The congregational unification that took place in the community of Hamburg in 1652 was a complex phenomenon. Personal rivalries among the main patrician families conjoined with political and ...religious differences meant a troublesome start, resulting in a protracted conflict that affected the political system of the community during its decisive years (1652-1682). Based mainly on congregational sources, particularly in the community's protocol books, this article proposes a new interpretative model for understanding the events that led to the unification of the community, and that ultimately conspired to shape the policies and transitions of the subsequent period.
Rutting and moisture damage are the most common distress types in the pavement; therefore, agencies have adopted performance tests such as the Hamburg wheel tracking test (HWTT) to specify and screen ...the asphalt concrete rutting performance, following the AASHTO T324 standard. Many studies have shown that the AASHTO parameters can be used to characterize and rank the performance of asphalt mixes. Additionally, researchers proposed new analysis methods and performance parameters to provide a more systematic approach to analyzing the HWTT results. However, some of these performance parameters are determined subjectively by the operator, which may result in ambiguous values, preventing agencies from adopting them in the specification. On top of that, it is also unclear whether each analysis method or the performance parameters can universally distinguish the rutting performance when applied to various HWTT results. Thus, this study investigates the feasibility of different HWTT analysis methods among the performance parameters. 61 HWTT results from various material combinations were analyzed using three different data analysis approaches and calculating the performance parameters. The result showed that the current analysis methods and parameters have certain limitations in analyzing HWTT results. Therefore, a performance parameter, namely the Hamburg performance index (HPI), was introduced, incorporating the number of passes, maximum rut depth, and rut path history into one parameter. It was found that the HPI can resolve the limitation encountered by other analysis approaches and significantly improve the accuracy of distinguishing a mix's rutting and moisture resistance.

Over the last ten years or so, Hamburg's public authorities have seen the emergence of new private operators in the mobility field: digital shared mobility platforms. In an attempt to regulate them, ...public authorities embraced the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) by creating the Switchh platform in 2013, backed up by “mobility stations” deployed in public spaces. This article looks at how the city of Hamburg is using MaaS as an instrument to i) organise this new ecosystem of mobility stakeholders and ii) transform public space to meet its sustainable mobility objectives. Our qualitative study, based on semi-structured interviews, documents analysis and observation, shows that the public authorities are taking advantage of MaaS as a tool for coordinating players, via the city's public transport operator. However, the public sector's lack of human and financial resources, coupled with the neo-liberal interests of private operators in a freely competitive market, has led to the privatisation of Hamburg's public space through MaaS, and calls into question its social effects.

However, Edmund Siemers became really famous for his two large foundations: in 1896 Edmundsthal-Siemerswalde in Geesthacht, one of the first pulmonary treatment centres in Germany, and in 1907 the lecture building on the Moorweide, still a symbol of "the University" in Hamburg.Edmund Siemers' life is equally linked to the Hamburg, German and Transatlantic economic history of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He embodies a donor from Hamburg's upper middle classes in an ideal-typical manner. This is the first biography of "Hamburg's Carnegie", who also appeared as a donor and member of the board of trustees of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation.
A Social History of Early Rock 'n' Roll in Germany explores the people and spaces of St. Pauli's rock'n'roll scene in the 1960s. Starting in 1960, young British rockers were hired to entertain ...tourists in Hamburg's red-light district around the Reeperbahn in the area of St. Pauli. German youths quickly joined in to experience the forbidden thrill of rock'n'roll, and used African American sounds to distance themselves from the old Nazi generation. In 1962 the Star Club opened and drew international attention for hosting some of the Beatles' most influential performances. In this book, Julia Sneeringer weaves together this story of youth culture with histories of sex and gender, popular culture, media, and subculture. By exploring the history of one locale in depth, Sneeringer offers a welcome contribution to the scholarly literature on space, place, sound and the city, and pays overdue attention to the impact that Hamburg had upon music and style. She is also careful to place performers such as The Beatles back into the social, spatial, and musical contexts that shaped them and their generation. This book reveals that transnational encounters between musicians, fans, entrepreneurs and businessmen in St. Pauli produced a musical style that provided emotional and physical liberation and challenged powerful forces of conservatism and conformity with effects that transformed the world for decades to come.
In recent months, debate has been swirling in Hamburg over the rebuilding of the Bornplatz synagogue. My concern is a work of art, 'Synagogue Monument,' a memorial created by local artist Margrit ...Kahl (1942-2009) to mark the fiftieth jubilee of the November pogrom. Kahl traced the synagogue's outline with cobblestones, on its original scale, as well as its complex domed ceiling and vaulted spaces. At present, the inclination is to integrate the mosaic into the new synagogue. If this plan is carried out, the decisive features of this work of art would be destroyed, and with it the memory of the old local Jewish community. Moreover, it would come at the expense of the significant place Hamburg holds in German postwar memorial culture.
