// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The study of isolated intellectual careers is very often the victim of an error that Pierre Bourdieu has called `biographical illusion'. The analytic strategy based on comparison of individual itineraries involved in similar contexts allows eventually an apprehension more attentive to the social factors that constrains them. In this sense, this article looks at the trajectory of four characters -Florestan Fernandes, Gino Germani, Antonio Candido and Adolfo Prieto - who were the main protagonists of the modernization of sociology and literary criticism in Brazil and Argentina between the decades of the 1950s and 1960s.
The genetic surveys of the population of Britain conducted by Weale et al. and Capelli et al. produced estimates of the Germani immigration into Britain during the early Anglo-Saxon period, ...c.430–c.730. These estimates are considerably higher than the estimates of archaeologists. A possible explanation suggests that an apartheid-like social system existed in the early Anglo-Saxon kingdoms resulting in the Germani breeding more quickly than the Britons. Thomas et al. attempted to model this suggestion and showed that it was a possible explanation if all Anglo-Saxon kingdoms had such a system for up to 400 years. I noted that their explanation ignored the probability that Germani have been arriving in Britain for at least the past three millennia, including Belgae and Roman soldiers, and not only during the early Anglo-Saxon period. I produced a population model for Britain taking into account this long term, low level migration that showed that the estimates could be reconciled without the need for introducing an apartheid-like system. In turn, Thomas et al. responded, criticizing my model and arguments, which they considered persuasively written but wanting in terms of methodology, data sources, underlying assumptions, and application. Here, I respond in detail to those criticisms and argue that it is still unnecessary to introduce an apartheid-like system in order to reconcile the different estimates of Germani arrivals. A point of confusion is that geneticists are interested in ancestry, while archaeologists are interested in ethnicity: it is the bones, not the burial rites, which are important in the present context.
It is commonly believed that the teaching of sociology spread in Latin America only after 1960. However, sociological textbooks were published before then in response to increasing demand. A ...comparative analysis is made of eight books, four each from Argentina and Mexico; these are a broad cross-section of those then available to local students and cited in reading lists. Common and divergent topics, traditions, concepts, research methods, theories and cross-references are sought, and reasons for the similarities and differences are explored, with special attention to possible US influence. This teaching material is placed in the context of the local institutionalization of sociology at this period, and the history of sociological ideas in the region.
During the early sixties the term 'marginalisation' began to be used in Latin America in the social sciences to refer to the heterogeneous and inequitable effects of the processes of ...industrialisation and development. The term began to be used in the front-line between two paradigms in conflict, allowing for two different forms of interpretation: the notion of social or cultural marginalisation developed within modernisation theory, and the notion of economic marginalisation developed by dependence theory. This paper aims to review the characteristics that the concept of marginalisation acquired within each of these conceptual frameworks, focusing on works by Gino Germani, José Nun and Miguel Murmis. Last of all, the paper outlines the main arguments included in the contemporary form of the concept and its potential applicability to current circumstances in Latin America
// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: This work is focused on an analysis of the birth and development of the middle classes category on the works of Gino Germani. His discussion takes place in an historical context under which politics begins to take form under the rule of the demands of the masses, and in which the middle classes, their composition and behavior, mark the forms of social modernization and the premises for the analysis of the political development of Argentinian society. From the beginning of Germani's empirical sociology project, it emphasized the work that he intended to implement in order to neutralize the view point on social reality. This is in contrast with the relevance that the political variable acquired in his work, until his sociology transformed into political sociology.
