The architecture of the Habsburg period left landmarks in the provincial capital Sarajevo. But this orientalizing ("Moorish") style also found expression in the provinces. More than other places, it ...left its mark on the central Bosnian town of Travnik. Its designation as the seat of the district administration, its connection to the railroad network and construction activity as a result of major fires ensured that the district office was bustling with activity. The central question of this study is the role played by architects and engineers in the service of the provincial administration and their superordinate decision-makers in the spread of this style and the consolidation of a repertoire of forms. How was cultural convergence administered? What forms did it take outside the metropolitan areas? And what about this "colonial" heritage today?

Rural colonization in Europe is relatively marginal in early modern diaspora studies, a field that is more concentrated on urban, Mediterranean and Atlantic areas. However, colonial practices of ...estate managers in 18th-century Hungary are noteworthy for their magnitude and their originality. The cosmopolitan nature of the large-scale settlers’ recruitment policy differs from small-scale religious and “national” segregation. The way land was allocated was not the result of an institutionalized intolerance. It was a form of adaptation to the economic requirements of manorial management as well as to a community-based and enlightened ideal.
This article assesses Jacobite activities at the Habsburg court in Vienna from the mid-1720s to the early 1740s. Three Jacobite diplomatic agents belonging to the Stuart court in exile were sent to ...Vienna during this time. Although the emperor did not recognise the head of the Stuart court, its representatives were sometimes able to partake in the diplomatic rituals and ceremonies of court. By analysing correspondence between the Stuart court and its agents, one can identify how they operated in and used public and private spaces in Vienna to influence and gain the support of the Habsburg court. The agents were granted private audiences with Imperial ministers and could communicate informally with courtiers at public gatherings. Such contacts led them to gain access to the Imperial chambers to witness public events, to obtain news, and to communicate with members of the Imperial family. By examining these activities it is also possible to gain further insight into relations between these two courts. Despite the emperor’s refusal to engage with them, Jacobites maintained active public lives in Vienna, and they continuously made use of their opportunities both inside and outside of court to further their private diplomatic missions.
The anniversary of one hundred and fifty years since the passing of Saint Metropolitan Andrei Şaguna (28 June 1873) is the right moment to reflect on his portrait in history, his theological legacy, ...and his positive role in the historical evolution of the Romanians in Transylvania, Banat and Hungary in the second half of the 19th century. The study approaches a topic less discussed in Romanian, German or English historiography and theology, namely: the coats of arms of Andrei Şaguna, by the mercy of God “archbishop and metropolitan of the Orthodox Romanians of Transylvania and Hungary” and by the grace of Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria, Baron of the Austrian Empire. Among all Transylvanian Romanian Orthodox hierarchs, Metropolitan Şaguna is the only one who was raised by the Austrian emperor to the noble rank of baron. The title was conferred on him by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1852, being assumed by the hierarch both in his signature and in the official title used in his correspondence with the civil, military and ecclesiastical authorities of the Habsburg Monarchy and the Romanian Principalities, as well as on the title pages of books printed in Sibiu. The royal titles and orders, the baronial coat of arms and the metropolitan emblem illustrate the historical effigies and aristocratic stature of the complex personality of Metropolitan Andrei Şaguna and represent the new legal status and public dignity that the Romanian nation and the Transylvanian Orthodox Church acquired during his pastorate.
A comprehensive secularisation process in the course of the Josephinian reforms led to a complete restructuring of church assets. As early as 1783 a Greek-Oriental Religious Fund attributed to the ...Bukovina was established. Its growing economic and political role made this institution a major factor in the development of the region. It kept this important position until its eventual dissolution in the course of socialist restructuring of Romania in 1949.
