Foraminifera, Algae and Pseudo-Algae from the Visean of Oulmes area (Morocco).
In the Oulmes area (Morocco) the Visean beds have yielded some particularly rich assemblages of the first and fourth zones of Moroccan Foraminifera, corresponding to the Belgian V2a/b and V3bα. The components are accurately enumerated. Geological consequences of these datings are given.
Influence of the Paleozoic paleogeography on Hercynian deformations in the Northwestern Meseta of Morocco.
The paleozoic northwestern Meseta is a segment of the hercynian belt in Morocco. Lithostratigraphic and structural studies allow paleo-geographic reconstruction of the Paleozoic basins. That is a deter¬ minant factor for understanding the hercynian tectonic evolution of this region, because of a strong influence of inherited structure during the Hercynian deformation. The Northwestern Meseta is subdivided into two domains which exhibit very different sedimentational and deformational styles :
- the Coastal Block was characterised in cambrian times by the opening of an intracontinental rift with strong subsidence. II was structured during the Hercynian into large "en echelon" folds related to a dextral sense of shearing along submeridian inherited faults ;
- the Central Meseta was a shoal during cambrian times and then became a flexural basin during upper devonian-carboniferous times, characterized by an important extensional tectonic style. The margin of the basin consist in tilted blocks with an intense alcaline volcanic activity. Folded hercynian structures are controlled by preexisting faults trending N20-30 and N70.
Those two domains are separated by the Western Mesetian Shear Zone (Z.C.M.O.) made of several "en echelon" shear zones where intense deformation and high grade metamorphism took place. This zone which corresponds to the eastern limit of the cambrian basin and to the western limit of the devono-carboniferous basin was emplaced upon an uplift of the Precambrian basement. In the central part of the Rehamna Massif, this shear zone is gently deeping eastward, probably because it was inherited from the extensive Carboniferous tectonics.
The carboniferous basins of the moroccan Meseta, the sedimentary proofs and the approach of the tectonic setting. Tectonics versus eustacy.
The distribution of the carboniferous sedimentary basins, the nature of their filling, the curves of the cumulative thickness of the sediments in relation to the time and the curves of the tectonic and thermal subsidence allow to test the geotectonic models propounded for the moroccan Meseta and to compare the Morocco with the Europe. The curves of the tectonic and thermal subsidence are polyphase with a sharp slope with or without a decreasing of the subvidence. They are inside the domain of the strike slip basins (Mc CABE, 1991) with or without a thermal relaxation. At the N and S of the eastern Meseta, during the collision, these basins become foreland basins with gliding nappes, consequently they are composite basins. These basins are filled by continental or marine deposits that depend on the tectonics and the eustacy. The upper Visean is a period of the maximum transgression on the Meseta. During the Namurian and the Westphalian, the sea recedes to the East near the Mesogée. We watch the global eustatic events in the moroccan Meseta during the Carboniferous.
— Neogene Karst of Akhsass Table-land (N. 29° 25' - W. 9° 45') was formed on a planation surface cutting accross a complex geomorphic compression structure. Karst processing was directed by tectonic ...features and the pattern of fractures. Mega-structures divide the table-land in four units. Middle sized structures gave the direction of the surface shapes and underground karst. Exceptional ability of limestones and dolomites to karstic evolution is due to micro-structures. Quaternary up-lift of the table-land and a climatic change for drier conditions resulted in the selection of surface and underground drains related with the main fractures pattern.
