In 'Irregular Migrants in Belgium and the Netherlands', Masja van Meeteren studies the different ways in which irregular migrants live in Belgium and the Netherlands. The book offers an empirically ...grounded theoretical critique of the dominant research practice that focuses on 'survival strategies', relies on comparisons of migrant communities and overemphasizes structural explanations. Instead, Irregular Migrants takes irregular migrants´ aspirations as a starting point of analysis. Based on this innovative research approach, key questions are answered regarding the lives of irregular migrants. How can we understand their patterns of economic and social incorporation, the transnational activities they engage in, and the significance of different forms of capital? Drawing on intensive participant observation, as well as more than two hundred in-depth interviews with irregular migrants and representatives of organizations that are involved with them, Irregular Migrants develops much-needed contextualized insights. In de loop van de negentiende eeuw komt ‘rechts Vlaanderen’ tegenover ‘links Wallonië’ te staan. Bij elke parlementsverkiezing bleek (en blijkt) het Vlaamse kiesgedrag af te wijken van het Waalse. ...Hoe is het ontstaan van rechts Vlaanderen te verklaren? Historici hebben het Vlaamse kiesgedrag vaak geïnterpreteerd als de politieke vertaling van de economische en culturele ‘achterlijkheid’ van ‘arm Vlaanderen’: de Vlaamse samenleving was traditioneel en de kiezers stemden er dus traditioneel. Anderen hebben aangevoerd dat de katholieke partij beter inspeelde op de Vlaamse verzuchtingen en dat de Vlaamse kiezers gewoon ‘rationeel’ handelden door rechts te stemmen. In dit boek onderzoekt Henk de Smaele beide theses kritisch. Hij komt tot de vaststelling dat geen van beide volstaat om de vorming van rechts Vlaanderen te verklaren. Om het fenomeen beter te begrijpen, moet men niet alleen aandacht hebben voor ‘tradities’ en ‘belangen’, maar ook voor ‘affecten’. Contributors discuss the diplomacy of the principle countries that signed the Treaty of Locarno in 1925 and consider the issues of greatest importance to the study of European history in the 1920s. They also assess whether the treaty could be seen as the 'real' peace treaty with Germany at the end of the First World War. Key chapters include: Locarno, Britain and the Security of Europe; Locarno: Early Test of Fascist Intentions; Locarno and the Irrelevance of Disarmament. 'Locarno diplomacy' meant different things to each of the countries involved. The inability of contemporaries to arrive at a working consensus about what the treaty was intended to achieve weakened it and paved the way for its destruction. Unlike the Paris Peace Conference, however, the Treaty of Locarno and the era of diplomacy to which it gave its name, were not always seen as flawed. Op het einde van de negentiende eeuw barstte de sociale kwestie in alle hevigheid los. De katholieke regeringen moesten nu wel wetgevende maatregelen nemen. Hoewel de technische inhoud van de wetten ...genoegzaam bekend is, geldt dat veel minder voor de onderliggende ideeën en argumentaties in de sociaal-politieke debatten. Dit boek behandelt daarom de politieke en wetenschappelijke theorievorming over de sociale wetgeving in België rond 1900. Het wil illustreren dat sociaal beleid veel meer betekende dan een droog technisch antwoord op louter praktische uitdagingen. Ook sociaal-politieke filosofie en politieke cultuur speelden een rol bij het tot stand komen van sociale wetten.
De politieke cultuur van de volle negentiende eeuw had, op sociaal-economisch vlak, gedweept met het principe van de 'vrijheid van arbeid'. Voor de arbeiders op de werkvloer echter - zo luidde althans de kritiek - betekende die vrijheid van arbeid vaak een vergiftigd geschenk, ... geen echte vrijheid, maar veeleer een geketende gevangenschap. Dat kwam door de veeleer atomistische aspiratie van de politiek. Rond 1900 veranderde dat. Voortaan zou het politieke debat worden uitgedaagd door wat de auteur noemt een 'holistische bekoring'.
Het is die verschuiving in de politieke cultuur die het boek nauwgezet bestudeert. Het biedt een schets van een even boeiende als kronkelende weg, de grillige weg die werd afgelegd van een individualistische 'vrijheid van arbeid' naar 'georganiseerde en gesubsidieerde vrijheid'.
