The thesis is an exposition of Yves Congar's developing understanding of faith and history and the relationships between them. In Congar's writings faith (the acceptance of God's offer of friendship ...and the way of life within history which proceeds from that) and history (a linked series of events through which the goals of human existence are accomplished) are connected in a variety of ways. Congar saw historical events, interpreted by the prophets and apostles of the Bible, as revelatory. Hence he regarded faith as arising, at least in part, from history. Congar also maintained that historical context influences how a person responds to the revelation conveyed through history. Furthermore, it affects the forms taken by the various embodiments of the life of faith to which the acceptance of revelation gives rise. In addition, the new situations and perspectives which lived history produces can occasion a deepening of faith and growth in a person's understanding of the meaning of what is revealed. The study of history, Congar thought, contributes to the process of discerning what, in any given form in which faith is expressed, belongs to the essentials of the life of faith and what is open to change. The thesis shows that Congar's views about faith, history and their inter-connections remained substantially the same over the course of his lengthy theological career, but that his sense of the impact of historicity upon human persons and their ways of expressing their faith became more profound. The implications of this "approfondissement" for some of the theological questions treated by Congar are noted. Questions are raised about some elements of his theological method, in particular the criteria employed to distinguish authentic revelatory experiences and theological developments from others.
