The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) published the Library Reference Model (LRM) in August 2017, which is consolidation of the separately developed conceptual ...models: Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD), and Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data (FRSAD). BIBFRAME 2.0 is the latest version of the metadata model and vocabulary, which comes from the BIBFRAME Imitative "to evolve bibliographic description standards to a linked data model, in order to make bibliographic information more useful both within and outside the library community.

In the bibliographic environment, the term aggregate is used to describe a bibliographic entity formed by combining distinct bibliographic units together. Aggregates are a large and growing class of ...information resources-up to 20% of the bibliographic records in OCLC's WorldCat may represent aggregates. The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records: Final Report only briefly references aggregates. Difficulties and inconsistencies in the application of the FRBR model to aggregates have been identified as a significant impediment to FRBR implementation. To address the issue, the FRBR Review Group established a Working Group on Aggregates that completed its charge and submitted its final report in 2011. The Working Group proposed that an aggregate be defined as a "manifestation embodying multiple distinct expressions." This article examines the proposed definition and explores how aggregates can be modeled.
The paper presents the work of the Italian Translation Working Group, describing its different steps and emerging issues. Authors argue that in a few but difficult cases, it was necessary, by hard ...conceptual work, to define whether the term in a chapter or section was used in its traditional meaning or in a meaning that was partially or completely new, because it was essential not to deprive the original text of its –real or attempted –innovative potential. In translating new terms of RDA, three possible approaches are to use in different cases: following tradition, common use, or relying on the context. The authors believe that all the three approaches are correct, but when the results from the first or the second approach are ineffective or doubtful, only the last one – relying on the context - can support the correct, and hopefully largely agreed, decision.
In the past two decades, the field of music cataloging has been dominated by the development and implementation of Resource Description and Access (RDA). RDA, built on the foundation of the ...Anglo-American cataloging rules, has revolutionized cataloging practices and has been instrumental in promoting cooperative cataloging efforts. The implementation of RDA has been accompanied by the proliferation of controlled vocabularies, which have become essential in describing and providing access to music resources. These controlled vocabularies cover various aspects of music, including form, genre, medium of performance, and thematic indexes. The development of these vocabularies has been a collaborative effort involving organizations such as the Music Library Association (MLA) and the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and Documentation Centers (IAML). In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in music cataloging. Efforts have been made to address historical inequities and to incorporate diverse perspectives in cataloging practices. The future of music cataloging holds promises of multilingual and multiscript access, improved privacy and accessibility, and technological solutions for evolving descriptive practices. However, progress in these areas relies on the dedication and commitment of individuals and organizations in the field.
This paper introduces similarities and differences between disciplines dealing with the formal description of cultural heritage. A particular focus is given to the usage of Semantic Web technologies ...to add value to data. By sharing open data and building a network of relations between cultural objects, the Linked Open Data cloud can be a new tool for disseminating knowledge. A case study on the Fondazione Zeri photo archive is here presented so as to exemplify methods and ontologies adopted for integrating domains.
PurposeThis study seeks to understand the current state of the development of linked open data (LOD) bibliographic portals to discuss their functionalities, contributions, value-adds and user ...experience.Design/methodology/approachA set of evaluative aspects grouped into three analysis dimensions was established: collections, tools—technologies and standards used—and web user interface. As the object of the study, four projects of diverse nature and volume were selected to help provide a better understanding of the trends in the solutions provided for the end user when accessing linked data collections.FindingsPublishing LOD through visual interfaces maximises information enrichment, contextualisation and discovery, in addition to improving user experience, because of both increased navigation capabilities and interrelationships between data. These more flexible environments have metamorphosised the visualisation of bibliographic information. However, aspects that needed improvement were observed, primarily relating to (1) a more intuitive interaction, (2) possibilities of greater personalisation, (3) enhanced communication with the user to favour user engagement and (4) experimental spaces of data reuse.Research limitations/implicationsFurther quantitative and qualitative studies should be conducted to improve these portals, assess their adaptation to the behaviour of the user and their influence on the use of library collections.Originality/valueThis article investigates the potential of semantic technologies in bibliographic data portals, proposes a methodological model for their evaluation and advances conclusions about the usability and user experience that these platforms provide, compared to classic catalogues.
Purpose
This study furthers metadata quality research by providing complementary network-based metrics and insights to analyze metadata records and identify areas for improvement.
...Design/methodology/approach
Metadata record graphs apply network analysis to metadata field values; this study evaluates the interconnectedness of subjects within each Hub aggregated into the Digital Public Library of America. It also reviews the effects of NACO normalization – simulating revision of values for consistency – and breaking up pre-coordinated subject headings – to simulate applying the Faceted Application of Subject Terminology to Library of Congress Subject Headings.
Findings
Network statistics complement count- or value-based metrics by providing context related to the number of records a user might actually find starting from one item and moving to others via shared subject values. Additionally, connectivity increases through the normalization of values to correct or adjust for formatting differences or by breaking pre-coordinated subject strings into separate topics.
Research limitations/implications
This analysis focuses on exact-string matches, which is the lowest-common denominator for searching, although many search engines and digital library indexes may use less stringent matching methods. In terms of practical implications for evaluating or improving subjects in metadata, the normalization components demonstrate where resources may be most effectively allocated for these activities (depending on a collection).
Originality/value
Although the individual components of this research are not particularly novel, network analysis has not generally been applied to metadata analysis. This research furthers previous studies related to metadata quality analysis of aggregations and digital collections in general.

The essay introduces the conceptual model IFLA LRM (Library Reference Model) in its fundamental features and highlights the innovative changes. In detail, it studies the main changes in the ...definition of entities, attributes and relationships described in the previous model of FRBR family. The paper underlines the original introduction of a hierarchy of the entities specified in the model to create data more appropriate for the semantic web, the theoretical new expressed by the attribute “manifestation statement” and the potential effect on library data and their re-use in a semantic web.

La traduzione italiana di RDA è il risultato di un lavoro di un gruppo di ...esperti, provenienti dalle migliori università italiane sia pubbliche che private, dalle migliori biblioteche e agenzie bibliografiche e dalla Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. La traduzione italiana è, inoltre, una traduzione ufficiale per l’Italia e verrà pubblicata dall’ICCU all’interno del RDA Toolkit verso la fine del 2015. L’idea di una traduzione italiana è emersa dal desiderio di studiare lo standard RDA nel dettaglio, per meglio comprendere e sottolineare i principi, l’intero sistema, la terminologia e allo stesso tempo per analizzare il testo e i molti esempi. Il completamento della traduzione segna un punto cardine per il futuro del RDA in Italia. Si è giunti in un momento in cui SBN, il più importante progetto di cooperazione bibliotecaria raggiunto nel nostro paese fino ad oggi, è da ristrutturare. È il momento di ringiovanire SBN, per abbracciare i principi e gli standard internazionali attuali, e per rivolgersi verso le innovazioni tecnologiche, come i linked open data.
