Over the last 4 years, MEIE has been held in various locations, including Hangzhou (2018 & 2019), an online conference due to COVID-19 (2020), and a hybrid event in Kunming (2021), attracted speakers ...and participants from 12 countries and regions including Australia, Canada, China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, the United States...The Fifth International Conference on Mechanical, Electric and Industrial Engineering (MEIE 2022) was co-organized by China Institute for Quality Research (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) and Ningbo University, which was supposed to be held on May 24-26, 2022 in Sanya, China. Due to the COVID-19 situation and focusing on the health and well-being of the conference participants, the organizing committee decided to hold MEIE 2022 virtually/online on June 24-25, 2022. This event attracted over 80 participants from 6 different countries and regions, and addressed both basic research and the societal/industrial-technological needs within mechanical, electric and industrial engineering.Conference program was divided into 3 sessions: keynote speeches, oral presentations and poster presentations. We are honored to invite 5 experts to give the impressive keynote speeches. And there were 22 oral presenters and 14 poster presenters. During these sessions, presenters shared their latest research findings. Audiences were actively participated in discussion and voting for the best presentations.The proceedings of this conference comprise 98 accepted contributions from 234 submissions, all the papers have been through rigorous peer review to meet the requirements of international publication standards. Many thanks to the authors for their valuable contributions and to the attendees for their active participation. We would like to express our gratitude to the reviewers, who provided constructive criticism and stimulating comments and suggestions to the authors. Metaheuristics are an impressive area of research with extremely important improvements in the solution of intractable optimization problems. Major advances have been made since the first metaheuristic was proposed and numerous new algorithms are still being proposed every day. There is no doubt that the studies in this field will continue to develop in the near future. However, there is an obvious demand to pick out the best performing metaheuristics that are expected to be permanent. In this survey, we distinguish fourteen new and outstanding metaheuristics that have been introduced for the last twenty years (between 2000 and 2020) other than the classical ones such as genetic, particle swarm, and tabu search. The metaheuristics are selected due to their efficient performance, high number of citations, specific evolutionary operators, interesting interaction mechanisms between individuals, parameter tuning/handling concepts, and stagnation prevention methods. After giving absolute foundations of the new generation metaheuristics, recent research trends, hybrid metaheuristics, the lack of theoretical foundations, open problems, advances in parallel metaheuristics and new research opportunities are investigated.

However there is need to introduce new course in Industrial Engineering degree ...curriculum - Creative Industrial Engineering. This course will be designed by Industrial Engineering teachers who have taken extensive and intensive training in Creative Thinking, Design thinking, Lateral thinking etc. They will apply the principles learnt in Creative Thinking, Design Thinking and Lateral Thinking to the problems of Industrial Engineering.It is high time we introduce Creative Industrial Engineering so that Industrial Engineering can apply itself to problems not conventionally considered as part of Industrial Engineering.This will make Industrial Engineering step out of its comfort zone and get into down to earth commonsense problems faced by every one and provide solutions that require lateral thinking, creative thinking, out of box thinking, divergent thinking, right brain thinking . The course content can differ from each institute to another teaching industrial engineering. There has to be a greater discussion amoung academicians of the feasibility of this course, since its need is without doubt unquestionable.
Hazardous waste management is of paramount importance due to the potential threats posed to the environment and local residents. The design of a hazardous waste management system involves several ...important decisions, i.e., the determination of the locations and sizes of treatment, recycling and disposal facilities, and organizing the transportation of hazardous waste among different facilities. In this paper, we proposed a novel stochastic bi-objective mixed integer linear program (MILP) to support these decisions in order to reduce the population exposure to risk while simultaneously maintaining a high cost efficiency of the transportation and treatment of hazardous waste. Moreover, considering the inherent uncertainty within the planning horizon, the cost, demand and affected population are defined as stochastic parameters. A sample average approximation based goal programming (SAA-GP) approach is used to solve the mathematical model. The proposed model and solution method are validated through numerical experiments whose results show that uncertainty may not only affect the objective value but also lead to different strategic decisions in the network design of a hazardous waste management system. In this regard, the strategic decisions obtained by the stochastic model is more robust to the change of external environment. Finally, the model is applied in a real-world case study of healthcare waste management in Wuhan, China, in order to show its applicability.
Purpose
– The mechanical properties and surface finish of functional parts are important consideration in rapid prototyping, and the selection of proper parameters is essential to improve ...manufacturing solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe how parts manufactured by fused deposition modelling (FDM), with different part orientations and raster angles, were examined experimentally and evaluated to achieve the desired properties of the parts while shortening the manufacturing times due to maintenance costs.
Design/methodology/approach
– For this purpose, five different raster angles (0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°) for three part orientations (horizontal, vertical and perpendicular) have been manufactured by the FDM method and tested for surface roughness, tensile strength and flexural strength. Also, behaviour of the mechanical properties was clarified with scanning electron microscopy images of fracture surfaces.
Findings
– The research results suggest that the orientation has a more significant influence than the raster angle on the surface roughness and mechanical behaviour of the resulting fused deposition part. The results indicate that there is close relationship between the surface roughness and the mechanical properties.
Originality/value
– The results of this paper are useful in defining the most appropriate raster angle and part orientation in minimum production cost for FDM components on the basis of their expected in-service loading.

Digital twin is revolutionizing industry. Fired by sensor updates and history data, the sophisticated models can mirror almost every facet of a product, process or service. In the future, everything in the physical world would be replicated in the digital space through digital twin technology. As a cutting-edge technology, digital twin has received a lot of attention. However, digital twin is far from realizing their potential, which is a complex system and long-drawn process. Researchers must model all the different parts of the objects or systems. Varied types of data needed to be collected and merged. Many researchers and participators in engineering are not clear which technologies and tools should be used. 5-dimension digital twin model provides reference guidance for understanding and implementing digital twin. From the perspective of 5-dimension digital twin model, this paper tries to investigate and summarize the frequently-used enabling technologies and tools for digital twin to provide technologies and tools references for the applications of digital twin in the future.
