In this commentary, a number of problematic aspects of the studies presented in the target article are discussed. Suggestions have been made for further analyses of some of the data and for ...additional experimental investigations.
Listeners are bound to be struck by the effect of a monophonic chanted "Kyrie eleison" giving way to dense, trembling instrumental chord clusters in the choral Symphony no. 2 (1980) or of electric ...guitar, bass, and drum kit suddenly appearing following passages based on serial techniques in the Requiem (1975). According to Ivashkin, the finished Cello Concerto was unique among Schnittke's works with respect to its approach to dissonance and expression. On a surface level, the Concerto for Choir is immediately distinguished from many of Schnittke's earlier choral works by the uniformity of its orchestration; gone are the electric guitar, vibraphone, and other attention-grabbing instruments found in pieces like the Symphony no. 2 and the Requiem. ...the text can be heard clearly throughout the piece and is free of obstruction from polyphonic writing or instrumental accompaniment, and no sudden changes of timbre interrupt the mellifluous choral soundscape.

Initially formed in 1987, The Flirtations billed themselves as "the world's most famous, openly-gay, all-male, politically active, multicultural, a cappella singing doo-wop group." Over the course of ...the next decade, The Flirts - as they were affectionately known - recorded three albums, crisscrossed the globe to perform at gay pride events and AIDS rallies, sang in small theaters and concert venues, and even appeared in a Hollywood film. Committed advocates of LGBT rights, feminist movement, multiculturalism, and AIDS activism. The Flirtations used the nostalgic sounds of close-harmony a cappella singing to deliver political messages, enlighten listeners, and entertain audiences. Through fluctuations in membership, personality conflicts, and the AIDS-related deaths of two founding members, The Flirtations kept singing and left behind a unique repository of queer music at the end of the 20th century. Using a combination of previously unavailable archival materials, new interviews with surviving members of the group, and close readings of select musical examples, I situate The Flirtations within the history of US close-harmony singing and examine the queer politics of a cappella in their music.

This paper presents a method for automatic music transcription applied to audio recordings of a cappella performances with multiple singers. We propose a system for multi-pitch detection and voice ...assignment that integrates an acoustic and a music language model. The acoustic model performs spectrogram decomposition, extending probabilistic latent component analysis (PLCA) using a six-dimensional dictionary with pre-extracted log-spectral templates. The music language model performs voice separation and assignment using hidden Markov models that apply musicological assumptions. By integrating the two models, the system is able to detect multiple concurrent pitches in polyphonic vocal music and assign each detected pitch to a specific voice type such as soprano, alto, tenor or bass (SATB). We compare our system against multiple baselines, achieving state-of-the-art results for both multi-pitch detection and voice assignment on a dataset of Bach chorales and another of barbershop quartets. We also present an additional evaluation of our system using varied pitch tolerance levels to investigate its performance at 20-cent pitch resolution.
