Race and racial diversity are important aspects of America and have been shown to substantially affect social relations and the political system, often in ways inconsistent with the values of ...equality. However, greater civic association and a general sense of community, embodied in the concept of social capital, are said to have tremendous beneficial effects and profoundly influence American society. This 2007 study juxtaposes and critically assesses two bodies of research that have reached different conclusions on these issues. Is America's legacy of racial inequality an 'evil twin' of the benefits of social capital? By analysing the social outcomes for racial minorities, in addition to other dimensions of American politics, the author shows that the impact of racial diversity consistently outweighs that of social capital.

It assesses the ways ‘the people’ have been shaped by the history of the republic, and, in turn, have informed ways of visualising society, the country’s political culture, institutional architecture and framed the parameters and repertoires of political action.Drawing on extensive archival research and contributions from historical sociology and social movement research, Spyros A. Sofos enriches the ways of approaching the ‘popular’ by proposing ways of integrating identity, discourse, strategy, organisation and leadership in the articulation of ‘the people’ in political discourse and action.
A key impetus for the implementation of the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction was the protection of children from the harmful effects of their wrongful ...removal or retention. This article considers how well the Convention is achieving this aim in light of the challenges it faces in a global society that has changed significantly since its introduction. Two key aspects of the Convention’s operation are addressed in this regard: (i) The intersection between domestic violence and the exception to return in Article 13(1)(b); and (ii) the adoption of practices to enable abducted children to receive information about, and be given effective opportunities to express their views and be heard in, Convention cases. The article discusses why, how, and to what extent the Convention needs to be nurtured to best position it to meet current and future challenges and demands, including the current differences in interpretation and implementation globally. Suggestions are made to help future-proof the Convention so that children can be best protected in the way envisioned by the Convention.
Nearly half of all countries emerging from civil conflict relapse into war within a few years of signing a peace agreement. The postwar trajectories of armed groups vary from organizational cohesion ...to dissolution, demilitarization to remilitarization. In Organized Violence after Civil War, Daly analyzes evidence from thirty-seven militia groups in Colombia, demonstrating that the primary driving force behind these changes is the variation in recruitment patterns within, and between, the warring groups. She documents the transition from war to peace through interviews with militia commanders, combatants and victims. Using rich ex-combatant survey data and geo-coded information on violence over fifty years of war, Daly explains the dynamics inside armed organizations and the strategic interactions among them. She also shows how the theory may be used beyond Colombia, both within the region of Latin America and across the rest of the world.
Esta investigación describe trazas del inconsciente en los discursos de Eduardo Frei Montalva, presidente chileno entre 1964 y 1970, con el objetivo de comprender el proceso histórico de la guerra ...fría y de la dictadura cívico-militar. Se analizan dos discursos enunciados como candidato a la Presidencia de la República y como opositor a la dictadura. Tal como lo establece Levi-Strauss, existe una cercanía entre mito y cosmovisión política, pues ambos permiten comprender e inteligibilizar la realidad. El discurso político es una cosmovisión, una estructura, contiene una implicación simbólica e imaginaria. El análisis se hizo a través de una indagación semántica (identificación simbólica) como pulsional (identificación imaginaria) del texto sonoro. Se evidenció que, para el hablante, el espacio del cuerpo está forcluido durante la dictadura y en plena presencia en la guerra fría, donde el Partido es la figura mediadora que cambiaría el estado de las cosas.
Abstract
Based on a sample of 124 developing countries over the period 1980–2016, we find that default increases inequality. This result, which passes a series of robustness tests, is sensitive to ...the size of the debt in default, the duration of the default episode, the institutional quality, the level of development, and the type of default (on external or domestic debt) and may persist until 5 years after the end of the default episode. Besides, the declines in redistributive capacity characterized by lower taxes and subsidies and social spending are identified as channels through which default increases inequality in default countries vis-à-vis nondefault countries. Finally, additional results show that default also raises wealth inequality.

He is as much a topic of debate in ...Zimbabwe and beyond as the late president Robert Gabriel Mugabe. Tsvangirai's legacy, like Mugabe's, remains indisputably controversial and conflicted. Broadly, the divided opinion on the Tsvangirai legacy can be represented, firstly, by those who argue that Tsvangirai was the champion of democracy and the face of the struggle for human rights in Zimbabwe. In this light, Tsvangirai has been variously described as a "selfless...people's hero", a "colossus of the struggle for democracy", "the commander of the struggle", "a symbol of courage and resistance", and "the doyen of constitutionalism" in Zimbabwe. On the other hand, critics have described Tsvangirai as a "sell-out", "a Judas Iscariot", "traitor", and "coward", among other nefarious and pejorative characterisations. Since opening in 1977, IRCAM has been a prominent meeting point for international composers. Nevertheless, the Spanish presence at the French institution was rather rare during the twentieth century; ...we need to wait until the twenty-first century to detect a larger number of Spaniards developing their creative projects at IRCAM. After a succinct overview of the history of Spanish electroacoustic music, I will study the evolution of the presence of Spaniards at IRCAM-from attending courses, to commissions and productions, to engagement with the pedagogical team-willing to detect any possible tendencies or fashions over time. In particular, I will focus on two different moments: I will observe José Manuel López López's work as the first Spanish pupil at the French institute in the early 1990s, and I will showcase some recent projects by young Spanish composers with rising careers. Both sides will demonstrate the rapid evolution of technological novelties 'made at IRCAM' within the last 25 years.
