Imperial Boundaries is a study of imperial expansion and local transformation on Russia's Don Steppe frontier during the age of Peter the Great. Brian Boeck connects the rivalry of the Russian and ...Ottoman empires in the northern Black Sea basin to the social history of the Don Cossacks, who were transformed from an open, democratic, multiethnic, male fraternity dedicated to frontier raiding into a closed, ethnic community devoted to defending and advancing the boundaries of the Russian state. He shows how by promoting border patrol, migration control, bureaucratic regulation of cross-border contacts and deportation of dissidents, Peter I destroyed the world of the old steppe and created a new imperial Cossack order in its place. In examining this transformation, Imperial Boundaries addresses key historical issues of imperial expansion, the delegitimization of non-state violence, the construction of borders, and the encroaching boundaries of state authority in the lives of local communities.
The Original Portrayal of Mozart’s Don Giovanni offers an original reading of Mozart’s and Da Ponte’s opera Don Giovanni, using as a lens the portrayal of the title role by its creator, the baritone ...Luigi Bassi (1766–1825). Although Bassi was coached in the role by the composer himself, his portrayal has never been studied in depth before, and this book presents a large number of new sources (first- and second-hand accounts), which allows us to reconstruct his performance scene by scene. The book confronts Bassi’s portrayal with a study of the opera’s early German reception and performance history, demonstrating how Don Giovanni as we know it today was not only created by Mozart, Da Ponte and Luigi Bassi but also by the early German adapters, translators, critics and performers who turned the title character into the arrogant and violent villain we still encounter in most of today’s stage productions. Incorporating discussion of dramaturgical thinking of the late Enlightenment and the difficult moral problems that the opera raises, this is an important study for scholars and researchers from opera studies, theatre and performance studies, music history as well as conductors, directors and singers.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the most common mycotoxins found in cereal grains and grains contaminated with DON can cause health issues for both humans and animals and result in severe economic ...losses. Currently there is no feasible method to remediate affected grains. The development of a biological method for detoxification is becoming increasingly more plausible with the discovery of microbes which can transform DON to a relatively non-toxic stereoisomer, 3-
-DON. Although bacteria capable of detoxifying DON have been known for some time, it is only recently an enzyme responsible was identified. In
17-2-E-8 (
sp. 17-2-E-8) a two-step DON epimerization (Dep) pathway, designated as the Dep system, completes this reaction. DepA was recently identified as the enzyme responsible for the conversion of DON to 3-keto-DON, and in this report, DepB, a NADPH dependent dehydrogenase, is identified as the second and final step in the pathway. DepB readily catalyzes the reduction of 3-keto-DON to 3-
-DON. DepB is shown to be moderately thermostable as it did not lose significant activity after a heat treatment at 55°C and it is amenable to lyophilization. DepB functions at a range of pH-values (5-9) and functions equally well in multiple common buffers. DepB is clearly a NADPH dependent enzyme as it utilizes it much more efficiently than NADH. The discovery of the final step in the Dep pathway may provide a means to finally mitigate the losses from DON contamination in cereal grains through an enzymatic detoxification system. The further development of this system will need to focus on the activity of the Dep enzymes under conditions mimicking industrially relevant conditions to test their functionality for use in areas such as corn milling, fuel ethanol fermentation or directly in animal feed.
Don DeLillo is an author who pays special attention to language, time, and space when constructing characters' identity as well as their milieu. Considering this aspect of his fiction, the present ...article looks at how cinematic adaptations of his novels translate time, space, and the use of language onto the screen. Two of DeLillo's novels have been adapted so far: Cosmopolis (DeLillo 2003) by David Cronenberg in a 2012 movie of the same name, and The Body Artist (DeLillo 2001) by Benoît Jacquot under the title Ã? Jamais (2016). In light of the importance that the aforementioned elements play in the author's works, this article delves into how they are represented in the two adaptations and analyzes the role that they play in the movies compared to the novels. Since the earliest development of states, groups of people escaped or were exiled. As capitalism developed, people tried to escape capitalist constraints connected with state control. This powerful ...book gives voice to three communities living at the edges of capitalism: Cossacks on the Don River in Russia; Zapatistas in Chiapas, Mexico; and prisoners in long-term isolation since the 1970s. Inspired by their experiences visiting Cossacks, living with the Zapatistas, and developing connections and relationships with prisoners and ex-prisoners, Andrej Grubacic and Denis O’Hearn present a uniquely sweeping, historical, and systematic study of exilic communities engaged in mutual aid. Following the tradition of Peter Kropotkin, Pierre Clastres, James Scott, Fernand Braudel and Imanuel Wallerstein, this study examines the full historical and contemporary possibilities for establishing self-governing communities at the edges of the capitalist world-system, considering the historical forces that often militate against those who try to practice mutual aid in the face of state power and capitalist incursion.
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a common mycotoxin in food that mainly pollutes grain crops and feeds, such as barley, wheat and corn. DON has caused widespread concern in the field of food and feed safety. ...In this study, a colorimetric immunoassay was proposed based on the aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) due to the decomposition of Mn2+ from gold-coated manganese dioxide (AuNP@MnO2) nanosheets. In this study, 2-(dihydrogen phosphate)-l-ascorbic acid (AAP) was hydrolyzed by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and converted to ascorbic acid (AA). Then, AuNP@MnO2 was reduced to Mn2+ and AuNPs aggregation occurred. Using the unique optical characteristics of AuNPs and AuNP@MnO2, visible color changes realized simple detection of DON with high sensitivity and portability. With increasing DON content, the color changed more obviously. To quantitatively detect DON, pictures can be taken and the blue value can be read by a smartphone. The detection limit (Ic10) of this method was 0.098 ng mL−1, which was 326 times higher than that of traditional competitive ELISA, and the detection range was 0.177–6.073 ng mL−1. This method exhibited high specificity with no cross-reaction in other structural analogs. The average recovery rate of DON in corn flour samples was 89.1 %–110.2 %, demonstrating the high accuracy and stability of this assay in actual sample detection. Therefore, the colorimetric immunoassay can be used for DON-related food safety monitoring.
