An insight formulated by Kierkegaard in 1838 and echoed by Sartre about one hundred years later signals the importance of this transformation: in order for novelistic characters to be compelling, the ...author should not appear to have decided their fate in advance but give readers a sense of their open freedom, in "a time resembling my own, one in which the future does not exist," Sartre recommends (p. 66). Ong identifies in these ideas an "existentialist poetics of the novel," and describes her project as follows: "The Art of Being aims to develop an account of the impact of the existentialists' discovery upon our understanding of the form of the novel and of the narrative strategies by which novels draw their readers into the fictional reality of the lives and worlds they represent" (p. 23). At stake here is the attention that Kierkegaard, Sartre, and Beauvoir direct toward "the fundamental question of what a novel is" (p. 37), a novel's ontology, and the ways formal features—plot, description, the representation of unfinished art works—disclose fundamental aspects of human existence. ...chapter 2 zooms in on Portrait of a Lady, which Ong places in a constellation of other nineteenth-century novels of marriage, in which a series of dialectical shifts are shown to generate narrative structure. Abstract
Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales have been popular among Chinese readers since they were introduced to China
through translation a century ago. This paper studies the translation of ...Andersen’s fairy tales in China by focusing on prominent
Chinese translators of Andersen and their landmark translations. Regarding translation as a social activity, the author attempts
to interpret the behaviour of the translator in terms of the historical context in which it occurred, as well as the corresponding
ideology of literature. It is argued that the language styles and translating strategies adopted by the translators of different
ages have varied according to the translator’s understanding of the original works, his purpose of translating, the publishers’
interests and the readers’ expectations in the target culture, as well as the image of Andersen constructed in the socio-cultural
context from which the translation emerged. Therefore, the translation practice, which has contributed to the canonization of
Andersen in China, is a process of the translators’ negotiations with the fluid Chinese poetics and ideology of the 20th
century.

King Leopold of Belgium was especially notorious for his merciless treatment of the Congolese, who were pressed into service on the rubber plantations. Lanters's discussion places the play within ...this historical and artistic setting with the European and American treatment of the Blacks as less than human including exhibiting some of them as freaks, natural oddities, and sub-humans or creatures on an evolutionary ladder leading to White perfection, while enslaving native populations to extract natural resources to fuel the "home" country's prosperity. The contemporary clinical psychologist Kay Redfield Jamison demonstrated the truth in Dryden's observation in important books using her clinical experience to evaluate several artists, poets, and musicians, including Touched with Tire (1993), An Unquiet Mind (1995), Night Tails Tast (1999), and most recently Robert Lowell: Setting the River on Tire (2017). Lowell being fully conscious "of its relevance . . . made it a creative force in his writing . . . as the duality of mania and discipline, insanity and sanity was the major organizing force of his life."

Martin McDonagh’s A Very Very Very Dark Matter (2018) explores how the stories of exploited people have been written out of history. The play includes several storytellers, and it both replicates and ...deviates from the details of numerous existing narratives, including McDonagh’s own plays. Set in 1857, the play imagines that Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales were written by a pygmy woman from the Belgian Congo who has traveled back in time; Hans calls her Marjory and keeps her in a box in his attic. Eventually Marjory writes herself out of the box and departs for Africa to prevent the colonization of her people. Dark Matter compels us to question the narratives about the past that have become embedded in our culture and to uncover the facts that official accounts have altered or suppressed; rewriting history is acceptable only in imaginative storytelling, as an act of poetic justice. The entremés, never represented in 1615, became a classic text and at the same time an object of revision, eventually turning into a hypotext for numerous authors who, at different times, turned ...their gaze to the cervantine text to provide their own version. In this paper, we will focus on analyzing the repercussion that El retablo de las maravillas had in Rafael Dieste and Lauro Olmo, two playwrights who recreated new and marvelous retablos from the cervantine piece and established an extremely interesting and fruitful network of intertextualities from multiple perspectives. The rewriting and updating of a classic text such as Cervantes' entremés also offers a great potential for the teaching of literature, aspect to which we devote a brief final reflection. In addition to the Spiegel best-seller lists, statistical analysis of the German book market from the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers & Booksellers Association) and ...published in Buch und Buchhandel in Zahlen are a main source for my analysis. The following analysis is based on Scandinavian books in German translation that have reached at least twentieth place on the Spiegel best-seller lists "Hardcover Belletristik" Hardcover Fiction, "Paperback Belletristik," and "Taschenbuch Belletristik" Paperback Fiction between 1993 and 2014.1 I have chosen 1993 as the starting point of my research period because it is the year Gaarder's Sophie's World appeared in German translation. Since 2009, Scandinavian literature is consistently represented by more than 350 translated titles per year, and it seems that the numbers are climbing. In 2011, the Frankfurt Book Fair featured Iceland and Icelandic literature as their so-called "Guest of Honor," with a substantial promotional program and translation fund provided by the Icelandic project team "Sagenhaftes Island" (Fabulous Iceland) and financial support of the Icelandic government.

The Eco-Imaginative Space of the Garden in Contemporary Children's Picture Books," Melissa Li Sheung Ying focuses on the importance of the garden as an educational space for children, arguing that it ...invites them into a greater environmental consciousness and, hopefully, activism. The aesthetic design of Children's Literature and Imaginative Geography is beautiful—a compliment worth noting about an edition concerned with space and materiality. Besides its physical appeal, Hudson's collection provides readers a variety of genres including the critical essay, interview, and narrative prose through which to explore imaginative geographies in children's literature. A particular strength of the collection is that the essays included are not just US-centric; the essays touch on works for young people written in the Northern Hemisphere, including Canada, Britain, the US, and Ireland. Because of the geographical diversity of the authors, the critical essays examine important topics in imaginative geographies, such as Indigenous sense of place, emigration from one's homeland to unfamiliar geographies, and a variety of topoi from the gardens of Britain to the coastline of Ireland.
