During late Middle Ages the space corresponding to Papal State showed some features similar to those of Central-Northern Italy, sharing others with the Southern Kingdom. This interesting mix can be ...tested observing statutory law, that, regarding this period, has abundantly survived, although revealing remarkable regional differences. The interplay between cities and villages in this situation is complicated by Papal power, which participates in that relationship, affecting it with a varying intensity and continuity. In this book we try to specify the “three parts game” that happened during the legislative process, considering also other players action, such rural lords. The work includes four essays about the four lands forming the Papal State and other three about nearer lands, i.e. Florentine Tuscany, Siennese one and the Sicilian Kingdom (reserving a special attention at Abruzzo), and suggests useful comparisons, one of the project paramount aims. The scholars invited to join the enterprise, each specialist of a single land, during their research considered other’s results, notwithstanding the physical distance among each other. Thus, we try to offer a homogeneous picture, at least regarding powers interplay dynamics.
How does a narrator use that scenic, articulate and composite material that we call ‘city’? To give an example, how and to what purpose is Carlo Emilio Gadda’s page – stylistically brimful, and ...apparently scarcely narrative – named after a city (Milano)? Based on similar questions, this article explores L’Adalgisa. Disegni milanesi, a peculiar textual product that is located between two typical containers of narrative forms. Without being a novel, indeed, L’Adalgisa is no longer a collection of short stories.
Villa Nani Mocenigo in Canda represents one of the most important works of architecture of the alto-Polesine, but, at the same time, one of the least noted historiographically. The villa, in the ...centre of a large complex comprising a park and service buildings, is distinguished by its exceptional position along the banks of the Canalbianco and by its architecture. From the earliest studies carried out, two important construction phased have come to light: the first, performed in the second half of sixteenth century, and a later expansion, contemporary with the new southern façade, whose features suggest a later period of construction dating to the eighteenth century. Such assessments, pervasively accepted in the subsequent literature, are not fully consistent with the significantly more numerous transformations evidenced by direct analysis. The result of the research presented here aim to offer an historical-critical reading through the vital constant comparison between indirect sources and the direct analysis of the building in its several components. The comprehensive reinterpretation of the construction and transformation phases has widened the field of this research into contextualising historical events, the family who were proprietors, and the craftsmen who laboured there. The result, partly heretofore unpublished, allow the villa to be placed in a wider architectural and historical context than is traditionally presented.
This essay seeks to trace and investigate ecologically inflected concepts in Jeanette Winterson’s
. The general tendency in ecological and ecocritical analyses has long been a selective focus on how ...nature is represented in literary texts; however, the ecological crisis, globalization, and technological factors that drive environmental degradation are all tethered at the root to preliminary concepts relating to human behaviours, beliefs, values, and expectations. This essay maintains that the diagnoses should begin at the level of culture since it is at that level that ecological problems begin to germinate. Through a discussion that draws on Federico Campagna’s
, this essay performs a thematic reading of
. Using Campagna’s elucidation of the metaphysical assumptions that inform environmentally destructive practices, it argues that
draws attention to these assumptions and identifies in them an obstacle to raising ecological awareness. Additionally, by employing an approach that draws on ecocritical scholarship, this essay discusses how formal and linguistic experimentation in
inscribes ecological viewpoints and attempts the mission of redress that could benefit a more ecologically attuned future.
This article investigates the patterns of Europeanization of the Italian public sphere during the 2019 European Elections campaign. Europeanization is meant as a multifaceted process. The visibility ...and salience of the European Union (E.U.) within the public debate is realized by dynamics involving different actors, in terms of interactions, connections and contaminations between different public spheres. The aim of the article is to clarify whether and to what extent the Italian media covered the E.U. during the European Parliament (E.P.) elections campaign and more precisely to assess through which dynamics of Europeanization the E.U. entered the domestic public debate. We relied on data from a human content analysis carried out on 10 Italian media outlets during the seven weeks before election day. Our findings suggest that, compared to 2014, the visibility of E.U. and E.U. related issues is increasing within Italian media coverage. Italian media still maintain a neutral approach to the issue, resisting to Eurosceptic claims from political parties and public opinion. With regard to the Europeanization, we found that media tend to focus on the vertical dimension especially, providing visibility to domestic actors addressing the E.U. and its political actors. Elements of horizontal Europeanization, instead, are mainly referred to events from other E.U. member states, with few connections among political actors. All in all, our results confirm the idea of a growing centrality of the E.U. within national public debate combined with signals of more structured and substantial Europeanization.
This paper quantified the impact of urban expansion on landscape characteristics of a famous landscape icon, the Roman Campagna, during the last thirty years. Landscape composition and structure were ...assessed between 1974, when the distinguishing features of Roman Campagna are still widespread and 2008, after the trajectory of urban decentralisation and urban sprawl. Changes in landscape structure were explored by spatial pattern analysis to detect how structural changes in landscape components can modify both land structure and landscape image. Non-parametric correlation statistics and multi factor analysis showed that the distinctive features of the Roman Campagna landscape are now blurred. A generalized landscape mixitè was generated by the juxtaposition of different fragmented land uses, as showed by a negative relationship between changes in surface area and patchiness found in almost all other land use classes. Adaptation measures for preserving peri-urban agriculture in a landscape changed in structure and image are finally discussed.
