Christians today do not accurately reflect the character of God, whom they are told is living, a light in the darkness, and a well-spring of eternal love. People are confused and disturbed about ...Bible passages, historical events, and personal experiences that seem to belie these very traits. These questions were explored with several experienced pastors during a year of upheaval and confusion. Understanding the true character of God is important in serving God and demonstrating God’s grace to everyone. God gives life, provides light through dark times, cherishes each individual with steadfast love that endures forever. A loving relationship with God provides the abundant life Christ promises, and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, this relationship and understanding leads to sound decisions and actions based on faith.

This thesis engages in a new methodology to create collaborative, imaginative work around the idea of settlement on Mars. By parodying and restructuring the design process, using poetry as a tool and science fiction as an identity, this work intends to inject different perspectives into this exciting opportunity as it approaches reality, maintaining that design is improved when vision is replaced by conversation.

These themes are explored through dichotomies that crack the lens of the human perception and sense of self. This is achieved through examining inner and outer worlds, both visually and psychologically, between light and darkness, set among solitude within the home or in isolation among the streets—examining the spectrum of human emotions, and how one’s internal weather is translated through different landscapes of time that evoke the happiness or suffering of the human mind.
Véhicule Press is a small book publishing company in Montreal that specializes in poetry, fiction, and social history and publishes in the English-language. Directed by Simon Dardick and Nancy ...Marrelli, the Press celebrated its forty-fifth-year anniversary in 2018. Drawing on data collected from the Véhicule Press and Véhicule Art (Montreal) Inc. fonds stored in the Concordia University Library Special Collections, this thesis explores the first twenty years (1973–1993) of Véhicule Press and follows the evolution of the company from a commercial printing operation in the back room of a gallery, Véhicule Art Inc., to a book publisher that has contributed greatly to the communities of Montreal. The thesis argues that, through the publication of poetry, artist books, and books on the history of Montreal and Quebec, a continual policy of inclusivity and diversity, and a gradually expanding outreach, Véhicule Press has sought to educate the world about the unique and diverse histories and peoples of Montreal and Quebec. The thesis also acknowledges the impact that funding, especially from the Canada Council for the Arts, has had on the publishing house over the years, as well as various other events that helped shape the press into the company that it is today.

Lying on his couch, reflecting on his life, Moses E. Herzog “thought awhile of Mithridates, whose system learned to thrive on poison. He cheated his assassins, who made the mistake of using small ...doses, and was pickled, not destroyed. Tutto fa brodo”(Bellow 4). Saul Bellow’s titular character offers an excellent metaphor for a complicated figure: the schlemiel. Herzog reflects on Mithridate’s inability to die with honor: having fortified himself against poisoning, he botches his suicide. The Italian phrase Bellow uses to describe Herzog’s state of mind is an idiom meaning literally “everything makes broth” suggesting that every little bit helps. In Herzog it is used ironically: every little bit helps self-sabotage; everything that helps is also everything that hurts. A schlemiel’s best efforts will inevitably come to foolishness. handwringers is a collection of short stories which revolve around Jewish identity and the figure of the schlemiel. The critical introduction, “‘Everyday’ Scraps and the Metacomedic Schlemiels of handwringers, ” looks at the form of the stories, the genre of metacomedy in relation to the form, and the schlemiel of the collection as a metacomedic character. The stories are short, ranging from 17 to 2020 words. The length of the stories contributes to the theme of mediation, evoking something of a chaotic media experience of clips, soundbites, advertisements, shows, film, and the internet. Moments of epiphany and/or crisis unfold within these short forms. Collectively, these moments suggest a fragmented sense of self, one assembled through bits of cultural information gleaned from various media. Throughout the critical introduction, examples from both my work and the creative and theoretical work of others are used in order to clarify abstract ideas as well as to suggest a matrix of influence. Ultimately, in this collection, Jewishness as understood through pop-culture is manifested in a kind of anxiety around identity, authenticity, religion, and culture.
