In environmental education, there have been many studies on learning multimedia, but the media used tends to be limited to the use of conventional media. In this study, we investigate the feasibility ...of Kamiholo, a combination between hologram and Kamishibai for environmental education in elementary school to improve the students' learning outcomes. To avoid bias and increase objectivity, the learning outcomes of Kamiholo utilization will be compared with those of conventional Kamishibai utilization. The experiments in the control and experimental groups both show good results. However, there is a significant difference in the improvement of the student achievement when learning using Kamiholo based on the N-Gain, where the N-Gain value of Kamiholo and Kamishibai are 0.69 and 0.49, respectively. Overall, we have successfully demonstrated the advantages of our new multimedia by combining holograms and Kamishibai for environmental education.
Global environmental damage emphasizes the importance of environmental education at schools. It is a tool for achieving sustainable development. Environmental education (EE) is integrated into ...several core subjects in the Indonesian primary school curriculum as a thematic learning. For the teachers, it is essential to be aware of planning and designing appropriate learning methods based on the physical, emotional, and cognitive stages primary students. Kamishibai seems suitable for EE learning at primary school. It can help students to understand EE content. The aim of this study was to analyze using Kamishibai in thematic learning to increase the students' knowledge of EE. The method used in this study was pre-experiment with the research design of the one-group pretest-posttest design. Nine 5th grade students participated in the study. To determine the students’ knowledge of EE, a test was administered before and after the Kamishibai implementation. As a result of the analysis, it was found that, after the implementation, the students’ knowledge of EE was higher than before implementation. The result also showed the students’ ability in retelling the story at the end of the Kamishibai implementation. These indicated that Kamishibai strengthened students' memory. In conclusion, Kamishibai increased students' knowledge of EE.
•Pre-service teachers’ impressions about the implementation of a Kamishibai in the bilingual classroom were analysed.•Cooperation and respect, as well as art techniques were issues pre-service ...teachers learnt from their partners with the Kamishibai execution.•Pre-service teachers were satisfied with the Kamishibai experience and the teamwork.•The Kamishibai project in the higher-education classroom fosters creativity.•The Kamishibai project in the primary-school classroom promotes reading, fosters creativity, and catches pupils’ attention.
The storytelling technique Kamishibai has shown multiple advantages in educational settings. However, there is a lack of studies that deepen on its implementation in teacher training. A total of 114 pre-service teachers (mean age = 20.76 years), enrolled in the Degree of Primary Education at the University of Málaga, participated in a project where they had to design and perform a paper-based theatre for primary-education pupils as a target audience. A semi-structured online survey was administered to determine pre-service teachers’ satisfaction and perceptions towards their Kamishibai and the work in teams. The results revealed that most of the pre-service teachers were satisfied with the team experience. Besides, some benefits were listed: fostering creativity, at university; catching pupils’ attention, fostering creativity and promoting reading, in primary-school context. The Kamishibai implementation goes beyond promoting reading and other linguistic skills in both mother tongue and foreign language; it may be considered a multidisciplinary educative resource to strengthen further cross-curricular competences.
Abstract
Lean healthcare visual management has been successfully integrated into infection control programs, leading to lower healthcare-associated infection (HAI) rates and greater provider ...compliance with evidence-based prevention practices; however, its implementation during quality improvement (QI) initiatives in limited-resource settings has not yet been well exploited. We aimed to describe a low-cost strategy involving Kamishibai cards to sustain bundles’ adherence to prevent HAIs in a middle-income country. This descriptive case study evaluated the implementation of a lean healthcare visual management tool—Kamishibai board (K-board)—during a nationwide QI collaborative preventing three critical HAIs in 189 adult and pediatric/neonatal intensive care units (ICUs) from September 2021 to January 2023. Considering a limited-resource setting, our team adapted a K-board using simple, cheap, and easy-to-handle materials for routine monitoring of QI procedures, including safety bundles’ compliance. After test prototypes, the final K-board version was implemented. The chart materials and assembly cost BRL 80.00 (USD 15.48). Before launching, expert working group meetings were held to shape the contents, refine technical issues, and prepare the ICU teams for implementation. After starting, plan-do-study-act cycles were conducted according to the Breakthrough Series model. Participating ICU teams, including leaders and front-line health workers, performed bedside audits following a weekly chronogram. Two indicators were calculated: the percentage of ICUs in which K-boards were being implemented and whether bundles’ compliance was addressed in the K-board. Audit data were recorded in ‘SimpleQI’. After 17 months of this initiative, 177 (93.7%) participating ICUs had included this visual management tool in their daily care routines. When more than 94 (>50%) ICUs posted K-board data, the mean compliance for the bundles for each HAI was sustained above 85%. A lean healthcare visual management tool can be adapted to local settings, including healthcare facilities with limited resources. K-board seems to be a feasible method for auditing evidence-based practices in medical care, including safety bundles to simultaneously prevent three types of HAIs.
•Quality improvement project was initiated at a large, academic freestanding children's hospital for inpatients with an indwelling urinary catheter.•An audit tool based on Kamishibai, a Japanese form ...of storytelling, was developed based on CDC CAUTI prevention recommendations.•Hospital-wide urinary catheter K-card rounding facilitated standardized data collection, discussion of reliability, and real-time feedback to nurses.
We instituted Kamishibai (K-card rounding) with the goals of improving indwelling urinary catheter maintenance bundle reliability and decreasing catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) rates.
In a free-standing children's hospital, we undertook a hospital-wide quality improvement project from January 2019 to June 2021 after developing a K-card based on our urinary catheter maintenance bundle. Auditors used K-cards to ask standardized questions during weekly rounds. Bundle reliability and CAUTI rates were analyzed prospectively.
During the study period, 826 K-card audits were performed for 657 unique patients. While overall maintenance bundle reliability remained stable at 84%, there was a statistically significant improvement in reliability to the bundle element “medical discussion of need for the urinary catheter” from 88% to 94% (P = .01). The hospital-wide CAUTI rate significantly decreased (incidence rate ratio, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.15-0.93; P = .04).
Hospital-wide urinary catheter K-card rounding facilitated standardized data collection, discussion of reliability and real-time feedback to nurses. Maintenance bundle reliability remained stable after implementation, accompanied by a significant decrease in the CAUTI rate.
Implementation of hospital-wide urinary catheter K-card rounding was associated with reduction in CAUTI rates. The project demonstrated likelihood of reproducibility with support of a multidisciplinary team.
