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A time-lapsed TEM image series of the Pt nanoparticles, acquired during ...the exposure to 10mbar synthetic air at 650°C, reveal that the sintering was governed by the Ostwald ripening mechanism. The in situ TEM images also provide information about the temporal evolution of the Pt particle size distribution and of the growth or decay of the individual nanoparticles. The observed Pt nanoparticle changes compare well with predictions made by mean-field kinetic models for ripening, but deviations are revealed for the time-evolution for the individual nanoparticles. A better description of the individual nanoparticle ripening is obtained by kinetic models that include local correlations between neighboring nanoparticles in the atom-exchange process.
