The achievement of the right to vote for women in Italy was the result of long and difficult struggles propelled by women and men of great commitment, courage and determination, fighting for a cause ...they felt was just, even if they were well aware that their struggles and sacrifices might not have led to the hoped-for outcome. This essay focusses on extracts from texts and documents that mark key moments of the route towards the vote, moving from the mid-nineteenth century, before Unification, via the lively pro-suffrage activities of the early twentieth century, up until 1946. Among the extracts discussed are rare printed texts and maunscripts held in the Archivio storico dell'Unione Femminile Nazionale in Milan.
