Thomas Münzter, who died in the Peasants’ Revolt in 1525, was remembered as the revolutionary firebrand of the Reformation. His theology is an important component of early modern theology, with its ...mix of the mystical and the apocalyptic, prioritising experience of God, and its subordination of Scripture and tradition to that experience. His legacy in terms of intellectual history has been more far-reaching than appears, evincing a pattern of religion which was to have a significant impact, albeit indirectly, on revolutionary theology in England in the seventeenth century and later.
Modernity s understanding of the primacy of the individual represents a significant challenge to a holistic understanding of the vocation of the church. Furthermore, individualism, that is the ...understanding of oneself as separate and apart from others, is often the foundation for violence against the other as the interconnectivity, and therefore the dependence and vulnerability inherent within a relationship, is lost. When the church is relegated to serve individuals as private and individualised belief systems, it is banished to a cold, dark cell of isolation. In order to respond to violence, the church needs to create communities that restore and reconcile relationships, thus embodying peace.
This paper reports on an investigation of financial management practices used by small, medium-sized and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa. It was found that more than half the SMMEs examined ...use external accounting staff to prepare accounting reports and more than 60% rely on external accounting staff to interpret and use accounting information. A majority of the SMME owners were found to lack interpretation skills and an awareness of how to use information from financial statements. An implication of this study therefore is that policy makers, business support organizations, banks and academic institutions need to focus on educating SMMEs more effectively in financial management, thereby mitigating the risk of cash flow problems and business failure.
This article demonstrates Peter Martyr Vermigli's use of historical perspective in his exegesis in his opposition to Anabaptists, taking as a test case the subject of prophecy. By contrasting the ...material on prophecy found in Vermigli's Loci communeswith his handling of a number of key Pauline passages, the essay also seeks to make a point about our understanding of the man and his genius, namely, that one fails to obtain a full sense of the latter if one restricts oneself to the Loci communes. For while Vermigli's loci on prophecy contain mostly standard medieval fare, his expositions of Paul exhibit originality and ingenuity.

Mais, contrairement à leurs cousins émigrés aux États-Unis depuis le début du XIXe siècle, ils ont perdu toute visibilité sociale et se sont intégrés. Les archives publiques ne faisant plus état de la religion après 1850, il a fallu inventer d’autres méthodes pour décrire leur diffusion. Il s’agit notamment de l’utilisation des fichiers patronymiques de l’INSEE, des bases de données généalogiques et des listes de conscription.

Sixteenth-century Reformation Europe was a tumultuous time during which many defining ideas of the modern era were formulated. The technological advancement augured by the Gutenberg press allowed the ...unprecedented circulation of ideas among a growing legion of literate Europeans. The writings of radical reformer Martin Luther were perhaps most influential of all. His opposition to the universal Roman Catholic Church fundamentally challenged the elites and their institutions. Along the way, Luther was opposed by the Church, the political powers of the day, and competing religious ideologies. Ink Against the Devil distills the major impulses from these debates that continue to resonate to this day. This book will appeal to both lay and professional scholars of the Reformation and its major players with prose that is accessible and free of jargon. Loewen directly addresses the debates between Luther and his many foes, including Humanists like Erasmus and the sectarian opponents found among contemporary Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Of particular interest will be a focus on anti-semitism throughout Luther's published writings and sermons. There may be no other examples of this book's scope in such a natural, narrative presentation.

This piece reevaluates the events surrounding the 1528 execution of Anabaptist leader Balthasar Hubmaier by Ferdinand I of Austria in order to accurately assess Hubmaier's place in the development of ...early modern church-state relations. Rather than the commonly suggested motive of practicing rebaptism, the evidence indicates that Hubmaier was arrested and executed for his establishment in Waldshut and Nikolsburg of "free state churches," a unique sixteenth-century historical modality of believers' churches financially administered by local governments which protected dissenters, including Jews, from persecution. The first early modern advocate of freedom of thought, Hubmaier insisted that the obedience Christians owed to government was exclusively socio-political and not religious in nature, a redefinition which not merely affected the relationship between lay subjects and any given state but also extended to the relationship between lower and higher magistrates. Such developments threatened the ability of the Habsburg church-state amalgam to enforce obedience to the Catholic faith, prompting its charges of sedition against Hubmaier.

Students of political theology need a broad introduction to, and some understanding of how to distinguish between, varying approaches to the discipline. This article argues that differing approaches ...should be introduced in ways which emphasize the historical, theological, geographical, and ecclesial situatedness of their practitioners. Such introduction to the situatedness of various approaches should not pretend to be objective, but should be sympathetic. Those teaching political theology should also carefully incorporate their own situatedness, showing students how they are working within particular approaches themselves without reducing their teaching to advocacy for their own approaches. The proposal for teaching political theology argued here focuses on inviting students to become active practitioners of political theology, instead of mere consumers of information about the discipline.
The idea that the missional context in the West is a ‘post-Christendom’ context is increasingly seen as something not only to be acknowledged but celebrated. For several influential writers, ...Christian identity in the post-Christendom world is clarified when the church loses official power. This article examines how ‘post-Christendom’ thinking has evolved, looking at the influence of views drawn from the sixteenth-century Anabaptists, who rejected the Christendom model. The recovery of Anabaptist perspectives means more attention has been given to mission in pre-Christendom. The article then explores what the Free Church tradition offers when thinking about contemporary mission. While the Free Church view has been that church and state should be separate, the Free Church story includes many examples of mission that seeks to transform society. Finally, the article argues that the growth of non-Western Christianity suggests that Christian communities in non-Christendom settings can increase their influence – without state power.
