Patriation and Its Consequences examines the political events and struggles that resulted in the 1981 agreement to patriate the Canadian constitution and sheds light on the political consequences of ...this key moment in Canadian history.
In the existing literature, conditional forecasts in the vector autoregressive (VAR) framework have not been commonly presented with probability distributions. This paper develops Bayesian methods ...for computing the exact finite-sample distribution of conditional forecasts. It broadens the class of conditional forecasts to which the methods can be applied. The methods work for both structural and reduced-form VAR models and, in contrast to common practices, account for parameter uncertainty in finite samples. Empirical examples under both a flat prior and a reference prior are provided to show the use of these methods.
This paper provides empirical support for the notion that Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (ARCH) in daily stock return data reflects time dependence in the process generating ...information flow to the market. Daily trading volume, used as a proxy for information arrival time, is shown to have significant explanatory power regarding the variance of daily returns, which is an implication of the assumption that daily returns are subordinated to intraday equilibrium returns. Furthermore, ARCH effects tend to disappear when volume is included in the variance equation.

Tournament mechanisms suggest the need for ever larger rewards to motivate those at the highest organizational levels. But arguments for the efficiency of executive pay compression have also been ...made. This study reports the results of an empirical investigation of executive compensation using over two-hundred firms and in excess of two thousand executives per year over a 5-year period. Results are consistent with the operation of tournaments but fail to find support for the empirical importance of considerations of pay equity at the top of corporations.

This is the sixth volume on Canada in international affairs produced by The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University. As in the past the book is organized around the ...most recent calendar year and contains an analysis and assessment of Canadian foreign policies as well as the environment that constrains and shapes them. Our intention is to contribute to the continuing debate about appropriate policy choices for Canada. The theme of the 1989 edition is "the challenge of change." Contributors examine many of the very significant events of this past year—among them the changes in the Communist world, in the global economy, in Southern Africa and Central America—and the Canadian responses to them.
