Best known for his works on the mystical practice of meditative recollection, Franciscan friar Francisco de Osuna published his candid manual for lay life, Norte de los estados (North Star) in 1531 ...before leaving Spain to reside in Antwerp. True to its title, the book was intended as a North Star that would dependably guide readers through the stages of youth, marriage, and widowhood. Although the historical literature on these themes is dominated by the works of his humanist contemporaries, Erasmus of Rotterdam and Juan Luis Vives, Osuna's close attention to women's experiences and his critical awareness of social class are distinctive. This first modern edition in Spanish restores Osuna's reformist voice and expansive vision to the animated conversations on marriage and family in which he engaged. His detailed attention to practical questions and his intense spiritualization of spousal love make it an invaluable resource for understanding conjugal relationships in the popular imagination of the early modern world.
The attitudes of single and married individuals towards marriage may differ. In this research, the marriage attitudes of married and single individuals were examined in terms of various variables. ...For this purpose, the marriage attitudes of married and single individuals were examined in terms of gender, marital status, employment status, age, economic level and education level variables. In the research, descriptive survey design, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The population of this research consists of married and single individuals. The sample group of the research was selected using the random sampling method to reflect the universe. Considering the possible data loss, a total of 383 individuals consisting of 228 female and 155 male participants were selected as the sample group. The "Personal Information Form" and the "Marital Attitudes Scale" were administered to the individuals who participated in the study. Independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used to analyse the data obtained from the research. If there was a difference in the results of the analyses, post hoc Tukey and LSD tests were used to see which group the difference came from. According to the results of the analyses, it was found that the variables of marital status, parental marital status, age, socio-economic level and educational level created a statistically significant difference between married and single individuals. In the analyses carried out on the variables of gender and employment status, the difference was not significant. Married persons are more likely to be married than single persons.
The adaptation of an expatriate is a function of several factors and family issues have been identified as potential influencers in the process. However, little is known about the effect of the ...existing role of the spouse in the adaptation of the expatriate. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the adjustment of expatriates and their spouses with the performance of the expatriate. It is a quantitative study with 217 couples in which one member of the couple occupied the expatriate position. The results showed no significant relationship between the adjustment of the spouse and the performance of the expatriate, but revealed that the adaptation of expatriate moderates the relationship between these variables. These results suggest that the adaptation of the spouse can have an indirect relationship on expatriate performance, via the expatriate's adaptation. These findings support the idea that companies should invest in organizational support to facilitate a better fit of the expatriate and his spouse to the host country culture and to promote a higher individual performance. Entretanto, pouco se sabe sobre o efeito existente do papel do conjuge na adaptacao do expatriado. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho e avaliar a relacao entre a adaptacao de expatriados e seus conjuges com o desempenho do expatriado. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, realizado com 217 casais com um dos conjuges tendo ocupado a posicao de expatriado. Os resultados nao mostraram uma relacao significante entre a adaptacao do conjuge e o desempenho do expatriado, mas revelaram que a adaptacao do expatriado modera a relacao entre essas variaveis. Esses resultados sugerem que a adaptacao do conjuge pode exercer uma influencia indireta no desempenho do expatriado, via sua adaptacao. Esses achados suportam a ideia de que deve-se investir em suporte organizacional para facilitar um melhor ajuste do expatriado e seu conjuge a cultura do pais de destino e promover um desempenho individual superior. In this study, the relationship between attachment avoidance and marital satisfaction of Chinese married people as well as the multiple mediating role of spousal support and coping tendency were ...explored. A model was developed using data of a sample of 510 Chinese married people. Four scales (the Experience of Close Relationships Scale, the Support Scale in Intimate Relationships, the Simple Coping Style Scale, and the Olson Marital Quality Questionnaire) were used to assess attachment avoidance, spousal support, coping tendency, and marital satisfaction, respectively. The results of correlation analysis showed that attachment avoidance was significantly negatively correlated with spousal support, coping tendency, and marital satisfaction. Spousal support was significantly positively correlated with both coping tendency and marital satisfaction. Coping tendency was significantly positively correlated with marital satisfaction. The mediation model indicated significant mediating effects of spousal support and coping tendency between attachment avoidance and marital satisfaction, respectively, where the mediating path of spousal support exerted the largest effect. The multiple mediating effect of attachment avoidance → spousal support → coping tendency → marital satisfaction was also significant. Chinese married people with high levels of attachment avoidance might perceive lower levels of spousal support and are therefore more inclined to employ negative coping when handling conflicts, which lowers marital satisfaction.
In this lively and engaging work, Carolyn Lewis explores how medical practitioners, especially family physicians, situated themselves as the guardians of Americans' sexual well-being during the early ...years of the Cold War. She argues that many doctors viewed their patients' sexual habits as more than an issue of personal health. They believed that a satisfying sexual relationship between heterosexual couples with very specific attributes and boundaries was the foundation of a successful marriage, a fundamental source of happiness in the American family, and a crucial building block of a secure nation.Drawing on hundreds of articles and editorials in medical journals as well as other popular and professional literature, Lewis traces how medical professionals defined and reinforced heterosexuality in the mid-twentieth century, giving certain heterosexual desires and acts a veritable stamp of approval while labeling others as unhealthy or deviant. Lewis links their prescriptive treatment to Cold War anxieties about sexual norms, gender roles, and national security. Doctors of the time, Lewis argues, believed that "unhealthy" sexual acts, from same-sex desires to female-dominant acts, could cause personal and marital disaster; in short, says Lewis, they were "un-American."
Abstract
This study examines a possible connection between shifting gender and family norms and declining internal migration. Using data from the 1989–1998 and 2009–2018 Annual Social and Economic ...Supplements of the Current Population Survey, we examine whether co-breadwinner married couples have become less likely to migrate within the US relative to couples with a sole or primary breadwinner. We find a general U-shaped association between wives’ share of a married couple’s income and that couple’s likelihood of moving across state or county lines; in both time periods, couples were least likely to move when their incomes were roughly equal. However, we find this U-shaped pattern grew more pronounced in the 2010s compared with the 1990s: Over time, co-breadwinner couples became increasingly less likely to move relative to other married couples. Given that family migration decision-making has historically been gendered, this suggests dual-career married couples have become less willing to uproot women’s careers for the benefit of men’s. We argue the most likely reason for this change in behavior is a shift in norms governing the gender division of labor—in particular, a shift away from the cultural model of the male breadwinner. Based on a decomposition analysis, we estimate this change explains about one-third of the overall decline in migration among married couples ages 25–39 between the 1990s and 2010s.
In the present study Romantic Jealousy Scale for married men and women was developed and validated. The items were empirically generated through interviewing seven participants that is married men ...and women. The scale was administered on a sample (N = 318) of married men and married women between the age range of 21 to 63 years to establish psychometric properties. Reliability of the scale was adequate, and the results of scale factor analysis showed significant KMO value and Bartlett's test of sphericity significant. Scree plot revealed two factors as these two were seen above the elbow of the plot. To confirm the number of factors, factor analysis was conducted that revealed two factors through Principal Component Analysis, Direct Oblimin Rotation and were labeled as Sexual Jealousy and Emotional Jealousy. The inter-item correlation for subscales revealed that the two factors were significantly correlated with the total score of Romantic Jealousy Scale and 15 items out of original 18 items were retained that contributed significantly theoretically as well as empirically. The development and psychometric properties of the Romantic Jealousy Scale were established and discussed keeping in view the contextual and cultural variation. Keywords.
