Technological developments have enabled a dramatic expansion and also an evolution of telework, broadly defined as using ICTs to perform work from outside of an employer’s premises. This volume ...offers a new conceptual framework explaining the evolution of telework over four decades. It reviews national experiences from Argentina, Brazil, India, Japan, the United States, and ten EU countries regarding the development of telework, its various forms and effects. It also analyses large-scale surveys and company case studies regarding the incidence of telework and its effects on working time, work-life balance, occupational health and well-being, and individual and organizational performance.

In the rural immigrant community of Istanbul, poor women spend up to fifty hours a week producing goods for export, yet deny that they actually 'work'.
Money Makes Us Relatives asks why Turkish ...society devalues women's work, concealing its existence while creating a vast pool of cheap labor for the world market.
Drawing on two years of ethnographic fieldwork among family producers and pieceworkers, and using fascinating case studies throughout, Jenny B. White shows how women's paid work is viewed in terms of kinship relations of reciprocity and obligation - an extension of domestic work for the family, which is culturally valued but poorly compensated.
Whilst offering the benefits of social identity and long-term security, women's work also reflects global capitalism's ability to capture local cultural norms, and to use these to lower production costs and create exploitative conditions. This fully revised second edition includes a new introduction and conclusion, updated references, comparative material on women's labor elsewhere in the world, and brand new material on Islam, globalization, gender and Turkish family life.
It is an important contribution to debates about women's participation in late global capitalism.
Mason C. M., Carter S. and Tagg S. Invisible businesses: the characteristics of home-based businesses in the United Kingdom, Regional Studies. Home-based businesses comprise a significant proportion ...of the small business sector. But because they are invisible, their economic significance is assumed to be minor. This paper challenges this view. The majority are full-time businesses. One in ten has achieved significant scale. They create jobs for more than just the owner(s). They are concentrated in computer-related, business, and professional service sectors. They also have a distinctive geography. Rural areas and non-metropolitan parts of Southern England have the highest proportion of home-based businesses. Urban-industrial regions have the lowest proportion. This suggests a need to reconsider the role of home-based businesses in local economic development.

Marie Stopes Australia has published a report calling for urgent assistance from the federal, state and territory governments, professional associations and hospitals to support abortion access. ...Covid-19 travel restrictions and isolation requirements mean many doctors are unable to fly interstate. The report notes: 'Doctors should be exempt from mandatory isolation providing they do not have a diagnosis or symptoms of the Covid-19 virus, or a history of high-risk exposure.'
Time-saving goods are defined as market goods that reduce home labor requirements (e.g., restaurants; washing machines). Assuming that time savings are costly, this paper shows that lower income ...individuals can purchase fewer time savings and enjoy less leisure time. Commodity tax rates affecting low-income individuals should depend more on time savings, and less on the classic Corlett and Hague rule. The related literature suggests to impose lower tax rates on goods that require less home labor. This paper shows that goods that offer greater time savings with respect to their more affordable substitutes should also receive favorable tax treatment.
This book charts the history of artisan production and marketing in the Bombay Presidency from 1870 to 1960. While the textile mills of western India's biggest cities have been the subject of many ...rich studies, the role of artisan producers located in the region's small towns have been virtually ignored. Based upon extensive archival research as well as numerous interviews with participants in the handloom and powerloom industries, this book explores the role of weavers, merchants, consumers and laborers in the making of what the author calls 'small-town capitalism'. By focusing on the politics of negotiation and resistance in local workshops, the book challenges conventional narratives of industrial change. The book provides the first in-depth work on the origins of powerloom manufacture in South Asia. It affords unique insights into the social and economic experience of small-town artisans as well as the informal economy of late colonial and early post-independence India.
The United Kingdom (UK) workforce is under unprecedented strain because of the COVID-19 pandemic where many were forced to work from home. While working from home has been a longstanding part of ...flexible working arrangements and a key part of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) push for 'good work', it was never intended to be the only way that many work. Research suggests that there is a difference between male and female experiences of homeworking; existing literature focuses on women's experiences combined with the additional responsibility of parenthood. The lack of research into the male perspective can largely be attributed to the lack of working from home, in this demographic, before the pandemic. The objective of the research was to develop an understanding of the lived experiences of fathers, during these exceptional circumstances. The research aimed to begin an important discussion around how working from home affects fathers, as well as mothers. Semi-structured, video conference facilitated, interviews allowed for in-depth qualitative data collection following an Interpretative Phenomenological Approach (IPA). Data analysis used IPA methods, which, due to the focus on lived experiences, allowed the voice of the participants to remain and for their interpretation of their experience to be the findings of the study. Challenging work-life balance was the central theme developed as well as six superordinate themes. This paper brings together five fathers' experiences of working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. It shows that these men found it hard to find balance in a world of blurred boundaries; this impacted on them physically and mentally and put unique strains on their relationships. This study is a base for further research around how the pandemic has changed the way the economy works and begins to contribute towards the gaps within existing literature.
The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced unique circumstances to women workforce in construction including the need to work from home, changes in job situations and family responsibilities following the ...lockdowns. This exploratory study was conducted around six months into the pandemic in examining the changes of their job situations, and their perceptions of career aspects during the pandemic. The results show that most respondents were employed full-time at the time of survey, and that there were profound changes to their work location and working hours including working from home and worked more hours than usual. Their perceived negative impacts of the pandemic on their capacity to engage in paid work activities due to caring responsibilities, pay or earnings, job security, and career progression and advancement are modest. They were also seemingly confident in staying in their job in the next 12-month. Their perceptions have been found significantly associated with their age, education level, and years of experience in the industry. These findings provide a critical insight on women's job situations in the industry during the pandemic, with implications for human resource practices towards addressing the challenges in retention of women workforce during and post COVID-19 pandemic.
