ON SEVERAL HYDRONYMS OF MARIJAMPOLĖ COUNTY UPDATING CURRENT HYDRONYMY DATA
Summary
Unique resources of toponyms accumulated during the interwar and afterwar period in Lithuania are stored at the ...Department of Onomastics in the Institute of the Lithuanian Language. Data from questionnaires of the interwar period, i.e. toponyms accumulated by former counties, are among the most scientifically valuable. The author of this article selected the place names of Marijampolė County recorded in the language spoken in thirteen rural districts. Authentic and previously unexamined material was divided according to the type of objects named: names of water bodies (hydronyms), names of inhabited locations and names of uninhabited locations (names of various other objects located on the surface of the earth). In the analysis and discussion of ways of place name formation and evaluation of the origin of toponyms within the indicated groups, the focus was on the authenticity of toponyms, especially hydronyms, recorded in the interwar period.
To date there are two official published hydronym sources: Lietuvos TSR upių ir ežerų vardynas (Index of Names of Lakes and Rivers of the Lithuanian SSR) (editor E. Grinaveckienė, Vilnius: Valstybinė politinės ir mokslinės literatūros leidykla, 1963) and Lietuvių hidronimų etimologinis žodynas (Etymological Dictionary of Lithuanian Hydronyms) by A. Vanagas (Vilnius: Mokslas, 1981). While using both editions for practical purposes, some inconsistencies, differences in form, accentuation, localization and in other aspects were detected. Data from interwar questionnaires of Marijampolė County helped to refine the current data as well as supplement the index of Lithuanian rivers and lakes with new hydronyms. Such studies do not only reveal peculiarities of different Lithuanian place names, but also help to find answers to a number of questions related to the evolution of gender and sources of origin of toponyms.
COMMENTS ON THE EVOLUTION OF LITHUANIAN COMPOUND PROPER NAMES WITH vaiš- AS THE FIRST COMPONENTSummaryThis article investigates changes that took place while writing down the first component vaiš- ...of compound proper names in various types of documents by people with a varying knowledge of Lithuanian. The following variants of vaiš- are attested, due to phonetic context and incorrect adaptation in a foreign writing system: vais-, vaiz-, vaiž-, vois-, voiš-, voiz-, voiž-, veiš- and veis-. Stems of this type were further abbreviated, giving rise to the component vai- (voi-). This process took place in all Lithuanian-speaking areas, but was especially frequent in the Žemaitian region. It is particularly common among compound proper names with the second component °nor-, rarer with °but-, °vyd-, °vil-. The stem vai- is thus a variant of vaiš- and is not related to Lith. vajóti, vajỹs, as it is often maintained in onomastic literature. Compound proper names with vos- as their first component are probably also should be linked to compound words with vaiš- as their first component. In the process of writing proper names that contain vaiš- in non-Lithuanian documents, ai was monophthongized and written instead with or . The process of monophthongization was stimulated by the dialect of the Žemaitian region as well.
OBSERVATIONS ON ŽEMAITIAN SHORTENED SURNAMES DERIVED FROM THE PROPER NAME Gedrìmas SummaryBeside the Lithuanian proper name Gedrìmas and its shortened derivatives in Gedr- we also ...frequently find Giedrìmas, Giedr-. The variant Giedr- was probably due to the influence from documents written in Polish, where Gedr- was regularly written Giedr-. The variant Gedr- is particularly well attested in Žemaitian area (where Giedr- in any case also occurs) where it was not changed to Giedr- because there was no possible secondary association with the adjective gydras, the form used in most of Žemaitian area instead of (Aukštaitian) giẽdras.
ACCENTUATION OF LITHUANIAN COMPOUND MALE NAMES: THE ACUTE OF THE FIRST COMPONENT SummaryIn this paper, the main etymologies of the first components of Lithuanian compound male names are reviewed and ...the accentuation of these compounds is compared with the accentual properties of their base words, the modern surnames, and respective place names. The acute of the first stressed component of Lithuanian compound male names is most often inherited from the corresponding common nouns, verbs, prepositions, etc. The acute diphthongs of the types aR, eR, iR, and uR usually correspond to the heterosyllabic sounds in stressed roots of non-proper words. The acute of the first component is almost always confirmed by the accentuation of compound surnames or the place names of anthroponomical origin.
INTERACTION OF LITHUANIAN PERSONAL NAMESSummaryThe article examines the three layers of the origin of Lithuanian personal names, i. e. the layer of the old national onomastics, the layer of personal ...names brought by Christianity and the layer of nicknames, and the interplay between these layers. The intrusion of Christian names into the old system of two-stem personal names and the impact of the latter on Christian names is highlighted, as well as the interaction between the Christian onomastics and that of the origin of nickname. Hybrid forms are also discussed.
