A notable feature of contemporary Hwanghae-do (now a region in North Korea) shamanism in Incheon, west of Seoul, is a body of material symbols of American power that are familiar to Koreans—such as ...the Stars and Stripes or the portrait of General Douglas MacArthur. Focusing on the small American flag that Kim Kum-hwa, a renowned Hwanghae-origin shaman, brought home from her tour of the United States in 1982 during which she performed kut, Korea’s shamanic rite, at the Knoxville World Fair and the Smithsonian Museum, this article investigates how this object came to join Kim’s spirit shrine as an auspicious artifact and what it says about her eminent yet turbulent career experience. It asks what sort of power the American flag displays and how this power is different from what we habitually understand as “American power.”
Previous studies of postage stamps noted their importance in promoting national identity and the objectives of the state. Neglected in this literature by geographers and others is a discussion of ...stamp themes and issues during political and economic transitions. A content analysis of issues during the Soviet Union's last three years and Russia's first three years revealed some significant changes. The Soviet Union issued many stamps and sets on a wide variety of topics, including nature, folk items and legends, international ties, and ideology. Russia issued fewer stamps: Nature was important, but religion and issues that promoted Russia's heritage replaced ideology and international themes. Early Russian stamps evoked an "inward" worldview that promoted a nascent nationalism. In its final years the Soviet Union noted evidence of these changes in priorities and themes with issues that depicted Soviet environmental disasters or honored the individuals killed in the failed Russian coup attempt in August 1991.
Pillars and roof ornaments in the form of dragon heads abounded, and pairs of fanciful faces, depicting medieval Norwegian kings and queens, looked down at viewers from elevated positions on the ...pillars and upper supports of the Building's interior (fig. 3). Because the officials of the fair had allocated such a small area to the Norway display, the Building was not designed to hold all the exhibits and goods the Norwegians planned to present (Bigler and Mudrey 1992, 22). ...with help of Arne Asphjell, an Orkdal resident who had studied at the University of Wisconsin and who acted as a go-between, and with the initial support of some generous local citizens of the Orkdal municipality, the sale went through, and the Building was disassembled for a fourth time and transported back across the ocean to Norway, to be celebrated as an exciting new attraction for Orkdal and Orkanger. First and foremost among the new dimensions of the Building that began to arise in its Facebook coverage was the Building's connection with the local woodcarving tradition, particularly as exemplified in the Building's sculptures of kings, queens, and dragons, created by Peder Kvaale in 1893. ...the volunteers' view prevailed, and the site near the hotel was chosen, helping underscore the association of the Building with the Thams family and the municipality as a whole.
The national emblem is the symbol of high respect for the nation, this symbol indicates the nation's power, wealth, pride, and people. The national emblem has a special respect and place in both the ...nation's history and even the nation's present. These national emblems represent the identity of a nation. These national emblems are mainly used on occasions of national importance. So, this was important to preserve these emblems' importance in this AI-growing modern era. So hybrid model is developed over 8 national emblems using CNN and SVM deep learning approaches. These 8 national emblems represent the eight countries, India, the UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, the USA, and the Netherlands. A dataset of 9950 images was used to train this hybrid model. 96.92% is the best accuracy obtained for this multiclassification of national emblems. 90.15% is the best F1 score recorded. And macro average is 86.0225% for this classification. In the future, more than 8 national emblems can be considered for multiclassification. And other hybrid models can be developed for obtaining better accuracy.
U.S. armed forces invaded Iraq in March 2003, claiming that the country had weapons of mass destruction (wmd) which it intended to use against the United States Although evidence of the existence of ...these wmd was limited, President George W. Bush's administration faced little opposition in taking the United States to war. Using the concepts of "iconography" and "banal nationalism," I argue that the events of 9/11 and the subsequent outpouring of nationalism dampened opposition to the invasion of Iraq. The increased display of the American flag in the aftermath of 9/11 was emblematic of this increase in nationalism and generated additional support for the Bush administration's decision to go to war. This nationalism further created a form of "collective amnesia" that limited the citizenry's receptivity to information contradicting the administration's narrative, which continues to linger.
Products from postage stamps to motion pictures motivate worldwide networks of similarly minded people, generate massive income, and support subcultures: those of collectors, scholars, producers, and ...consumers. ... what the contributors write about flags, postage stamps, license plates, tourism brochures, comic books, movies, and urban graffiti can easily be applied to, say, currency and naming (Raento and others 2004; Berg and Vuolteenaho 2009; Jones and Merriman 2009; Hymans 2010; Rose-Redwood, Alderman, and Azaryahu 2010).
