Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the position of women in the advertising industry with the lens of organisational theory and Bourdieuian concept of habitus, to explore whether women ...are expected to embrace masculine characteristics to succeed and whether advertising industry can be seen as a masculine habitus.
Design/methodology/approach
Qualitative interviews were conducted with 37 women working in the advertising industry in England. The data was analysed using thematic analysis.
Findings
Women report masculine expectations as a condition to succeed in their careers and show large internalisation of masculine habitus. While women recognise that the position of men is better, they do not report challenging organisational structures that enforce masculine expectations of them, and they generally report having to communicate and behave like men to succeed. Women in the north show more work satisfaction and report less sexism and career barriers.
Practical implications
Employers wishing to present their brand as inclusive should consider the impact of organisational structure and design internal policies that promote inclusivity.
Social implications
Advertising industry has a mass reach, similar to one of the media, and reshaping organisational structure to foster inclusivity would enable more supportive and less stereotypical campaigns. Class origin and early socialisation influence communication and behaviour in adulthood, which influences career opportunities.
Originality/value
To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study addressing blokishness and masculine habitus in the context of the advertising industry in England. Besides, the study identified a regional divide in work experiences, which are linked to early socialisation.
This article analyzes debates on sugar and the supermarket industry in the British national press in the 2010-2015 period. This article’s primary premise is that traditionally “female” subject areas ...of journalism (health, supermarkets) migrated from “soft” news sections to “hard” news pages of newspapers and, when this happened, women journalists were squeezed out of covering these issues; instead, most topics on hard news pages become the preserve of male journalists.
In 1918, Aussie: the Australian Soldiers' Magazine, a trench newspaper produced on the Western Front, commented that concert parties were 'something more than a luxury-they are a necessity' (Aussie 8 ...March 1918: 4). For soldiers of the British, American, and Dominion armies, live entertainment, most typically concert parties, was an integral part of their experiences of the First World War. Yet we know very little about what these experiences were, or what entertainment meant to soldiers. This article examines the experience of live entertainment for Australian soldiers in the First World War. Firstly, it explores entertainment organized for the first AIF, focusing on the soldier concert party. Secondly, it attempts to ascertain some of the responses of soldier-audiences to this entertainment by looking at evidence left by members of those audiences such as that recorded in letters and diaries. It also examines soldier-entertainment and audience experiences in order to reveal something about soldiers' interaction with popular culture, as well as the trench culture shared by soldiers.

Im Werk des bedeutenden russischen Symbolisten Aleksandr Aleksanrovič Blok (1880 - 1921) ist der lyrische Zyklus die zentrale, am häufigsten angewendete Ausdrucksform, wenn man vom einzelnen Gedicht ...absieht. Die ersten drei Kapitel der vorliegenden Arbeit sind der Struktur des Genres, der Untersuchungsmethode und dem Problem der Edition der Zyklen Bloks gewidmet. Im vierten Kapitel wird die Anwendung der Untersuchungsmethode bei der Analyse von drei unterschiedlichen Zyklen Bloks dargestellt, wobei den am häufigsten behandelten Zyklen, 'Stichi o Prekrasnoj Dame' und 'Snežnaja maska' ein eigenes Kapitel gewidmet wird, da die beiden Zyklen häufig als Vergleichstexte herangezogen werden. Im letzten Abschnitt der Arbeit wird der Einfluß der Genrekonzeptionen von Heinrich Heine, Apollon Grigor'ev und Valerij Brjuzov auf den Zyklus bei Blok analysiert.

Aleksandr Aleksandrovitch Blok, poeta simbolista russo da Era de Prata, manifestou em prosa, num artigo publicado no jornal “Retch”, em 7 de dezembro de 1908, sua opinião negativa a respeito da ...ironia com que a intelectualidade da época tratava tudo a seu redor, e que inundava as respectivas obras. Reação natural das almas sensíveis a um século aterrorizante como o Século XIX, segundo Blok, essa mesma ironia, exacerbada, levava à insensibilidade, embotando a capacidade de discernir entre bem e mal, e desacreditando o próprio piadista, cujo pedido de socorro não era captado pelos demais, iludidos pelo riso compulsivo com que ele disfarçava o desespero. Chamando essa condição de “doença contagiosa”, e reconhecendo-se, ele mesmo, vítima de tal epidemia desumanizadora, Blok encontra a causa da “doença” no individualismo e no apego secreto dos escritores aos objetos de suas sátiras, e aponta a renúncia ao próprio egoísmo como única cura viável.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden, was die quantitativen Untersuchungen angeht, die drei von Blok autorisierten Bücher sowie die Poeme "Dvenadcat" und "Skify" berücksichtigt (I, 3-323; II, 7-307; ...III, 7-290, 347-362), um - bei der annährend gleichen Seitenzahl der drei Bücher - möglichst genaue Vergleiche über Häufigkeit und Entwicklung durchführen zu können.
Zusammenfassung
Im Schaffen des russischen Symbolisten Andrej Belyj (1880–1934) nimmt die Frage nach dem Wesen von Persönlichkeit ličnost’ zeit seines Lebens einen wichtigen Raum ein und ist sowohl ...in seinen literarischen wie philosophisch-theoretischen Schriften entwickelt. Wenngleich Belyj keinen Text verfasst hat, der sich diesem Begriff eigens widmet, können dennoch aus seinem Werk Grundzüge einer Theorie der Persönlichkeit genetisch rekonstruiert werden. Anders sieht dies im Fall von Aleksandr Blok (1880–1921) aus, der verhältnismäßig wenige Arbeiten mit theoretischem Charakter hinterlassen hat. Auch wird in ihnen die Problematik des Persönlichkeitsbegriffs kaum berührt und nicht philosophisch vertieft. Dennoch können vereinzelte Elemente eines Persönlichkeitsbegriffs für Blok aufgezeigt werden.
