Background
We report a case of acute renal failure with loin pain and patchy renal ischemia after anaerobic exercise (ALPE) caused by sudden training resumption.
Case presentation
A 19‐year‐old Asian ...man who was a college American football player presented with severe back pain, headache, and malaise. He developed acute kidney injury without myoglobinuria. Based on the typical medical history and symptoms, we made a diagnosis of ALPE. Symptoms improved within a few days, and serum creatinine levels improved after discharge. He resumed training, adjusting his load step by step.
Conclusion
During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, many athletes were unable to undergo adequate training. Long‐term de‐training leads to decreased various organ function and reduces the anaerobic threshold. Rapid resumption after prolonged de‐training may put individuals at risk of developing ALPE.

Tourmaline is known as a forensic mineral that can be used to reconstruct the history of its host rock. Metamorphic rocks are important hosts of tourmaline, where it is stable over a wide P-T range. ...At Alpe Sponda, tourmaline occurs as an accessory mineral in paragonite-free kyanite-staurolite-bearing metapelitic schists, which at Pizzo Forno contain several lenses of tourmaline-rich, cordierite-garnet-kyanite-paragonite-bi otite schists. These lenses are mineralogically distinct, as they lack both quartz and staurolite, and they contain large amounts of tourmaline (up to 20-25 vol. %). The samples from these lenses are rich in Li and B and exhibit an unusual bulk-rock composition characterized by low Si, but high Al, Mg and Na contents. All samples are enriched in light rare earth elements (REE) relative to the heavy REE and have a minor negative Ce anomaly (average Ce/Ce* = 0.91 plus or minus 0.02), as well as a pronounced negative Eu anomaly (average Eu/Eu* = 0.58 plus or minus 0.03). Tourmaline is dravite and/or 'oxy-dravite' with a tendency to povondraite, showing strong colour and chemical zoning. Garnet is also chemically zoned, and both tourmaline and garnet grew during prograde metamorphism. Cordierite has elevated Na and Be contents (Na-Be cordierite), and Li is mainly partitioned into this mineral. Based on the REE a development of tourmaline owing to hydrothermal processes such as metasomatism can be excluded. This is consistent with field relationships, which do not provide evidence for major influx of post-metamorphic fluids or partial melting. The layer from which the samples were collected can be interpreted as an evaporitic layer, which was probably deposited within a clay-rich environment in an intramontane basin. This conclusion is supported by tectonic discrimination diagrams, in which the Alpe Sponda samples plot in the field of an active continental margin. Mineral equilibrium modelling based on the original bulk-rock compositions yielded peak metamorphic conditions of amphibolite-facies grade (T = 590-660 degree C and P = 6.4-7.6 kbar), which is consistent with the P-T conditions estimated previously for this part of the Central Alps.
Planinske koče so v neposeljenem gorskem svetu skoraj edini lokalni vir onesnaževanja. V raziskavi smo opredelili štiri okoljske vplive planinskih koč: oskrbovanje in ravnanje z odpadki, ogrevanje in ...pridobivanje električne energije, oskrba z vodo in ravnanje z odpadnimi vodami ter število in obnašanje obiskovalcev. S pomočjo ankete smo ocenili okoljske vplive izbranih planinskih koč. Najbolj problematična sta velika količina odpadkov in porabljene vode, kot dobro lahko označimo oskrbovanje, kot zelo dobro ogrevanje koč in pridobivanje električne energije.
Gorska območja, zlasti zavarovana območja, so precej bolj občutljiva od nižinskih, saj so njihove nosilne sposobnosti manjše. Prispevek govori o načrtovanih in izvedenih projektih umirjanja prometa v slovenskem delu Julijskih Alp, s katerimi želijo lokalni deležniki zmanjšati negativne učinke prometa na gorsko naravo in nezadovoljstvo zaradi prometne gneče.
A 26-year-old Japanese man without hypouricemia and with 3 previous episodes of seizures concurrent with acute kidney injury (AKI) was admitted due to an epileptic seizure, lower back pain and AKI. ...His creatinine kinase levels were slightly elevated. Patchy renal ischemia on contrast-enhanced computed tomography and persistent residual contrast medium was observed, consistent with acute renal failure with severe loin pain and patchy renal ischemia after anaerobic exercise (ALPE). Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) demonstrated signal changes in the corresponding area. ALPE should be considered a cause of AKI following seizures. We recommend DWI as an alternative diagnostic modality.
The Schlern and Seiser Alm area (South Tyrol, Italy) is a classical locality for studies of Middle Triassic platform to basin transitions, yet details of the palaeoecology of the rich benthic faunas ...of this area have been insufficiently known. We present herein a detailed palaeoecological study of the fauna from the Schlernplateau beds (Late Ladinian to Early Carnian) and the more or less time-equivalent Pachycardientuffe (Late Ladinian), which is based on quantitative faunal data. Both the palaeoecology and sedimentary features suggest that the fauna of the Schlernplateau beds represents a lagoonal soft-bottom fauna. The high species richness of the fauna and the locally restricted occurrences of fossils indicate an open-lagoon setting palaeogeographically close to an ocean inlet. The high evenness of the fauna is probably a result of time-averaging. In contrast, the fauna of the Pachycardientuffe shows clear indications of transportation. Ecological features of this fauna and palaeogeographic reconstructions suggest three potential source areas: (1) the lagoon represented by the Schlernplateau beds, (2) the reef fringing this lagoon and (3) a shallow clastic coast of a nearby volcanic island and/or submarine high. A comparison between diversities of selected Early and Middle Triassic lithological units revealed the increasing species richness of all major benthic taxa during the Middle Triassic and a shift from bivalve-dominated Early Triassic faunas to gastropod-dominated faunas.

S pomočjo ugotovitev, pridobljenih s terenskim delom, so bile opravljene morfometrične analize, po katerih smo začrtali skrajno mejo poledenitvenega sunka in izdelali tridimenzionalno rekonstrukcijo topografije površja takratnega ledenika.

Over 150 years of research in the Circum-Alpine region have produced a vast amount of data on the lakeshore and wetland settlements found throughout the area. Particularly in the northern region, ...dendrochronological studies have provided highly accurate sequences of occupation, which have correlated, in turn, to palaeoclimatic reconstructions in the area. The result has been the general conclusion that the lake-dwelling tradition was governed by climatic factors, with communities abandoning the lakeshore during periods of inclement conditions, and returning when the climate was more favourable. Such a cyclical pattern occurred from the 4th millennium BC to 800 BC, at which time the lakeshores were abandoned and never extensively re-occupied. Was this final break with a long-lasting tradition solely the result of climatic fluctuation, or were cultural factors a more decisive influence for the decline of lake-dwelling occupation?Studies of material culture have shown that some of the Late Bronze Age lake-dwellings in the northern Alpine region were significant centres for the production and exchange of bronzework and manufactured products, linking northern Europe to the southern Alpine forelands and beyond. However, during the early Iron Age the former lake-dwelling region does not show such high levels of incorporation to long-distance exchange systems. Combining the evidence of material culture studies with occupation patterns and burial practices, this volume proposes an alternative to the climatically-driven models of lake-dwelling abandonment. This is not to say that climate change did not influence those communities, but that it was only one factor among many. More significantly, it was a combination of social choice to abandon the shore, and subsequent cultural developments that inhibited the full scale reoccupation of the lakes.
Acute renal failure with severe loin pain and patchy renal ischemia after anaerobic exercise (ALPE) is exercise‐induced acute renal failure that occurs without myoglobinuria. We describe a typical ...case involving an 18‐year‐old man. Generally, patients with ALPE are advised to avoid anaerobic exercise due to risk of recurrence, but our patient continued and went on to become a professional cyclist without relapse. About 51% of ALPE cases involve patients with renal hypouricemia. His serum uric acid levels were rather high, at 6.4 mg/dL. He is the first patient with ALPE to succeed as a professional athlete in an anaerobic sport.
