The aim of this paper is the analysis of potential barriers which would hinder the manufacturing organizations from embracing Industry 4.0. This paper establishes relationships among the barriers using interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and finds out driving and dependence power of barriers, using fuzzy MICMAC (Matriced’ Impacts Croise´s Multiplication Applique´e a´ un Classement) analysis. A group of experts from industry and academia was consulted and ISM methodology was used to develop the contextual relationship among the identified barriers to Industry 4.0 adoption. The results of ISM were used as input to fuzzy MICMAC analysis for determining the driving and dependence power of the Industry 4.0 adoption barriers. The results are helpful in identifying and classifying the significant barriers, revealing the direct and indirect effects of each identified barrier on the Industry 4.0 adoption. The findings will help the practitioners and the policymakers for a detailed understanding of the Industry 4.0 adoption process and the barriers hindering its implementation. They may utilize the framework and the driving-dependence power of the barriers to understanding the inter-relationship between the barriers to building a valid and operative digital manufacturing platform. The study is first of its kind to identify industry 4.0 adoption barriers and develop hierarchical relationships between them using ISM and fuzzy MICMAC methodology in the Indian manufacturing context.

This work presents how recent trends in Industry 4.0 (I4.0) solutions are influencing the development of manufacturing execution systems (MESs) and analyzes what kinds of trends will determine the development of the next generation of these technologies. This systematic and thematic review provides a detailed analysis of I4.0-related requirements in terms of MES functionalities and an overview of MES development methods and standards because these three aspects are essential in developing MESs. The analysis highlights that MESs should interconnect all components of cyber-physical systems in a seamless, secure, and trustworthy manner to enable high-level automated smart solutions and that semantic metadata can provide contextual information to support interoperability and modular development. The observed trends show that formal models and ontologies will play an even more essential role in I4.0 systems as interoperability becomes more of a focus and that the new generation of linkable data sources should be based on semantically enriched information. The presented overview can serve as a guide for engineers interested in the development of MESs as well as for researchers interested in finding worthwhile areas of research.

This paper explores how Industry 4.0 technologies help create a sustainable environment in manufacturing and other industries. Industry 4.0 technologies and the crucial interrelationships through advanced technologies should impact the environment positively. In the age of Industry 4.0, manufacturing is tightly interlinked with information and communication systems, making it more scalable, competitive, and knowledgeable. Industry 4.0 provides a range of principles, instructions, and technology for constructing new and existing factories, enabling consumers to choose different models at production rates with scalable robotics, information, and communications technology. This paper aims to study the significant benefits of Industry 4.0 for sustainable manufacturing and identifies tools and elements of Industry 4.0 for developing environmental sustainability. This literature review-based research is undertaken to identify how Industry 4.0 technologies can help to improve environmental sustainability. It also details the capabilities of Industry 4.0 in dealing with environmental aspects. Twenty major applications of Industry 4.0 to create a sustainable environment are identified and discussed. Thus, it gives a better understanding of the production environment, the supply chains, the delivery chains, and market results. Overall, Industry 4.0 technology seems environmentally sustainable while manufacturing goods with better efficiency and reducing resource consumption.
Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and Circular Economy (CE) are undoubtedly two of the most debated topics of the last decades. Progressively, they gained the interest of policymakers, practitioners and scholars ...all over the world. Even if they have been usually described as two independent research fields, there are some examples presenting overlaps between these topics, represented by hybrid categories like Circular I4.0 and Digital CE. Starting from these two perspectives, an innovative framework both highlighting the links between I4.0 and CE and unveiling future research fields has been developed. Basing on one of the two perspectives, results show as it is possible to enhance a set of different relations. Depending on a dedicated area of either CE or I4.0 it is possible to see the prevalence of some I4.0 technology than others. However, the influence of I4.0 technologies on CE is always verified.

O método de pesquisa foi uma revisão bibliográfica utilizando como fonte de informações as publicações sobre a temática encontradas em Bases de dados eletrônicas. O estudo concluiu que é nítida a necessidade do uso da estratégia da segurança nas organizações no contexto da Indústria 4.0, por motivos como, maior conectividade a redes cibernéticas, maior transação de dados e informações confidenciais.
In the conditions of market volatility and a shortening of the life cycle of products, modern manufacturers are faced with the need to increase costs, accelerate and localize production processes. ...The answer to these challenges is offered by the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0 (I4.0). It consists in increasing the speed of bringing products to market through the transformation of the supply chain into highly adaptive integrated networks. The potential effect of I4.0 implementation on competitiveness (in particular, subsidiaries of foreign companies) and the nature of the modernization of global value chains, of which companies are a part, are considered on four specific examples. It is shown that in the I4.0 era, the competitive advantages of a business may depend both on the transformation of individual industries and on changes in relations between partners. These results are consistent with findings in the literature about the uncertainty and complexity of the digital economy in general, and confirm that there are problems with accurately assessing perceived benefits. I4.0 is based on the struggle for leadership, in which competitiveness is increased primarily by improving product quality, and not by reducing costs. At the same time, I4.0 contributes to the emergence of groups of closely interconnected, integrated with each other companies up to the erasure of clear boundaries between them.
The integration of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies and Lean Manufacturing (LM) principles has emerged as a significant strategy for industries seeking to improve precision, customization, ...competitiveness, and environmental sustainability. However, existing literature lacks a comprehensive model that incorporates these approaches and guides companies towards a green paradigm (GP) transition. This study aims to address the gap in literature by developing a comprehensive model that integrates I4.0 and LM practices and examines how this integration can enhance companies' ability to achieve a green transition. A Systematic Literature Review was conducted to identify 27 critical variables related to I4.0, LM, and GP. The ISM-MICMAC method was applied for analysis. Validation of the model was performed through interview with a sample company. The developed model provides a comprehensive framework for integrating I4.0 and LM practices to facilitate companies' transition towards environmental sustainability. The analysis revealed critical variables and their interactions, highlighting areas of focus for organizations aiming to adopt a green paradigm. The integration of I4.0 and LM practices offers significant potential for enhancing companies' ability to achieve environmental sustainability goals. By identifying critical variables and their relationships, this study provides valuable insights for organizations seeking to navigate the transition towards a green paradigm. This research contributes to the existing literature by presenting a novel model that bridges the gap between I4.0, LM, and environmental sustainability. The findings offer practical guidance for industries aiming to leverage technology and operational strategies to address sustainability challenges.
EFQM is one of the popular business excellence modelling frameworks and is globally accepted in several countries to motivate organisations to formulate strategies for the continual improvement of ...organisational processes leading to excellence. This paper tracks the historical evolution of the EFQM model and dissects the model to its most fundamental elements for analysis and synthesis. The paper aims at understanding the process of evolution of the EFQM model and identifying the major changes in the new EFQM model (2020). In the second stage, an in-depth analysis of the evolution of the EFQM 2020 vis-a-vis the EFQM 2012 model is presented. Lastly, the relationship between EFQM and Industry 4.0 is presented. The research brought to the fore several interesting findings which include the changes in the criteria and sub-criteria of the model over the time. The research points out that the EFQM model is moving towards a generic model with a focus on the futuristic requirements of the organisations rather than merely a business excellence model and/or just a quality award enablement model. The research has been carried out based on the current understanding and available information.
