In American films Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm appear as malleable as the folktales they collected and published. Not just framed by their cultural production, the Grimms are read through it. As a result, ...North American assumptions about folktales and fairy tales imbue the brothers with peculiar characteristics. The pliability of the brothers across mediated representations encourages viewers to interrogate the authority of storytellers and historical truth. I describe the filmed Grimms' failure to meet American cinema's normative standards for heterosexual masculine performance and explore the tension between feminized oral traditions and masculinized literary heritage that resurfaces in each film.
I analyze how Kurahashi Yumiko (1935–2005) reworks the Grimms' “Snow White” in the fairy-tale collectionOtona no tame no zankoku dōwa(Cruel Fairy Tales for Adults). Exploring Kurahashi's approach to ...fairy tales and her controversial relation with postmodernism and gender studies, I focus on how “Shirayuki hime” (Snow White) reproduces and deconstructs the models of femininity conveyed by the Grimms' tale.
Abstract
The lecture deals with life and works of the theologian and philologist Christoph Helwig (Helvicus), who was professor for Hebrew language at the University of Gießen, Germany. His ...scientific career is strongly connected both with the political and religious conflicts in Hessen in the beginning of the sixteenth century and with the Didactic reformer Wolfgang Ratke (Ratichus). The focus is directed upon the work "Jüdische Historien" (Jewish stories) which appeared in 1611 and 1612 and was absorbed by the fairy tale and legends researchers Brothers Grimm.
This article uses the concept of intertextuality to explore a dynamics of textual borrowing and revision between fairy-tale retellings and sociohistorical criticism on the Brothers Grimm and their ...Kinder-und Hausmärchen. The discussion draws on a selection of retellings in English, German, and Dutch that playfully undermine the Grimms' authority as folktale collectors, as critics such as Heinz Rölleke, Ruth B. Bottigheimer, and Jack Zipes have done in academic discourse. In addition, she introduces retellings that draw on older versions from the first edition of the Grimm tales and the Ölenberg manuscript.
