How can teacher training students be prepared better for their profession? This explorative study deals with the development and evaluation of a university-based professionalization measure in the ...context of the internship semester. The aim is to qualify prospective teachers successively for the planning and implementation of inclusive teaching in the subject English against the background of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and a planning guide. Among other findings, a significant increase in students' self-efficacy expectations related to inclusive instructional design was observed. The study makes a first contribution to researching the potential of inclusion-oriented professionalization measures against the background of the UDL in the school subject English.
Wie können Lehramtsstudierende besser auf ihren Beruf vorbereitet werden? Die explorative Studie befasst sich mit der Entwicklung und Evaluation einer universitären Professionalisierungsmaßnahme im Rahmen des Praxissemesters. Ziel ist es, angehende Lehrkräfte sukzessiv für die Planung und Durchführung von inklusivem Unterricht im Fach Englisch vor dem Hintergrund des Universal Design for Learning (UDL) und eines Planungsleitfadens zu qualifizieren. U.a. zeigt sich eine signifikante Steigerung der studentischen Selbstwirksamkeitserwartungen bezogen auf inklusive Unterrichtsgestaltung. Die Studie leistet einen ersten Beitrag zur Erforschung des Potenzials von inklusionsorientierten Professionalisierungsmaßnahmen vor dem Hintergrund des UDL im Fach Englisch.
Las metodologías activas ofrecen nuevas formas de comunicar y conexionar la educación con la realidad existente (Giroux, 2008) y mejoran el aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras. La finalidad de la ...presente investigación es analizar si el uso integrado de seis metodologías activas (aprendizaje basado en tareas, aprendizaje cooperativo, instrucción basada en contenido, aprendizaje invertido, gamificación y aprendizaje basado en el juego) ayuda a disminuir los errores gramaticales de los estudiantes. Para proceder a tales efectos, se realiza una intervención empírica exploratoria en la asignatura de inglés como lengua extranjera fundamentada en dichas metodologías, tomando como muestra de estudio un grupo de 122 estudiantes de educación secundaria. Se utilizaron como instrumentos de recogida de datos dos test con el formato de entrevista. El análisis de los datos obtenidos confirma las hipótesis, ya que se observa una reducción significativa en el número de errores gramaticales tras el uso integrado de estas metodologías activas.
In the discipline of teaching English, scholars and even language teachers have long been interested in foreign language teaching anxiety (FLTA). With the increasing proliferation of English as a ...foreign language (EFL), there is a lack of comprehensive research on FLTA among EFL teachers. Therefore, the current study examines FLTA among 48 EFL teachers during their postgraduate programme at a public university in Northern Cyprus. The current analysis included the administration of the Teacher Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (TFLAS) and interviews. According to the results, the participants experienced varying degrees of foreign language teaching anxiety, and anxiety levels do not correlate with participants’ gender and teaching. The findings also revealed that fear of making mistakes was the primary factor that could induce language teaching anxiety. This study contributes to the existing body of prior research on FLTA with valuable contextualised data that could help alleviate anxiety levels experienced by EFL teachers.
The urge to turn the teaching of English as a foreign language into an inclusive and diverse space has recently become greater. For a few decades now, it has been highlighted the need for learners to ...develop not only their communicative competence, but also the intercultural one. However, the gap between these abstract expectations and specific teaching practices shows how much renovation is still a necessity. Understanding interculturality in its broadest sense, the article aims to evidence the little importance masculinities have been given in gender-critical educational research into foreign language teaching. To do so, a theoretical presentation of such concepts is carried out, as they are key to identify the related discourses that can be found in the world of English language teaching. As a conclusion, it suggests the assumption of these analytical categories in order to complement intercultural approaches, thus favouring diversity in English-teaching contexts for speakers of other languages. Finally, a list of possible themes as specific variables of upcoming empirical analysis is also proposed.
En el contexto de intercambios interculturales cada vez más frecuentes, el objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar el discurso de profesores argentinos de inglés como lengua extranjera ...respecto al concepto de hablante nativo. Para esto, partimos del marco teórico y analítico del Análisis de Discurso francés (Pêcheux, 1975) y brasileño (Orlandi, 2015; 2017) y trabajamos con la materialidad lingüística situada socio-históricamente. Las memorias discursivas evocadas remiten a dos perspectivas que sostienen, por un lado, prácticas clásicas relacionadas a una concepción estructuralista de lengua y de hablante nativo y, por el otro, ideas innovadoras ancladas en el giro sociolingüístico y comunicativo de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Asimismo, eventos glotopolíticos del corriente siglo empiezan a hacer eco en estos discursos.
La cognición docente analiza las concepciones de los profesores sobre qué significa enseñar, dando énfasis a creencias que afectan la manera de actuar del profesorado en el aula. Aunque es un campo ...de trabajo plenamente reconocido y establecido en las últimas décadas, todavía son pocos los estudios que analizan las creencias de docentes en formación de inglés como lengua extranjera. Este estudio analiza 17 filosofías de enseñanza de alumnas de la asignatura de “Didáctica del Inglés” en un máster de formación del profesorado del CEU San Pablo, una universidad privada de Madrid. El corpus formado por estos textos se ha analizado de forma cuantitativa y cualitativa. Por un lado, se ha procesado el texto con una herramienta online de gestión de corpus llamada Sketch Engine. Por otro lado, se ha analizado el corpus de forma cualitativa dividiendo los textos en 3 categorías de docentes en formación: con experiencia docente en academias y centros escolares, con experiencia en clases particulares y sin ningún tipo de experiencia. De este modo, se conseguirá conocer mejor las creencias de profesores en formación según el grado de experiencia en cuanto a temas como la definición de enseñanza/aprendizaje, el rol del profesor, el rol del alumno, la metodología de enseñanza y la evaluación.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the development of grammatical competence in Spanish secondary students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) through English-Spanish audiovisual translation ...(AVT). To this end, a quasi-experimental methodology has been implemented. An AVT task using fragments of the international series Game of Thrones, created by David BenioffyD. B. Weiss and produced by HBO in 2011, was used with a group of 43 students of secondary education aged between 15 and 16 years old. G rammatical competence level tests were carried out before and after the viewing and completion of the task. Results show a moderate decrease in the number of students failing the post-test after the intervention, as well as a noteworthy increase in the number of students attaining C and A grades, demonstrating the potential of AVT as a resource to enhance the acquisition of linguistic and grammatical competence in the EFL classroom.
El objetivo principal de esta investigación es analizar el desarrollo de la competencia gramatical en estudiantes de inglés como lengua extranjera en un contexto educativo español de educación secundaria a través de la traducción audiovisual (TAV) en la combinación lingüística inglés-español. Para ello, siguiendo una metodología cuasi-experimental, se realizó una prueba de nivel de competencia gramatical antes y después de la visualización y posterior tarea de TAV, empleando fragmentos de la serie internacional Juego de Tronos, creada por David Benioff y D.B Weiss y producida por HBO en 2011 con un grupo de 43 alumnos y alumnas de educación secundaria de edades comprendidas entre los 15 y los 16 años. Los resultados muestran un descenso moderado del número de estudiantes suspensos en la prueba final tras la intervención, así como un incremento notable en el número de estudiantes con calificación de bien y sobresaliente, lo que demuestra el potencial de la TAV como recurso para fomentar la adquisición de la competencia lingüística y gramatical en el aula de inglés como lengua extranjera.
This study investigates the professional development (PD) needs of primary English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers whose professional field has received significant interest at the global level ...in the past two decades. The study takes a different stance from previous research that exclusively generated data from teachers because it sought the perspectives of teacher educators as well. The decision to include teacher educators in this study has proven useful to generate ample data that suggest the inseparable relationships between primary EFL teachers' profiles, their needs and the specific typicality of their professional environment. The study proposes a model of needs-based PD for primary EFL teachers that exemplifies these aspects. The discussion in the study brings implications for future research into the PD needs of primary EFL teachers. It will also inform teacher educators and educational policy-makers to develop a framework of reference for the design of PD programmes that well attend to primary EFL teachers' needs.
This study compares the official discourse of the National English Program (PRONI) on assessment and what actually happens in practice. To do this, the perceptions of nine PRONI teachers from primary ...schools in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, about their own teaching contexts, are studied. A qualitative approach was chosen where semi-structured interviews were used for data collection. The results revealed that there is a lack of correspondence between the official discourse of PRONI on the evaluation of learning and the practice in the classroom. Participants revealed that some contextual conditions in the classroom, such as lack of time and large groups, as well as multiple levels of English proficiency within the same group, make it difficult to assess learning. These contextual conditions sometimes generate negative attitudes of the students towards the evaluation.
El presente estudio compara el discurso oficial del Programa Nacional de Inglés (PRONI) sobre la evaluación y lo que realmente sucede en la práctica. Para ello se estudian las percepciones de nueve docentes del PRONI de escuelas primarias de Xalapa, Veracruz, México, acerca de sus propios contextos de enseñanza. Se optó por un enfoque cualitativo donde se utilizaron las entrevistas semiestructuradas para la recolección de los datos. Los resultados revelaron que hay una falta de correspondencia entre el discurso oficial del PRONI sobre la evaluación del aprendizaje y la práctica en las aulas. Los participantes dieron a conocer que algunas condiciones contextuales en el aula, tales como la falta de tiempo y los grupos muy numerosos, así como los multiniveles de competencia de inglés dentro de un mismo grupo, dificultan la evaluación del aprendizaje. Estas condiciones contextuales a veces generan actitudes negativas de los estudiantes hacia la evaluación.
