Dark energy, the mysterious cause of the accelerating expansion of the universe, is one of the most important fields of research in astrophysics and cosmology today. Introducing the theoretical ...ideas, observational methods and results, this textbook is ideally suited to graduate courses on dark energy, and will also supplement advanced cosmology courses. Providing a thorough introduction to this exciting field, the textbook covers the cosmological constant, quintessence, k-essence, perfect fluid models, extra-dimensional models, and modified gravity. Observational research is reviewed, from the cosmic microwave background to baryon acoustic oscillations, weak lensing and cluster abundances. Every chapter ends with problems, with full solutions provided, and any calculations are worked through step-by-step.
The first three months of sky-survey operation with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope reveal 132 bright sources at |b| > 10 degrees with test statistic ...greater than 100 ( corresponding to about 10 sigma). Two methods, based on the CGRaBS, CRATES, and BZCat catalogs, indicate high-confidence associations of 106 of these sources with known active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This sample is referred to as the LAT Bright AGN Sample (LBAS). It contains two radio galaxies, namely, Centaurus A and NGC 1275, and 104 blazars consisting of 58 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), 42 BL Lac objects, and 4 blazars with unknown classification. Four new blazars were discovered on the basis of the LAT detections. Remarkably, the LBAS includes 10 high-energy-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), sources which were previously difficult to detect in the GeV range. Another 10 lower-confidence associations are found. Only 33 of the sources, plus two at |b| < 10 degrees, were previously detected with Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope( EGRET), probably due to variability. The analysis of the gamma-ray properties of the LBAS sources reveals that the average GeV spectra of BL Lac objects are significantly harder than the spectra of FSRQs. No significant correlation between radio and peak gamma-ray fluxes is observed. Blazar log N-log S distributions and luminosity functions are constructed to investigate the evolution of the different blazar classes, with positive evolution indicated for FSRQs but none for BL Lacs. The contribution of LAT blazars to the total extragalactic gamma-ray intensity is estimated.
Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are significant contributors to the metal enrichment of the interstellar medium. They have strong dust-driven winds that have their origin in regions close to the ...AGB star's surface, where dense dust clouds form. In this methods paper, we adapted models from advanced radiation-hydrodynamical (RHD) simulations as input for radiative transfer software to create synthetic observables. A major goal is to describe an AGB star's non-sphericity and to simulate its effects on the surrounding dusty envelope. We developed tools in Python to translate models of an AGB star and its dust-driven wind from 3D RHD simulations with into the format used for radiative transfer with . We preserved the asymmetric shape of the AGB star by including the star as a `dust species' and by using temperature data computed in The circumstellar silicate dust from the 3D RHD simulation is included using opacity data in with spatially dependent grain sizes. We compared images and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) created with of a model snapshot with similar output made with a spherically symmetric stellar atmosphere from the 1D program and with a point source star in Our model features substantial and clumpy dust formation just above 3.4\,au from the grid centre ($ 1\,R_ above the star), and large-scale structures due to giant convection cells are visible on the stellar surface. With the properties of VLTI as a basis, we have created simple synthetic observables where the dust clouds close to the star and features on the stellar surface are resolved. The flux density and the contrast to the star are high enough that optical interferometers, such as the VLTI, should be able to detect these dust clouds. We find that it is important to include asymmetric stellar models since their irregular shapes, radiation fields, and their dusty envelopes even put their marks on spatially unresolved observables and affect the flux levels and shapes of the SEDs. The effects on flux levels can mostly be linked to the clumpiness of the circumstellar dust. In contrast, the angle-dependent illumination resulting from temperature variations on the stellar surface causes shifts in the wavelengths of the flux maximum, as shown by replacing the asymmetric star with a spherical one. The methods presented here are an important step towards producing realistic synthetic observables and testing predictions of advanced 3D RHD models. With the model used here, we find that optical interferometers should be able to resolve thermal emission from dense clouds in the dust-formation zone close to an AGB star. Taking the angle-dependence of SEDs as a proxy for temporal variations in unresolved data, we conclude that not all variability observed in AGB stars should be interpreted as global changes in the sense of spherical models.

ABSTRACT
The ensemble of chemical element abundance measurements for stars, along with precision distances and orbit properties, provides high-dimensional data to study the evolution of the Milky ...Way. With this third data release of the Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey, we publish 678 423 spectra for 588 571 mostly nearby stars (81.2 per cent of stars are within <2 kpc), observed with the HERMES spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This release (hereafter GALAH+ DR3) includes all observations from GALAH Phase 1 (bright, main, and faint survey, 70 per cent), K2-HERMES (17 per cent), TESS-HERMES (5 per cent), and a subset of ancillary observations (8 per cent) including the bulge and >75 stellar clusters. We derive stellar parameters Teff, log g, Fe/H, vmic, vbroad, and vrad using our modified version of the spectrum synthesis code Spectroscopy Made Easy (sme) and 1D marcs model atmospheres. We break spectroscopic degeneracies in our spectrum analysis with astrometry from Gaia DR2 and photometry from 2MASS. We report abundance ratios X/Fe for 30 different elements (11 of which are based on non-LTE computations) covering five nucleosynthetic pathways. We describe validations for accuracy and precision, flagging of peculiar stars/measurements and recommendations for using our results. Our catalogue comprises 65 per cent dwarfs, 34 per cent giants, and 1 per cent other/unclassified stars. Based on unflagged chemical composition and age, we find 62 per cent young low-$\alpha$, 9 per cent young high-$\alpha$, 27 per cent old high-$\alpha$, and 2 per cent stars with Fe/H ≤ −1. Based on kinematics, 4 per cent are halo stars. Several Value-Added-Catalogues, including stellar ages and dynamics, updated after Gaia eDR3, accompany this release and allow chrono-chemodynamic analyses, as we showcase.

Telescope (LAT), the primary science instrument on the
Fermi Gamma-ray
Space Telescope (Fermi)
, during the ...first 11 months of the science
phase of the mission, which began on 2008 August 4. The First
Fermi
-LAT catalog (1FGL) contains 1451 sources detected and
characterized in the 100 MeV to 100 GeV range. Source detection was based on the
average flux over the 11 month period, and the threshold likelihood Test
Statistic is 25, corresponding to a significance of just over 4σ. The 1FGL
catalog includes source location regions, defined in terms of elliptical fits to
the 95% confidence regions and power-law spectral fits as well as flux
measurements in five energy bands for each source. In addition, monthly light
curves are provided. Using a protocol defined before launch we have tested for
several populations of gamma-ray sources among the sources in the catalog. For
individual LAT-detected sources we provide firm identifications or plausible
associations with sources in other astronomical catalogs. Identifications are
based on correlated variability with counterparts at other wavelengths, or on
spin or orbital periodicity. For the catalogs and association criteria that we
have selected, 630 of the sources are unassociated. Care was taken to
characterize the sensitivity of the results to the model of interstellar diffuse
gamma-ray emission used to model the bright foreground, with the result that 161
sources at low Galactic latitudes and toward bright local interstellar clouds
are flagged as having properties that are strongly dependent on the model or as
potentially being due to incorrectly modeled structure in the Galactic diffuse
emission.

Gaia
satellite ...during the first 34 months of its operational phase.
Aims.
We describe the input data, the models, and the processing used for the astrometric content of
Gaia
EDR3, as well as the validation of these results performed within the astrometry task.
Methods.
The processing broadly followed the same procedures as for
Gaia
DR2, but with significant improvements to the modelling of observations. For the first time in the
Gaia
data processing, colour-dependent calibrations of the line- and point-spread functions have been used for sources with well-determined colours from DR2. In the astrometric processing these sources obtained five-parameter solutions, whereas other sources were processed using a special calibration that allowed a pseudocolour to be estimated as the sixth astrometric parameter. Compared with DR2, the astrometric calibration models have been extended, and the spin-related distortion model includes a self-consistent determination of basic-angle variations, improving the global parallax zero point.
Results. Gaia
EDR3 gives full astrometric data (positions at epoch J2016.0, parallaxes, and proper motions) for 1.468 billion sources (585 millionwith five-parameter solutions, 882 million with six parameters), and mean positions at J2016.0 for an additional 344 million.Solutions with five parameters are generally more accurate than six-parameter solutions, and are available for 93% of the sources brighter than the 17th magnitude. The median uncertainty in parallax and annual proper motion is 0.02–0.03 mas at magnitude
G
= 9–14, and around 0.5 mas at
G
= 20. Extensive characterisation of the statistical properties of the solutions is provided, including the estimated angular power spectrum of parallax bias from the quasars.

EDR3) gives trigonometric parallaxes for nearly 1.5 billion sources. Inspection of the EDR3 data for sources identified as quasars reveals that their ...parallaxes are biased, that is, they are systematically offset from the expected distribution around zero, by a few tens of microarcseconds.
Aims.
We attempt to map the main dependences of the parallax bias in EDR3. In principle, this could provide a recipe for correcting the EDR3 parallaxes.
Methods.
Quasars provide the most direct way for estimating the parallax bias for faint sources. In order to extend this to brighter sources and a broader range of colours, we used differential methods based on physical pairs (binaries) and sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The functional forms of the dependences were explored by mapping the systematic differences between EDR3 and DR2 parallaxes.
Results.
The parallax bias is found to depend in a non-trivial way on (at least) the magnitude, colour, and ecliptic latitude of the source. Different dependences apply to the five- and six-parameter solutions in EDR3. While it is not possible to derive a definitive recipe for the parallax correction, we give tentative expressions to be used at the researcher’s discretion and point out some possible paths towards future improvements.
ABSTRACT
The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is currently being pursued using multiple techniques and in different wavelength bands. Dyson spheres, megastructures that could be constructed ...by advanced civilizations to harness the radiation energy of their host stars, represent a potential technosignature, that in principle may be hiding in public data already collected as part of large astronomical surveys. In this study, we present a comprehensive search for partial Dyson spheres by analysing optical and infrared observations from Gaia, 2MASS, and WISE. We develop a pipeline that employs multiple filters to identify potential candidates and reject interlopers in a sample of five million objects, which incorporates a convolutional neural network to help identify confusion in WISE data. Finally, the pipeline identifies seven candidates deserving of further analysis. All of these objects are M-dwarfs, for which astrophysical phenomena cannot easily account for the observed infrared excess emission.
This book accompanies another book by the same authors, Introduction to the Theory of the Early Universe: Hot Big Bang Theory and presents the theory of the evolution of density perturbations and ...relic gravity waves, theory of cosmological inflation and post-inflationary reheating. Written in a pedagogical style, the main chapters give a detailed account of the established theory, with derivation of formulas. Being self-contained, it is a useful textbook for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students. Essential materials from General Relativity, theory of Gaussian random fields and quantum field theory are collected in the appendices. The more advanced topics are approached similarly in a pedagogical way. These parts may serve as a detailed introduction to current research.
