This paper compares the outcomes of two research studies conducted in 2010 and 2013, which together trace the evolution of discovery systems from basic user interfaces to sophisticated web-scale ...programs and services. The findings from this research comparison indicate that discovery tools have greatly improved in the past 3 years, and, indeed, some of these tools such as Primo and WorldCat Local are web-scale in every sense of the expression. Literature on discovery tools has abounded in recent years, especially the past 3 years, following the release of several web-scale discovery tools. Most of this research has consisted of case studies and usability tests for web-scale discovery systems. The comparative data in this report are derived from the two previously noted studies: Yang and Wagner (2010) and Chickering and Yang (2013). To produce the author's report in this paper, she used the findings from these two studies to compare the improvements the vendors made to their systems between 2010 and 2013.

When I refer to MARC in this column, I am conflating several interrelated things. There are the MARC syntax, the MARC data elements, and the AngloAmerican Cataloging Rules (AACR). These pieces are so ...intertwined that teasing out which must be jettisoned and which can be kept will be at least as difficult as starting from scratch. In next month's column, I will take a closer look at this issue by addressing MARC exit strategies.

Zabel (Schreyer Business Lib., Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park; ...coauthor, "The Quality Management Sourcebook") provides a much-needed supplement to the general introductions to reference librarianship that dominate the market with this collection of 25 new pieces by active and well-placed public service professionals.
The Pode Project's Purpose Most public libraries in Norway are currently at the mercy of the content management systems that are provided by local authorities, while the interface of the OPAC is ...provided by the vendors of the automated library system. Due to sorting methods, the first 14 hits aren't books written by Hamsun at all.\n This new use of catalog data reveals some weaknesses in the MARC format. Since MARC in itself isn't meaningful or semantic, all programming requires an in-depth knowledge about the fields as well as an understanding of how the fields have been used within a particular catalog.
