Through engaging the writings of two Jewish thinkers, Emmanuel Levinas and Etty Hillesum, this essay sets out to develop a Christian theological approach to affectivity. It begins by introducing ...Levinas and Hillesum to develop a context for dialogue between Jewish thought and Christian theology. Initiating a phenomenological foundation, the essay suggests that affectivity resonates through the human condition of loneliness and otherness. Building on this perspective and aided by Levinas's thought and the practical expression of Hillesum's affectivity of talking to God, the focus turns to introduce and develop the notions of spontaneity, melancholy, and vigilance. Hence, it suggests the central elements of a theological approach to human affectivity in Christian living. Accordingly, by seeking to be poor in spirit and offering friendship to the poor, affectivity becomes a way for the Christian community to live in unity, signifying the resilience to embrace the turbulence of conversion, the shock of encountering the other's suffering, and the joy of loving others "so terribly."

This article presents the results of a qualitative case study on the diaries of Etty Hillesum. The focus of this investigation is on the way her inner development leads to increased sensitivity. This ...research revealed that Etty’s inner development is characterized by a transformation from great opacity to transparency in three phases. Whereas she is at first lost in inner chaos, she shows an impressive serenity and inner peace at the end of her writings. It is argued that in each of the three phases, Etty adapts her strategies to the new challenges she has to face in life. The main processes involved here are “mental cleansing,” “mental slimming,” and “mental emptying.” Going through these processes, she codevelops the sensitivity as well as the firmness she needs to face reality in all its aspects.
This paper explores the relation between the moral philosophy of Charles Taylor and the wartime diary of Etty Hillesum. Written in Amsterdam between 1941 and 1942, Hillesum’s diary records her effort ...to construct a meaningful identity in relation to the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. That effort, I want to claim, is clarified via an interface with Taylor’s notion of “authenticity.” Taylor argues that authenticity constitutes a moral ideal that serves to measure the worth and value of the lived life. Such is the fundamental mission of Hillesum. In the final analysis I argue that Taylor’s moral philosophy lends structure, form and substance to Hillesum’s thought, while Hillesum’s journey vivifies the veracity of Taylor’s project. Her life situation both embodies and expresses the contemporaneity of Taylor’s work and illuminates its existential significance. Thus the importance of authenticity is not just a philosophical hypothesis but an issue with historical flesh and bone. Or so suggests Hillesum’s search for authenticity in a turbulent age.
Drawing on Etty Hillesum's writings, this book offers a comprehensive account of international scholarship on the life, works and vision of the Dutch Jewish writer Etty Hillesum, whose life was ...shaped by the totalitarian Nazi-regime, and who lived a courageous spirituality in the darkest period of the twentieth century.
ABSTRACT
I do four things in this essay: (1) briefly rehearse the biographies of Simone Weil and Etty Hillesum, (2) outline and compare some of the key themes in their lives and works, noting ...interesting (and also troubling) similarities between them, as well as salient differences, (3) use their examples as lenses through which to look at contemporary attitudes toward altruism vs. self‐interest, freedom vs. necessity, eating vs. fasting, and acting vs. writing, and (4) highlight both their strengths and their weaknesses as religious witnesses to the truth. An overarching issue throughout the essay is the relation between the soul and the body, but I am especially concerned with the relation between self‐sacrifice and self‐love—also known as agape and temporal happiness—when confronted by radical evil. When allowed to correct one another, Weil and Hillesum show us, I believe, how Christian agapism can refuse both hatred and false security, even in an era of terrorism and torture.
