Fettig JS, Prayogo C, Sirappa MP, Sukiman, Burhanuddin, Sultan, Kurniawan S. 2023. Ethnobotany of the local banana (Musa spp.) variety Loka Pere in West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: ...6472-6483. Compared to modern crop varieties, many farmers’ varieties are nutrient dense, stress tolerant, disease resistant and suited to local conditions. It is thought that increased utilization of farmers’ varieties in agrifood systems can improve rural livelihoods. One underutilized farmers’ variety is Loka Pere, a local banana (Musa spp.) in Majene District, West Sulawesi. The purpose of this research was to study ethnobotany of Loka Pere to develop its knowledge base regarding cultural importance, management and local perception of its potential, spatial dynamics and production constraints. Ethnobotany data was collected in the villages Adolang, Adolang Dhua, and Betteng through participatory observation, open-ended conversations, semi-structured interviews, and surveys. Descriptive, qualitative data was recorded alongside total use value and relative frequency of citation for its characteristic traits, ideal growth conditions, and limitations to production. Surveys included ranking and scaled perception questions. Loka Pere is an endemic farmers’ variety originating from the study area and may be locally adapted. It has a strong link to the local community’s identity - often called Manurung Adolang, or the “icon of Adolang” - and is the preferred banana of locals. It has unique phenotypic characteristics and uses, including use as a traditional fertility medicine. After approaching disappearance, local conservation projects and growing desire to utilize the resource led to its reintroduction to production systems. Respondents agreed they would benefit from its increased utilization, including development of processed products. Farmers described ideal conditions and processes for Loka Pere cultivation. It is often grown intercropped or in agroforestry systems. Limitations to production include wild boar, climate, and value chain. Loka Pere appears to be a farmers’ variety with high potential for regional development. Strengthening traditional knowledge related to its cultivation and use can aid in its reintegration into agrifood systems.
Fitriyani N, Purba LHPS. 2023. Short Communication: Daily activities of Javan langurs (Trachypithecus auratus) in Gembira Loka Zoo, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 5278-5282. The Javan ...langur (Trachypithecus auratus) is one of the endemic primates of Java, Bali, and Lombok. The status of this species is vulnerable in their wild population; thus, the conservation effort is important to keep their existence. One of the conservation efforts is ex-situ conservation. Since this conservation is out of the animal's natural habitat, we must care about all aspects of animal welfare, including the physical and mental state, which can be observed from its behavior. This study aimed to analyze the daily activities of Javan langur living in an ex-situ conservation area named Gembira Loka Zoo. We observed and recorded the daily activity of seven individuals of Javan langur for about 250 hours, including holiday and non-holiday periods. This observation during holiday and non-holiday periods is intended to see whether there are differences in the behavior of Javan langur. The differences in number of visitors during the holiday period can reach thousands, whereas during the non-holiday period, there are only tens up to hundreds of loyal visitors per day. The result showed that the individuals spent most of their time on resting behavior (62.28% on holiday and 61.83% on non-holiday), followed by feeding (15.82% on holiday and 20.70% on non-holiday) and moving (12.01% on holiday and 12.64% on non-holiday). We analyzed the difference in their daily activities between holiday and non-holiday periods to observe the frequency of activity among those types of days. The Javan langurs showed a significant difference between those days only in social behavior (Mann-Whitney, p = 0.03). This study provides new behavioral data about the population of captive Javan langurs in Gembira Loka Zoo, which can be used as basic data for the conservation management of Javan langurs in captivity.
Abstract
The present research aimed to investigate Loka Pere banana (Musa sp.), an endemic species with distinct characteristics, but currently underrepresented in scientific literature. Our primary ...goal was to isolate the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS2) region from the leaf and corm samples of this unique banana variant. As a methodological approach, we utilized a modified CTAB protocol to extract DNA and amplified the ITS2 region via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using ITS-S2F and ITS-S3R primers, achieving an amplicon size approximately 500 bp long. The results showed successful isolation of the ITS2 sequences from both leaf and corm samples of Loka Pere Banana. This finding signifies the potential of the ITS2 region of the Loka Pere banana as a novel and reliable DNA barcode marker. Future research can leverage this data for more accurate molecular identification and phylogenetic analyses, enhancing our understanding of the genetic diversity among the Musa genus.

Even though experiencing much discrimination in this country, the existence of local religion such as mysticism stream steadily grows and even still attracts many followers. Truth claim that ...is frequently voiced by formal religions such as Islam, Catholic, Christian, Buddha, Hindu and Confucius is not frightening to adherents of local religion, even less converting to another belief. Interestingly, the adherents’ belief of formal religion whether aware or not often has mixed with the belief of local religion
Place branding is an approach to stimulating territorial development. From the theoretical point of view, place branding in rural areas should be an inclusive and participatory process. Applications ...and outcomes of the process have been insufficiently investigated so far in rural areas. The oldest place brand in Slovenia, “Babica in Dedek”, is analyzed to present its socioeconomic circumstances, impacts, and challenges from the perspective of local producers. Three qualitative methods are thus applied: analysis of documents, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group. This case study has revealed factors that contribute to new marketing opportunities, product packaging, holding seminars, and advertising local products in the area. On the other hand, the empirical findings are only partly aligned with the theoretical implications: the impacts of place branding are “sectorally limited” instead of being inclusive and participative.
Škofja Loka is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Slovenia. In 1987 it was declared a cultural monument. In this article I will discuss the reasons why the town does not live in the tourist ...sense in spite of a huge heritage potential. The local population often sees living in the old part of the town as an obstacle, tourists do not stay in the town for more than two hours, important events at- tract a large number of people only a few times per year which is not enough for the old part of the town to live on tourism, and consequently it is slowly dying. Why is Škofja Loka a town which is not able to apply its own cultural heritage and create a very interesting and attractive tourist story? Škofja Loka does have stories which represent timelessness and the ability to connect different time periods. I linked its potential different brand name and I will show how the heritage can be a potential and basis for the development of town tourism, not linked only to a few one-off events.
Education is a tool to raise the degree and quality of the nation. Good management is needed to keep educational process continuing. Conventional management is going to silence the world of ...education in responding to the challenges of time and modernity. In the meantime, Lampung community still has a strongly local culture and it has great potential to become a major principle for the implementation of an ideal education. Management education based on local culture is, by itself, a manifestation of democratic education and community based (community-based education). By using methods of descriptive and phenomenological approach, it is understood that the culture of Lampung-based management of education is a necessity for management reform in education, particularly among the Lampongs. In addition, it also has a normative as well as the philosophical foundation rooted in the values of local traditions, as well as the demands of an increasingly democratic era and in the country with a democratic system.
