Jeho boj je nenásilný, prosazuje toleranci a respekt. Za svou činnost získal roku 1989 Nobelovu cenu míru. Stal se duchovní autoritou, kterou uznávají nejvyšší představitelé mnoha zemí. Pouze Peking tvrdí, že je mužem dvou tváří, který podporuje revoltu proti Číně. Na začátku července 2002 mu bude 67 let.

V únoru 1990 se tibetský ...dalajláma setkal s českým kardinálem Františkem Tomáškem. Jejich rozhovor proběhl bez účasti médií. Poté se dalajláma také sešel s představiteli nekatolických církví, náboženských společností a židovské obce.
