Two-and-a-half years ago, Apple Computer Inc. introduced its iPod digital music player, and it has been a hit with the consumers ever since. Apple has also been very successful with its iTunes online ...music store. But as CEO Steven P. Jobs knows all too well from his experience with the Mac, Apple can't rest on its laurels. In order to maintain its lead in the digital-music business, the company has to embrace the new ways consumers want to buy music, broaden its product line, address the nagging quality problems, and handle the competition.
Apple Computer's Appletalk cost-justifies installation of Laserwriter by Canon USA, Inc. Priced at $6,995, Laserwriter produces the attractive documents generated by Apple's Macintosh microcomputer. ...However, it does not support sharing among attached devices. Thus, until file transfer software, file-serving functions, and coupled workstation-to-host connections are offered, Appletalk is merely a means to share a costly peripheral. A fully configured network that includes a Laserwriter and 31 Macintoshes at the maximum distance of 1,000 feet costs more than $300 per connection. Plans for upgrades include a file server and a network interface that allows IBM Personal Computers (PC) to attach to Appletalk. Apple's current coexistence plan invites IBM PCs to replace Macintoshes in Appletalk. However, Apple is counting on Macintosh's user interface and powerful graphics to provide an edge. The key to Appletalk's acceptance as a PC network alternative depends on third-party developers, such as Novell Inc., Sytek Inc., and 3Com Corp.

Apple Computer Inc. (Cupertino, California) has announced the Macintosh Office, a Macintosh networking concept aimed at large corporate users. Apple will continue to rely on outside developers for ...software and is attempting to ally itself with vendors that are already strong in the office automation market in order to sell into large corporations. Products now available include LaserWriter (a $6,995 laser printer) and the AppleTalk network. Response to the Macintosh Office concept has indicated that Apple may have to consider a direct salesforce that provides maintenance and support in order to be accepted into the large corporate arena. Although the LaserWriter has been received enthusiastically by industry observers, opinions concerning the future of the AppleTalk network have been mixed.

Compugraphic Corp. (CG) chose to use Apple Computer's Lisa as the basis for a new typesetting product. The Lisa-based Personal Composition System for the office will offer CG typefaces and ...composition through an easy-to-use desktop computer. Lisa eliminated the need for a typesetter and cryptic codes to indicate the height and shape of letters by using a mouse instead. In the near future, CG will link Lisa to electronic printers that will enable users to typeset directly on plain copier paper without a printing press. CG already has an established base in the Fortune 1,000 companies, a market in which Apple wishes to expand. The 2 companies will exchange leads on potential customers. CG will support the Personal Composition System, including Lisa's software, with a national support hotline and diagnostics screen like the one used by CG typesetting customers.
Speaking at the recent American Marketing Association Business Marketing Conference, Michael Murray, former director of marketing for Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh division, reported that the ...Macintosh personal computer (PC) had to be introduced within a very narrow window of time. Moreover, failure of the computer would affect Apple's entire product line. The division decided to position the PC as an ''information appliance,'' and devised a marketing program to integrate communications in the overall marketing approach and to control the dialogue among Macintosh's key constituencies. The program began with radio and television spots to push the Macintosh name, then moved to a benefits approach to position Macintosh as easy to use. Apple also ensured that dealers, salespeople, and the industry press were introduced to the PC, as well as 7 specifically targeted universities. The company sold 72,000 Macintosh PCs during the first 100 days. However, lack of software has caused Apple trouble.
