"Tragedy has always been an important literary genre. Topics dealt with these plays have so deeply penetrated the imaginary worldwide, in a way that in every century one can find rewritings of those ...scenarios.
The aim of this paper is to stimulate a reflection on the reception of Greek tragedies in the contemporary age. More specifically, we will look at the fortune of the “Oresteia”. This issue will be the starting point for a discussion concerning the ways in which the Classics enter the contemporary theatrical repertoire. With the aid of some examples, we will delve into some approaches in this practice. At first we will examine the difference between the translation of a Greek tragedy and an adaptation of such type of play. The comparison will lead us to some relevant considerations on the function of the actor’s body in these mises en scène."
In the 20th century, it is common to find some rewritings of classical myths set in post-apocalyptic scenarios. The aim of this paper is to propose an innovative research field that combine the study ...of dystopian literature and myth criticism. The new myth-critical approach considers three social innovations: informatization, which is essential in dystopian literature as well; migration and postcolonial literature, which is linked to the concept of the otherness science fiction thrives on; and finally, consumerism, which leads to eternal technical reproducibility, also presented in the dystopian works, especially in the concept of cloning. A concrete example are the dystopian adaptations of the myth of Antigone: the movie I Cannibali by Liliana Cavani, the epistolary novel In the Country of Last Things by Paul Auster, and the play Antígona Gelada by the portuguese author Armando Nascimento Rosa.
Learning about the human condition through Greek tragedies offers a dynamic way for medical students and professionals to reflect on their own experiences.
In this article, we discuss Philoctetes by ...Sophocles, which depicts an example of human vulnerability and offers powerful lessons on the nature and taxonomy of pain.
We describe how we used the lessons learned from Philoctetes to empathize with the different types of pain experienced by a patient with heart failure at a student-run clinic.
We hope that our experience using Greek tragedy to foster stronger patient-provider relationships and improve treatment outcomes encourages other medical students and healthcare professionals to use the humanities to inform our role as healers.
This article analyses the important role that the early reading of the book The birth of tragedy by Friedrich Nietzsche played in two different periods in the works of Alfonso Reyes. In the first period, during the youth of the Mexican author, from 1906 to 1909, his work expresses a definite Dionysian impulse in tune with his reading of Nietzsche. In the second stage, in the mature and serene period after Reyes’ return to Mexico in 1939, the poet maintains a combative and agonistic resistance to excess. His work evolves from a Dionysian pathos to an agonistic ethos. The two antagonistic forces –the Apollonian and Dionysian spirits– which produced the Greek tragedy and were analysed by Nietzsche always accompanied Reyes’ reflections on classical culture.
In this paper, we offer a detailed analysis of the particle που in Attic drama. We argue that Attic που is a marker of indirect personal evidentiality; it marks, in other words, that the information ...expressed has been obtained by inference or presumption. Additionally, we hypothesize that που is a pragmatic, intersubjective particle serving to establish or maintain common ground between speaker and addressee. In particular, as a grounding and hedging device, it can convey information with caution, putting speaker and addressee on the same informational level in order not to offend the addressee. In Section 1 we offer a concise statement of our argument and discuss a number of linguistic phenomena relevant to our analysis, most notably evidentiality, common ground, hedging, and grammaticalization (Sections 1.1-1.4). Section 2 outlines our corpus-based methodology and analytical criteria. The body of our paper is devoted to a close linguistic analysis of our corpus (Section 3). Section 4 offers our main conclusions.
This study addresses the legal status of Medea in the light of the Attic law, taking as reference her characterization in the homonymous tragedy of Euripides. Her legal situation, her conflict with ...Creon and Jason and the way she involves her children in a reprisal with strong personal motivations are analysed in parallel with the version of the same theme by Seneca. Finally, is made a brief evocation of the personal seclusion of the young Esmeralda, at the end of Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris, in which may be detected a possible influence of the characterization of Medea.
