A prominent authority on China's Belt and Road Initiative
reveals the global risks lurking within Beijing's project of the
century China's Belt and Road Initiative is the world's
most ambitious and ...misunderstood geoeconomic vision. To carry out
President Xi Jinping's flagship foreign-policy effort, China
promises to spend over one trillion dollars for new ports,
railways, fiber-optic cables, power plants, and other connections.
The plan touches more than one hundred and thirty countries and has
expanded into the Arctic, cyberspace, and even outer space. Beijing
says that it is promoting global development, but Washington warns
that it is charting a path to global dominance. Taking readers on a
journey to China's projects in Asia, Europe, and Africa, Jonathan
E. Hillman reveals how this grand vision is unfolding. As China
pushes beyond its borders and deep into dangerous territory, it is
repeating the mistakes of the great powers that came before it,
Hillman argues. If China succeeds, it will remake the world and
place itself at the center of everything. But Xi may be
overreaching: all roads do not yet lead to Beijing.
Cilj je ovog istraživanja ispitati doprinos varijabli obiteljskog i varijabli vršnjačkog konteksta u objašnjenju samopoštovanja tijekom rane, srednje i kasne adolescencije.

This book challenges the common European notions about African migration to Europe and offers a holistic understanding of the current situation in Africa. It advocates a need to rethink Africa-Europe ...relations and view migration and borders as a resource rather than as sources of a crisis.
Migrant movement from Africa is often misunderstood and misrepresented as invasion caused by displacement due to poverty, violent conflict, and environmental stress. To control this movement and preserve national identities, the EU and its various member states resort to closing borders as a way of reinforcing their migration policies. This book aims to dismantle this stereotypical view of migration from Africa by sharing cutting-edge research from the leading scholars in Africa and Europe. It refutes the flawed narratives that position Africa as a threat to European societies, their economies, and security, and encourages a nuanced understanding of the root causes as well as the socioeconomic factors that guide the migrants’ decision-making. With chapters written in a concise style, this book brings together the migration and border studies in an innovative way to delve into the broader societal impacts of both. It also serves to de-silence the African voices in order to offer fresh insights on African migration – a discourse dominated hitherto by the European perspective.
This book constitutes a valuable resource for research scholars and students of Border Studies, Migration Studies, Conflict and Security Studies, and Development Studies seeking specialisation in these areas. Written in an accessible style, it will also appeal to a more general public interested in gaining a fuller perspective on the African reality.
This article focuses on young people in family farms (Croatian OPGs) in Vidovec, more specifically on young people’s actions (using Bourdieu’s habitus), young people’s roles and on family and work ...relations, all of which have an impact on young people. The aim of this qualitative research is to identify the different processes that young people go through in the OPGs, which is motivated by the lack of research on this topic in Croatia. The data was collected through six semi-structured interviews. The habitus of young people in OPGs is formed in childhood and is represented by the interaction of family, social and agricultural situations. Family, work and gender roles in the OPG are recognized, especially the role of successor and helper. Young people are mainly driven by the obligation to help their parents in the OPG, for family and economic reasons. Life choices in the OPG are rarely binary and dichotomous, which is reflected in the activities of the young people and in the relations between the young people and their parents. Life in the OPG entails an intertwining of family and work relations, based on which hierarchies and different power relations can be recognized. The current conditions set by local self-government, the circumstances of Croatian agriculture and agricultural incentives lead young people to consider leaving agriculture in the future, although these reasons are not decisive. This decision is primarily influenced by family and work relations in the OPG and is linked to the problems of leaving the farmer’s habitus.
This book offers new insight into the end of the British Empire in the Middle East. It takes a fresh look at the relationship between Britain and the Gulf rulers at the height of the British Empire, ...and how its effects are still felt internationally today. Over the last four decades, the Persian Gulf region has gone through oil shocks, wars and political changes, and yet the basic entities of the southern Gulf states have remained largely in place. How did this resilient system come about for such seemingly contested societies? Drawing on extensive multi-archival research in the British, American and Gulf archives, this book illuminates a series of negotiations between British diplomats and the Gulf rulers that inadvertently led Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE to take their current shapes. The story addresses the crucial question of self-determination versus 'better together', a dilemma pertinent to anyone interested in the transformation of the modern world.
This book analyses whether the EU’s drift towards European strategic autonomy presents a challenge or a window of opportunity for its small member states to advance their security interests. The ...volume presents small states’ perceptions of European strategic autonomy, highlighting their expectations and concerns. The chapters focus on the depth and breadth of European strategic autonomy, national security considerations, assessment of the impact on transatlantic relations, the expected outputs, and its potential impact on the EU’s institutional structure. It also shows how systemic circumstances and the interests of powerful states, either belonging to the EU (France, Germany, and Poland) or having a significant say in European security architecture (the US), establish opportunities and constraints for the small states to shape European strategic autonomy. In particular, the study focuses on the diverging interests of the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, and the Netherlands. It demonstrates that, in most cases, European strategic autonomy is perceived not as an alternative to NATO but as a supplementary element that could facilitate the development of national military capabilities, indigenous defence industries and resilience to non-military threats. Ultimately, the book suggests that national approaches towards European strategic autonomy mainly stem from pragmatic national security and foreign policy considerations, while largely ignoring grand strategic ideas. This book will be of much interest to students of European politics, security studies, and international relations.
