•Upstander actions contribute to improving school climate and atmosphere.•Using upstander behaviour models for active intervention is an effective anti-bullying strategy.•Empowering upstanders ...through solidarity, friendship, empathy. promotes successful bullying prevention.•Involving students, teachers, and families combats bullying effectively.
Discrimination and violence against LGBTIQ+ young people have direct and long-term effects on their health and well-being, with high levels of harassment, marginalisation, violence and, consequently, a higher likelihood of school absenteeism and suicidal thoughts. However, there is little systematisation of data showing which strategies are contributing to the prevention of this situation. The study reviews the scientific literature on the main findings. A systematic review was conducted in scientific databases, 41 studies that showed successful actions to reverse the reality of discrimination and violence against the group were selected. From literature review, it is concluded that interventions focusing on upstander training and community-based actions contribute to reducing bullying, gender-based violence and mitigating its adverse effects on LGBTIQ+ youth's well-being.
Was macht jemanden oder etwas queer?
What does gender studies in political science or feminist political science mean? The handbook offers a systematic overview of the dimensions that the consideration of the relationship between ...politics and gender entails for political science, integrating queer and postcolonial perspectives. What consequences does this perspectivisation raise with regard to methods and the history of ideas, what controversies and open questions arise from it? The individual contributions summarise the current state of research, offer a contextualisation in broader political science debates, and provide approaches for deeper engagement through recommended readings. The handbook is thus a perfect starting point for a first compact overview of the subject area of politics and gender.
Was bedeutet politikwissenschaftliche Geschlechterforschung beziehungsweise feministische Politikwissenschaft?
This article discusses some of the normative bases for the recent (2020) Norwegian policy prioritizing LGBTIQ+ refugees in refugee admissions. It argues that, when properly interpreted, this policy ...is compatible with the UNHCR vulnerability selection criteria but is not independently supported by it. Combined with some of the broader moral principles guiding refugee admissions – including both state-based and refugee-based reasons in refugee resettlement – the article provides qualified support for the Norwegian policy of LGBTIQ+ refugee prioritization. Drawing from some of the specifics of LGBTIQ+ refugee resettlement and integration, the article nevertheless points to certain limitations of such a policy in so far as refugees’ own agency is concerned. The article emphasizes the need to listen to refugees’ own voices in the selection and resettlement processes, including cases where the default position of LGBTIQ+ prioritization may be overridden by LGBTIQ+ persons’ own interests in being resettled elsewhere.

•LGB youth report lower sense of belonging in their neighborhoods and Northern Ireland.•No significant increase (or decrease) in belonging for LGB youth over 10 years.•No Protestant/Catholic divide ...in differences in LGB youth's sense of belonging.
In 2023 Northern Ireland celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Belfast Good Friday Agreement (GFA) which is regarded as a milestone of the Northern Ireland peace process. Via the 1998 Northern Ireland Act, the peace process saw equality and anti-discrimination legislation being implemented in Northern Ireland that legislates that public authorities must carry out their duties with due regard to equality of opportunity, including between persons of different sexual orientations and gender identities. Using time series data from 2013 to 2023 taken from the annual Young Life and Times (YLT) survey conducted among a randomized sample of 16-year olds in Northern Ireland (N = 15,162), this article explores the extent to which same-sex attracted young women and men express a sense of belonging to, and influence in, their local neighborhoods and Northern Ireland. We argue that the sense of belonging and influence can be used as suitable policy indicators to assess how same-sex attracted young people fare in Northern Ireland, a society emerging from significant violent conflict. The YLT dataset allows us to track, if any change in attitudes can be detected over the last decade. Our analysis shows that there was an increase in the proportion of young people, especially among young women, expressing same-sex attraction. However, our study also indicates that, regardless of gender, LGB 16-year olds consistently felt a lesser sense of belonging and influence than their non-LGB individuals. We found no LGB-specific differences among respondents with different religious affiliations. LGB respondents disproportionately rejected both Protestant and Catholic faiths and community affiliations, unlike their non-LGB counterparts. Our findings are a strong indicator that religion still plays a major part in the relationship between ethno-national communities in Northern Ireland and that there still is a long way to go until LGB young people feel valued and feel that they belong.
While over the last twenty years, geographers of sexuality have explored the racialization of queer spaces, the experiences of LGBTIQ+ refugees in those spaces are rather absent in these studies. At ...the same time, while in recent years there has been an increasing amount of research on LGBTIQ+ asylum in Europe and beyond, the social experiences of LGBTIQ+ claimants and refugees in their host countries, including queer spaces, have only recently started to be examined. Drawing on research carried out in Germany, Italy and the UK, this article explores LGBTIQ+ refugees' experiences in different spaces such as LGBTIQ+ support groups and night-time leisure spaces, as well as intimate relationships. The article argues that these are "ambivalent" spaces for LGBTIQ+ asylum claimants and refugees and that to fully understand these spatial experiences, we need to look at the inter-dynamic relationship between gender, sexuality, (dis)ability, "race", religion and "refugeeness".
