Classism, sexism, and racism are structural elements of the violence suffered by racialized women around the world and every day more people are forced to move from one country to another, trying to ...find better living conditions. The objective of this work is to make visible the transit experiences of Haitian women who have left Chile for the United States and Canada, seeking dignity for themselves and their families. It is also an invitation to incorporate and capture in our research, the emotions involved in working with others and to discard the supposed neutrality so typical of academic research. These reflections arise from a militant work carried out with the Haitian community living in Chile over the last six years and the emotions that passed through my body, after accompanying, from a distance, four friends who undertook this journey and survived death, kidnapping and extortion and had the courage to tell it.
Clasismo, sexismo y racismo son elementos estructurales de la violencia que sufren mujeres racializadas en todo el mundo y cada día más personas son obligadas a desplazarse de un país a otro, intentando encontrar mejores condiciones de vida. El objetivo de este trabajo es visibilizar las experiencias de tránsito de mujeres haitianas que han partido desde Chile a Estados Unidos y Canadá, buscando dignidad para ellas y sus familias. También, es una invitación a incorporar y plasmar en nuestras investigaciones, las emociones que implica el trabajo con otros/as y desechar la supuesta neutralidad tan propia de la investigación academicista. Estas reflexiones surgen a propósito de un trabajo militante desarrollado con la comunidad haitiana residente en Chile durante los últimos seis años y las emociones que pasaron por mi cuerpo, tras acompañar, a distancia, a cuatro amigas que emprendieron este viaje y sobrevivieron a la muerte, el secuestro y la extorción y tuvieron el valor para contarlo.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the Colombian region of Urabá, that borders Panama, has gained notoriety for the transit of people moving from Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean to North ...America. Using an ethnographic approach, this article examines how the accounts of local bureaucrats and other actors in the region frame these movements within the influence of “redes,” that is, networks, a vague reference to the hold illegal armed actors and smugglers have over the region. We argue that redes works as a placeholder that simplifies the complexities around these types of migration and gives the phenomenon distorted contours which ignore the agency of people on‐the‐move. We contrast local accounts of the criminal influence over these movements to those of the travelers themselves who describe a variety of interactions along their journeys, but do not mention networks of this kind.

Desde el inicio del siglo XXI, la región colombiana de Urabá, fronteriza con Panamá, ha ganado notoriedad por el tránsito de personas que se desplazan desde Asia, África y el Caribe hacia Norteamérica. Utilizando un enfoque etnográfico, este artículo examina cómo los relatos de los funcionarios locales y otros actores de la región enmarcan estos movimientos dentro de la influencia de las “redes”, una referencia imprecisa al control que los actores armados ilegales y los contrabandistas ejercen sobre la región. Nuestro argumento es que las redes funcionan como un significante vacío que simplifica las complejidades en torno a estos tipos de migración y da al fenómeno contornos distorsionados que ignoran la agencia de las personas en movimiento. Contrastamos los relatos locales sobre la influencia criminal en estos movimientos con aquellos de los propios viajeros, que describen diversas interacciones a lo largo de sus viajes, pero no mencionan redes de este tipo.
Chocó-Darien is an important biogeographic realm, as it is a terrestrial biodiversity hotspot and the southern limit of the Caribbean reefs. However, to date there are no compiled data on the reef ...fish assemblage of this region. We provide an updated checklist of marine fishes from the Chocó-Darien reef system (Colombia), with comments on their geographic distribution and conservation status. Peer-reviewed studies, unpublished data and in situ visual censuses were surveyed to compose this checklist. A total of 212 reef fish species across 57 families were compiled, eight of which had no previously published records, one of which (Trachinotus falcatus) is recorded for the first time. The most speciose families were Labridae (n = 21), Gobiidae (n = 18) and Serranidae (n = 17). Fourteen threatened species were recorded, including one critically endangered (Epinephelus striatus) and two endangered (Balistes vetula and Scarus coelestinus). This study contributes to fill the knowledge gaps on the reef fish diversity of the Caribbean southern limit and raises concern on the spread of the lionfish invasion into the Chocó-Darién reef system.
Protected areas in border zones it is a recurring way to solve conflicts between neighbouring States in the international system. Oftentimes, the international boundaries suffer politics ...interventions that impact the local fauna and flora. In South America, the Darién Gap is one among many geopolitics strategy examples created to solve border conflicts. From the independence of Panama in 1903, the border between Panama and Colombia became a buffer zone covered by a forest, which interrupt the Pan-American Highway. The lack of connection between the two countries persisted throughout the 20th century and even today a solution is not glimpsed. Even though from the 21st century onwards, South American integration projects have received a great boost with initiatives such as IIRSA-COSIPLAN. This initiative was responsible for intense interactions between South America’s countries. In this sense, the following article presents an analysis of the recent process of integration between South America countries in an area of strategic border (the Darién Gap) and focuses on a vital highway for the economics and socials interests of the continent (Pan-American Highway).
A existência de áreas protegidas nas fronteiras é uma solução recorrente no sistema internacional para solucionar conflitos entre Estados vizinhos. Muitas vezes, os limites internacionais sofrem intervenções políticas, o que resulta em danos à fauna e flora endêmicas. Na América do Sul, o Tampão de Darién é um dos muito exemplos de estratégia geopolítica criada como solução de disputas em zonas de fronteira. Com a independência do Panamá, em 1903, a fronteira entre esse país e a Colômbia se converteu em uma zona-tampão de bosques que bloqueia o trajeto da rodovia Pan-Americana. A falta de conexão entre os dois países perdurou durante todo o século XX e ainda hoje uma solução não é vislumbrada, ainda que a partir do século XXI, projetos de integração sul-americana tenham recebido um grande impulso com iniciativas como a IIRSA-COSIPLAN. Essa iniciativa foi responsável por interações mais intensas entre os países da América do Sul. Nesse sentido, o presente artigo apresenta uma análise do processo recente de integração da América do Sul em uma área de fronteira estratégica (o Tampão de Darién) e enfoca uma rodovia vital para os interesses econômicos e sociais do continente (a rodovia Pan-Americana).
En la frontera terrestre entre Colombia y Panamá se encuentra el Tapón del Darién, un punto clave en las migraciones panamericanas que ha experimentado un crecimiento drástico en el número de ...migrantes que toman la decisión de adentrarse en una selva, conocida por sus peligros, violencia y presencia de grupos armados, para buscar una vida mejor. El presente estudio analiza la intervención humanitaria en el contexto del Tapón del Darién, en respuesta a la crisis migratoria, y la aplicabilidad del triple nexo humanitario entre acción humanitaria, desarrollo y paz. Mediante una revisión bibliográfica y entrevistas cualitativas a entidades que forman parte de la respuesta humanitaria, se analiza la pertinencia de la aplicación del nexo en el contexto, así como la necesidad de la aplicación correcta de las tres dimensiones del nexo. El contexto, caracterizado por la cronificación de la crisis y una alta rotación de migrantes, responde a necesidades tanto cortoplacistas como de medio y largo plazo. Los hallazgos indican deficiencias en los mecanismos de coordinación, un impacto negativo del desamparo estatal en las políticas de desarrollo y la importancia crucial de las redes sociales en el flujo migratorio. Aunque el enfoque humanitario es esencial, se evidencia la necesidad de espacios de desarrollo y de la implementación del triple nexo, preservando el espacio humanitario y dando prioridad al cumplimiento de los principios humanitarios.
En 1510 se fundó la primera ciudad española en Tierra Firme sobre un poblado indígena llamado Darién, de habla cueva, en el lado occidental del golfo de Urabá. Esta ciudad, a la que los europeos ...llamaron Santa María de la Antigua del Darién, se convirtió cuatro años después en la capital de Castilla del Oro y llegó a tener aproximadamente 5 000 habitantes entre españoles e indígenas. La ciudad contaba con iglesia catedral, plaza principal, hospital, plaza de abastos, Casa de la Contratación, monasterio de San Francisco y cárcel, entre otras edificaciones. De los resultados de las excavaciones arqueológicas se ha podido identificar la ubicación de la ciudad y de sus diferentes fundaciones, sin embargo, no se cuenta con un plano de la época que permita entender con precisión su distribución. Este artículo tiene como objetivo empezar a entender la conformación urbanística, el desarrollo y la vida en esta ciudad, por medio de fuentes históricas.
Tropical forests, and more concretely, the Amazon Basin and the Chocó-Darién, are highly affected by deforestation activities. Households are the main land-use decision-makers and are key agents for ...forest conservation and deforestation. Understanding the determinants of deforestation at the household level is critical for conservation policies and sustainable development. We explore the drivers of household deforestation decisions, focusing on the quality of the forest resources (timber volume potential) and the institutional environment (conservation strategies, titling, and governmental grants). Both aspects are hypothesized to influence deforestation, but there is little empirical evidence. We address the following questions: (i) Does timber availability attract more deforestation? (ii) Do conservation strategies (incentive-based programs in the Central Amazon and protected areas in the Chocó-Darién) influence deforestation decisions in household located outside the areas under conservation? (iii) Does the absence of titling increase the odds of a household to deforest? (iv) Can governmental grants for poverty alleviation help in the fight against deforestation? We estimated a logit model, where the dependent variable reflects whether or not a household cleared forest within the farm. As predictors, we included the above variables and controlled by household-specific characteristics. This study was conducted in the Central Amazon and the Chocó-Darién of Ecuador, two major deforestation fronts in the country. We found that timber volume potential is associated with a higher odds of deforesting in the Central Amazon, but with a lower odds in the Chocó-Darién. Although conservation strategies can influence household decisions, the effects are context-dependent. Households near the incentive-based program (Central Amazon) have a lower odds of deforesting, whereas households near a protected area (Chocó-Darién) showed the opposite effect. Titling is also important for deforestation reduction; more attention is needed in the Chocó-Darién where numerous households are living in untitled lands. Finally, governmental grants for poverty alleviation showed the potential to generate positive environmental outcomes.
Resumen El presente artículo tiene por finalidad explorar cómo se pudieron establecer alianzas militares entre piratas y corsarios, y negros e indios desde mediados del siglo XVI hasta finales del ...siglo XVIII, en una zona de frontera del Imperio español conformada por el istmo de Panamá y el Darién. Para el desarrollo de esta investigación fue fundamental el entendimiento de las dinámicas internas de la piratería americana, de los indios nativos del Caribe y del Pacífico, de los negros esclavos y cimarrones, y de las autoridades españolas que ejercían su control en el Istmo del Darién, que por más de dos siglos tuvo que responder a las alianzas militares que surgieron entre los actores mencionados para mantener su sistema defensivo y su dominio colonizador en una de sus fronteras. La multiplicidad de factores que hicieron posible un encuentro o una alianza, ya fuera comercial, militar o por supervivencia, entre piratas, indios y negros en el continente americano, deja entrever los fenómenos socioculturales que se fueron desarrollando en el Nuevo Mundo, los cuales dan cuenta de un relacionamiento social que generó inestabilidad en el orden colonial con implicaciones de tipo administrativo, económico y militar para el Imperio español.
