How music embodies and contributes to historical and
contemporary nationalism
What does music in Portugal and Spain reveal about the
relationship between national and regional identity building? How
...do various actors use music to advance nationalism? How have state
and international heritage regimes contributed to nationalist and
regionalist projects? In this collection, contributors explore
these and other essential questions from a range of
interdisciplinary vantage points. The essays pay particular
attention to the role played by the state in deciding what music
represents Portuguese or Spanish identity. Case studies examine
many aspects of the issue, including local recording networks,
so-called national style in popular music, and music's role in both
political protest and heritage regimes. Topics include the ways the
Salazar and Franco regimes adapted music to align with their
ideological agendas; the twenty-first-century impact of UNESCO's
Intangible Cultural Heritage program on some of Portugal and
Spain's expressive practices; and the tensions that arise between
institutions and community in creating and recreating meanings and
identity around music.

Who are "the folk" in folk music? This book traces the musical
culture of these elusive figures in Britain and the US during a
crucial period of industrialization from 1870 to 1930, and beyond
to the ...contemporary alt-right. Drawing on a broad,
interdisciplinary range of scholarship, The Folk examines
the political dimensions of a recurrent longing for folk culture
and how it was called upon for radical and reactionary ends at the
apex of empire. It follows an insistent set of disputes surrounding
the practice of collecting, ideas of racial belonging, nationality,
the poetics of nostalgia, and the pre-history of European fascism.
Deeply researched and beautifully written, Ross Cole provides us
with a biography of a people who exist only as a symptom of the
modern imagination, and the archaeology of a landscape directing
flows of global populism to this day.
The plebiscite is well understood by political actors as a means of breaking parliamentary deadlocks or as a tool for government to establish a mandate. While it is recognised that a plebiscite may ...be lawfully procured by different means (by legislation or under the executive power), the law in Australia has so far struggled to characterise the substance of these activities. What is a vote may be a poll, a plebiscite or the gathering of statistics. Few detailed treatments of the topic exist. After identifying the different competences which support these activities, and after drawing together current understandings, this article offers a survey of the constitutional work performed by plebiscites in Australia and seeks to evaluate their place, as a species of political participation, within the normative system of representative government described by the Constitution.
Bob Dylan's iconic 1962 song "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" stands at
the crossroads of musical and literary traditions. A visionary
warning of impending apocalypse, it sets symbolist imagery within a
...structure that recalls a centuries-old form. Written at the height
of the 1960s folk music revival amid the ferment of political
activism, the song strongly resembles-and at the same time
reimagines-a traditional European ballad sung from Scotland to
Italy, known in the English-speaking world as "Lord Randal."
Alessandro Portelli explores the power and resonance of "A Hard
Rain's A-Gonna Fall," considering the meanings of history and
memory in folk cultures and in Dylan's work. He examines how the
ballad tradition to which "Lord Randal" belongs shaped Dylan's song
and how Dylan drew on oral culture to depict the fears and crises
of his own era. Portelli recasts the song as an encounter between
Dylan's despairing vision, which questions the meaning and
direction of history, and the message of resilience and hope for
survival despite history's nightmares found in oral traditions. A
wide-ranging work of oral history, Hard Rain weaves
together interviews from places as varied as Italy, England, and
India with Portelli's autobiographical reflections and critical
analysis, speaking to the enduring appeal of Dylan's music. By
exploring the motley traditions that shaped Dylan's work, this book
casts the distinctiveness and depth of his songwriting in a new
light.
The relationship between language and music has much in common - rhythm, structure, sound, metaphor. Exploring the phenomena of song and performance, this book presents a sociolinguistic model for ...analysing them. Based on ethnomusicologist John Blacking's contention that any song performed communally is a 'folk song' regardless of its generic origins, it argues that folk song to a far greater extent than other song genres displays 'communal' or 'inclusive' types of performance. The defining feature of folk song as a multi-modal instantiation of music and language is its participatory nature, making it ideal for sociolinguistic analysis. In this sense, a folk song is the product of specific types of developing social interaction whose major purpose is the construction of a temporally and locally based community. Through repeated instantiations, this can lead to disparate communities of practice, which, over time, develop sociocultural registers and a communal stance towards aspects of meaningful events in everyday lives that become typical of a discourse community.
The subject of the analysis is a lesser-known study by Rudo Brtáň (1907 – 1998) about Slovak classicist Juraj Rohoň (1773 – 1831), originally from the Turiec region, who spent most of his life in Low ...Land. The study titled Juraj Rohoň was published by R. Brtáň in a literature and culture magazine of Yugoslavian Slovaks called Nový život/New Life in 1965, which is produced in Serbia, this is why it remained less accessible and known to a significant part of Slovak literary science. Brtáň´s paper has fundamental importance for understanding of J. Rohoň´s life and work, his findings are confronted with several recent investigations (S. Čelovský, E. Brtáňová, M. Babiak) in the study. A significant part of Brtáň´s research is focused on genealogy, where besides Rohoň´s immediate relatives he tracked other notable figures of this national revivalist, intelectual and artistic family. He also describes in more detail Rohoň´s main literary works: so-called apologias Chvála Slováků/Apotheosis of Slovaks and Palma/A Palm Tree, a collection of neoclassical poems Kratochvílne zpěvy pro mládež rolníckou/Leisure Time Songs for the Farming Youth, and also a collection of Slovak folk songs Starodávne zpěvy lidu slovenského v Uhrách/Ancient Songs of Slovak Folk in Hungary, which became a part of Kollár´s Národnie spievanky/National Songs. The works which defended Slovaks and Slavs earned Rohoň a place in Ján Kollár´s poem Slávy dcera/The Daughter of Sláva – Kollár placed him alongside other authors who had published apologias in the Slavic heaven.
