The digital transformation of libraries is the theme of the paper which is divided into two parts: the hybrid library and the library of the future. Based on an extensive analysis of the literature, ...especially centered on German-language libraries, the digital transformation of libraries is described. The first part analyzes the innovation in the concept of the hybrid library. The second part outlines the future of libraries presented as an evolution of current trends of distributed collections and data curation. In conclusion, the new role of librarians is described as "embedded" in the user research workflow and interconnected in an ongoing dialogue with users.

This article is the second of a pair which consider an early eighteenth-century booklist in the library of the National Trust's Castle Ward. Part 1 identified the titles and when these were present ...in the Castle Ward library, today and previously. It provided an assessment of the titles in relation to patterns of book ownership in English and Irish seventeenth-century and early eighteenth-century contexts. Building upon Part 1's refinement of the information drawn from the titles, library catalogues, surviving books, and known details of individual's reading interests, Part 2 uses further provenance details alongside biographical, archaeological, and architectural information to attribute the booklist to a specific time, place, and family unit. Particular emphasis is placed upon discovering the material environment in which this book collection was housed.
This paper presents an empirical research on the strategic development of a large-scale transdisciplinary area, named Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities or IIHCC, in the ...institutional context of Virginia Tech. In such an innovative space, this study investigated the change dynamics, system thinking, and adaptive design strategies associated with the IIHCC evolution and libraries' innovation. It employed a mixed-methods approach combining semi-structured interviews, ethnographic participant observation, and document analysis. The results present an emerging horizon of intelligent infrastructure and ubiquitous mobility and the evolving knowledge space and shifting data sphere in this cyber-physical-human integrated environment. Within such developments, this study discusses the developing scenarios of "smart" libraries as innovative testbeds for data exploration, community knowledge base, and intelligent information interface. It further projects an intelligent, learning, and adaptive library system, featuring exemplary data science platform and dynamic data management mechanism, smart design and innovation space, as well as collective intelligence and creative partnership. During this extraordinary time of horizon change, this timely work informs academic library transformation and its architectural innovation in the age of "smartness."
