academic year 2016-2017. The qualitative and qualitative data collected by means of the questionnaire reveal
that (1) students in the sample have effective linguistic characteristics while learning EFL, and (2) there is no
statistically significant differences between the male and female students on the basis of gender in general.
Este estudio intenta investigar las características lingüísticas de los estudiantes universitarios de EFL. Se
administró un cuestionario a una muestra seleccionada al azar de 95 estudiantes de 2º y 2º de EFL en el
Departamento de Lengua Inglesa, Facultad de Humanidades, Universidad de Zakho, Región del Kurdistán,
Iraq, durante el segundo trimestre del año académico 2016-2017. Los datos cuantitativos y cualitativos
recolectados a través del cuestionario revelan que (1) los estudiantes de la muestra tienen características
lingüísticas efectivas mientras aprenden EFL, y (2) no hay diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los
estudiantes masculinos y femeninos en función del género en general.
Although it is recognized that the reading of specialized texts is essential in academic settings, it constitutes a real challenge for university students due to the particular characteristics of ...this type of texts, the disciplinary specificities they reflect and the fact that they are largely available only in English. Thus, it is important to know in depth the characteristics of the texts generally used for teaching disciplinary content in undergraduate courses at university level. The objective of this work is to present the main results of the analysis of the semantic, functional and formal features of a corpus made up of research articles corresponding to three disciplinary areas. The results reveal that the texts belonging to these disciplinary areas present traits in common as well as particular characteristics in each of the three levels analyzed. These findings are expected to serve as the basis for an in-depth analysis of this type of texts in other disciplines not contemplated in this study and to contribute to the design of study programs and teaching materials for the teaching of English for academic purposes at the higher level adjusted to the specificities of each discipline.
Si bien se reconoce que la lectura de textos especializados es fundamental en entornos académicos, ésta constituye un verdadero desafío para los estudiantes universitarios, debido a las características particulares de estos textos, las especificidades disciplinares que los mismos reflejan, y al hecho de que los mismos están en gran medida disponibles solo en inglés. Es importante entonces, conocer en profundidad las características de los textos generalmente utilizados para la enseñanza de contenidos disciplinares en carreras de grado en el ámbito universitario. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar los principales resultados del análisis de los rasgos semánticos, funcionales y formales de un corpus conformado por artículos de investigación correspondientes a tres áreas disciplinares. Los resultados revelan que los textos pertenecientes a cada área disciplinar estudiada presentan rasgos en común, así como también características particulares en los tres niveles analizados. Se espera que estos hallazgos sirvan como base para un análisis en profundidad de estos textos en otras disciplinas no contempladas en este estudio, y que contribuyan al diseño de programas de estudio y materiales didácticos para la enseñanza de inglés con fines académicos en el nivel superior ajustados a las especificidades de cada disciplina.
El objeto del presente trabajo es recabar información sobre el uso de las presentaciones orales en inglés en Educación Superior. Treinta y cinco estudiantes divididos en dos grupos ...–Aprendizaje-integrado-de-contenido-y-lengua-extranjera (AICLE) e Inglés-como-lengua-extranjera (ILE) fueron encuestados sobre su experiencia con esta herramienta de aprendizaje, recibieron formación teórica y práctica sobre cómo hacer una buena presentación oral en inglés, realizaron tareas en las que tenían que llevar a cabo una presentación oral en inglés, que era juzgada tanto por ellos mismos como por el resto de compañeros, y por último evaluaron la experiencia educativa. Se administraron dos cuestionarios, uno al inicio de la experiencia de innovación educativa y otro al final. El análisis de las respuestas obtenidas a través del cuestionario final demostró que, en comparación con las ganancias significativas percibidas por los estudiantes ILE, el alumnado AICLE no percibía que sus habilidades en lengua inglesa hubieran mejorado después del tratamiento con presentaciones orales, lo que sugiere que quizá las clases AICLE, en contraste con las de ILE, se centran principalmente en el contenido y se olvidan considerablemente del componente lingüístico. En consecuencia, hacemos una llamada a una mejor integración del contenido y la lengua y al uso de técnicas de atención a la forma en los contextos AICLE en la universidad
Whereas the role of anxiety and enjoyment in predicting learning outcomes is well documented in the literature, the role of these two emotion dimensions in predicting perceived sense of classroom ...community is rarely discussed in the literature despite the fact that classroom community serves as a good predictor of learning outcomes. Conducted in a sociocultural context which is under-represented in the international literature, the present study was designed to predict participants’ perceived sense of classroom community based on their reported enjoyment and anxiety scores. A total of 402 senior high school students (male: 153, female: 249) participated in the study. Participants were invited to complete the questionnaires measuring foreign language enjoyment, foreign language anxiety, and perceived sense of classroom community. Multiple regression analysis indicated that foreign language classroom anxiety and enjoyment concurrently explained 39% of the total variance in sense of classroom community. Foreign language enjoyment turned out to be a stronger positive predictor, whereas anxiety was a negative predictor. Both variables were significant predictors for sense of classroom community regardless of gender. Whereas males and females were comparable in terms of perceived sense of classroom community and foreign language enjoyment, females were more anxious than males.

This small-scale study on verbal humour takes place within a larger project entitled “From perception to oral production”, which aims to identify the links between comprehension and production ...processes and the sources of difficulty for French learners of English. The data consist of three comparable corpora of filmed semi-structured interviews with first (L1) and second (L2) language students: French-French L1; English-English L1; and English L1 with L2. The interviews revolve around the same extract of an American romantic comedy, which the students were asked to describe and comment upon. Instances of spontaneous humour were found to occur in all corpora and were analysed using the cross-cultural comparative model previously used for French-English comparative studies of verbal humour (Béal & Mullan 2013; 2017a; Mullan & Béal 2018a). The humour used by the native speakers of French (N=7) and English (N=7) served as the initial basis for comparison with the L2 English speakers (N=34). It was found that the humour and laughter in the L1 interviews were employed by both parties to achieve certain pragmatic functions related to this particular institutional setting: the participants used humour primarily to create a connection with the interviewer (often through implicit references, and especially where both participants were female). The French students speaking English as L2 tended to use self-oriented humour as a face-saving device to deflect from their production or comprehension difficulties.The use of humour by all L1 and L2 participants nevertheless reflected specific cultural tendencies outlined in Béal & Mullan (2013; 2017a) and Mullan & Béal (2018a), such as the prevalence of third-party oriented humour in French interactions and of self-deprecating humour in English. In sum, and perhaps unsurprisingly, we show that the French learners of English have mastered some aspects of humour in their L2, but still exhibit most of the characteristics of verbal humour from their native French.
Cada vez son más las familias españolas que, en España, deciden comunicarse en inglés con sus hijos. A pesar de que este tipo de crianza bilingüe no nativa es un fenómeno en auge en España, todavía ...permanece prácticamente inexplorado desde una perspectiva científica. En el presente estudio nos planteamos conocer algunas de las características y motivaciones de los padres que ejercen este tipo de crianza bilingüe. En este afán, partimos de la hipótesis de que, en comparación con las familias que se comunican en lengua materna con sus hijos, las que lo hacen en inglés de forma habitual son competentes en esta lengua y gozan de un estatus socioeconómico medio-alto, y nos planteamos analizar si existe correlación entre estas variables. Para ello, preguntamos a 470 familias hablantes de español y residentes en España, de entre las que identificamos a 143 que aseguraron comunicarse con su hijos en inglés regularmente. Comparando ambos grupos, comprobamos que las familias que aseguran comunicarse en inglés con sus hijos se autoperciben competentes en esta lengua. No obstante, a diferencia de lo esperado, observamos que no existe relación entre el nivel socioeconómico autopercibido y la mayor frecuencia de uso del inglés en el hogar. Posteriormente, exploramos las motivaciones de estas 143 familias y, con ello, observamos que la decisión de las familias españolas de incluir el inglés en el hogar se debe a, principalmente, a factores lingüísticos, educativos, profesionales, cognitivos, sociales y culturales y, en menor medida, a motivaciones de carácter económico, emocional, familiar e identitario.
